Ozil, who has been one of the stars of the World Cup so far, has Turkish parents but his father, who moved to Germany in his youth, carries a German passport.

That meant the player carried dual nationality, but he has spent his entire life in Germany and played for the German Under-19 and Under-21 teams.

"It's a pity that Ozil has chosen the wrong passport," Hiddink said. "He is a modern footballer I could use in my team."
