PARIS -- Chelsea captain John Terry is confident that his stay at Stamford Bridge will be extended beyond the summer.

Terry, who led a rearguard effort in the Premier League leaders' 1-1 Champions League last-16 first-leg draw at Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, has been a Chelsea player since he was 14 and will be out of contract at the end of the season.

"The club know my position, I know theirs and it will hopefully get done," the 34-year-old told reporters in Paris. "No talks have happened yet but we both respect the position."

Terry said he was hopeful his deal will be sorted out now that Chelsea have tied up the long-term future of Eden Hazard, who was signed up until 2020 last week.

"There are a lot more important players than me -- Hazard's one that's just been done, and that's the most important thing for the club," Terry said. "Without them even telling me that, I know that's the priority for them and hopefully they'll be knocking on the door soon."

Having racked up his 500th appearance captaining Chelsea back in October against Crystal Palace, Terry -- who penned a one-year deal in May 2014 after a long-term contract expired -- is currently enjoying a renaissance under Jose Mourinho.

Chelsea's club policy is to award players over 30 years old only single-year contracts, which played a part in Ashley Cole quitting Stamford Bridge for Roma last summer.

"The first year of talks I was maybe a little bit nervous," Terry said. "I was edgy and hoping and knocking myself, but I think we've had a good chat. I know their position and they know mine -- I want to stay. My performances are showing that and hopefully they can keep me."

Chelsea's defence came under heavy pressure against PSG after Terry had helped set up Branislav Ivanovic's vital away goal.

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, outstanding against the French champions, was beaten by an Edinson Cavani header, but PSG could not find another goal, despite their coach Laurent Blanc saying his team played "almost the perfect game."

Terry and regular centre-back partner Gary Cahill have been challenged by 20-year-old Kurt Zouma this season, and the Chelsea captain admitted that his time to step aside may soon be imminent.

He hopes, though, that his career can be prolonged in the fashion of his former England teammates.

"When Kurt's played he's been great, when Gaz [Cahill] plays he's been great, so it's hard to get the balance. But we're all rotating and there are enough games to share around," Terry said. "We all want to play every game. Those two are fighting it out and it could be me any time. It's important we remain top of the league and everyone gets their game time.

"When you see the young boys come in -- Kurt has been a revelation -- they're young, fit, strong and hungry, and it makes it even more difficult. But in the same way, myself, Stevie [Steven Gerrard], Rio [Ferdinand] and Lamps [Frank Lampard] have looked after ourselves for the last five, six years and it's helping us in our later careers.

"Hopefully one more [season] and we'll see how we go. I'm taking it year-by-year."
