Wondolowski scores in Earthquakes' win over Revs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -- Chris Wondolowski scored in the 15th

minute to help the San Jose Earthquakes beat the New England

Revolution 1-0 on Saturday night in season opener for both

teams.

It was the Earthquakes' first win in a home opener since

entering the league as an expansion team in 2008. San Jose lost

its four previous home openers by a combined score of 6-0.

The loss spoiled Jay Heaps' New England coach debut.

Wondolowski, who tied for the MLS lead last season with 16

goals, extended his scoring streak to six games.

Shea Salinas set up the goal by jumping on an errant pass from

Revolution captain Sharlie Joseph inside New England's half of

the field. Salinas quickly slipped a through ball to

Wondolowski. The U.S. international took one touch and fired a

shot past goalkeeper Matt Reis from just outside the penalty

box.

San Jose, which had only one shutout in its final 15 matches

last season, held on to blank New England despite the

Revolution's increased second-half pressure.

New Earthquakes center back Victor Bernardez snuffed out one of

New England's best chances at an equalizer in the 81st minute.

The Honduran international intercepted a dangerous pass across

the goalmouth by Revolution midfielder Lee Nguyen, allowing

goalkeeper Jon Busch to easily collect the ball.

New England's Benny Feilhaber missed by inches during

second-half injury time. Seconds later, San Jose's Simon Dawkins

pushed a potential clincher just past the far post.
