Xabi Alonso is a doubt for Spain's second round match with Portugal after tests revealed the midfielder suffered a sprained ankle in his side's 2-1 victory over Chile.

Alonso was caught by a late tackle from Chile defender Waldo Ponce that clearly left him in some discomfort and he was replaced soon after by Javi Martinez.

Team doctors revealed the extent of Alonso's injury following a post-match assesment, and the Real Madrid midfielder is unsure if he will be fit in time for the Portugal clash on Tuesday.

"I have a sprain in the foot," Alonso said. "We'll have to test it out over the next few days and see how it feels and if I can make the Portugal match."

But team doctor Oscar Luis Celada appeared a bit more optimistic after assessing the results of an X-ray on the ankle.

"The first X-ray confirmed that Alonso had sprained his right ankle when he was violently tackled," Celada said. "But we are optimistic that he will be fit for the second-round match."
