Switzerland 0, Honduras 0
Switzerland and Honduras failed to produce much in the way of eye-pleasing play in their final group stage match Friday, though both teams had a mathematical chance to advance to the round of 16 with wins and some help. The Swiss, who had the best chance to advance with a win and tiebreaker help, failed to solve either Honduran goalkeeper Noel Valladares or their own poor finishing in the attacking third of the field.
• In its three group stage matches, Switzerland scored just one goal and created only 17 scoring chances from open play, which was fourth from the bottom among the 32 teams. In contrast, the Swiss, though far from an attacking juggernaut, reached the round of 16 in 2006 while scoring four goals but creating 41 chances from open play.
• Entering the match, Switzerland hit just two of its 13 open crosses (11.1 percent) in its first two games, but the Swiss completed nine of 30 open crosses (30 percent) through the box against Honduras. Switzerland, obviously, failed to produce a goal from its successful crossing efforts.
• Honduras finished the match with more offsides (9) than shots (8).
