Netherlands came back from 1-0 down at half-time to beat Brazil 2-1 in their quarter-final on Friday, and Sneijder was quoted as telling Helden: "After a difficult first-half against Brazil, we managed to stay calm. I'd rather have someone like Van Marwijk as coach rather than two idiots like Maradona and Dunga."
However, he insists he did not speak negatively about the duo and simply wanted to highlight Bert van Marwijk's more relaxed style.
"There was a big mistake in the transcription and in the various translations of my words," he said on the Inter Milan website. "In the interview I never referred directly to Maradona and Dunga, whom I have great respect for because of what they have done as players and coaches.
"In the interview, I just talked about the differences that exist between coaches. Each of us cannot be equal to one another. It's regrettable that my words have been misunderstood."
