Dundee warmed up for their SPL return by overcoming Peterhead 4-1 on penalties in the Scottish Communities League Cup first round after being held to a goalless draw by the Third Division side after 120 minutes.
Ryan Conroy converted the winning penalty with Dundee's fourth spot-kick after Rab Douglas had saved Callum MacDonald's effort and Scott McLaughlin hit the crossbar for plucky Peterhead, who had the better opportunities to win the tie.
Both goalkeepers produced superb saves in the first half. Douglas pushed away a dipping free-kick from McLaughlin and Paul Jarvie kept out Neil McGregor's acrobatic effort after Scott Ross had headed off his own line from Graham Webster's header.
Peterhead had the ball in the net late on but it was ruled out for an infringement by Rory McAllister.
Webster dragged a shot wide for Dundee in the first period of extra time but the hosts should have won it in the second period when substitute Bryan Deasley, a former Dundee player, headed over the crossbar when unmarked at the far post.
