Brazilian federation spokesman Rodrigo Paiva said the protection, which was seen after Julio Cesar received treatment for an injury against Portugal, has been approved by the governing body.

The protection contains a small metal strip, forbidden by FIFA guidelines, but Paiva told reporters that the metallic part is simply part of the fastening and that it had been viewed by the officials ahead of the game.

Julio Cesar said after the game: "It's just to give me extra support. I have used it before. There is nothing wrong with it."

Metal is generally not allowed in protective equipment due to fears it may cause injuries to other players.
