Boyle misses landmark game

The name Airdrieonians returns after an 11-year break as the team formerly known as Airdrie United take on Hamilton.

They will be without club skipper John Boyle due to an ankle injury.

Manager Jimmy Boyle has overhauled his squad this summer with seven players in line for debuts.

The Excelsior Stadium boss said: ``I believe that we have a stronger squad than last season but playing a full-time side in our first game together will be a real test.

``Hamilton will be a real test but it would be nice to record a win now that we have reverted back to Airdrieonians.''

Hamilton include former Portsmouth midfielder Liam Walker as a trialist as they look for revenge after losing to the Diamonds at this stage last season.

The New Douglas Park men will be without the suspended Andy Ryan and the injured Kieran Millar with recently appointed player-manager Alex Neil delaying naming his team until a number of fitness tests are carried out ahead of kick-off.

Neil said: ``We lost 1-0 to Airdrie a year ago to a really late goal and it would be nice to get our season off to a much more positive start this time out.''
