Belarus 1-0 New Zealand: All Whites beaten

The United States secured their progress into the quarter-finals of the Women's Olympic football tournament with a regulation 3-0 win over Colombia.

• Sundhage not satisfied despite easy win

Megan Rapinoe opened the scoring with a fine dipping shot from outside the area on 32 minutes and the US would have been further ahead at the break but for two desperate goal line clearances from Colombian captain Natalia Gaitan.

Abby Wambach did eventually make the Americans' domination count 17 minutes from time and Carli Lloyd rounded off an excellent team move for the third three minutes later.

The reigning Olympic champions started brightly and could have been two up in the opening 12 minutes but for Sandra Sepulveda as the Colombian keeper got down well to turn the ball away from Alex Morgan and then tipped Wambach's fierce drive over the bar.

Colombia then began to grow into the game though and created a fine chance midway through the half but Carmen Rodallega couldn't get a clean connection on her effort from just inside the area and the ball slipped wide.

The South Americans were then grateful to Gaitan as she made a brave goal line clearance after Sepulveda had got caught under Christie Rampone's free-kick, but the opener eventually arrived for the US just after the half hour mark as Rapinoe cut inside onto her right foot and blasted the ball high into the net from 20 yards.

Pia Sundhage's women could easily then easily have added to their lead before half-time as Morgan had a goal narrowly ruled out for offside before Sepulveda made another good save from Lauren Cheney's header and Gaitan produced her second spectacular clearance off the line when Rapinoe seemed certain to double her tally.

The US continued to boss the game in the second period but had to wait until 17 minutes from time to seal the win as Wambach latched onto Tobin Heath's through ball to slot home her 140th international goal.

Wambach nearly had her second moments later with a scintillating shot from 25 yards that came back off the bar but the third soon followed as Lloyd was played in by Rapinoe to score her second goal of the competition.
