Montrose survived a late scare as they beat Cowdenbeath 2-1 in the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup.
The hosts took the lead just after the half-hour mark when Martin Boyle climbed highest to head home David Grey's cross.
Paul Watson doubled the advantage two minutes before the break when he produced a neat finish from the edge of the box after good work by Craig McLeish.
Watson could have put them out of sight before the interval but for a superb save from Thomas Flynn who tipped his free-kick round the post.
The Miners rarely threatened after the restart and substitute Kyle Miller failed to hit the target with his header 10 minutes from time.
But Marc McKenzie ensured a nervy end for Montrose when he pulled a goal back inside the area in the final minute but the Gable Endies held out to progress through.
