Montpellier v Sochaux: Preview

Montpellier will be hopeful of moving out of the bottom three of Ligue 1 when FC Sochaux visit this weekend.

Jean Fernandez' side have only one point from their two opening games, and a negative goal difference - but those matches were against the two powerhouses of French football, Paris St Germain and Monaco.

Indeed, Montpellier were encouraged by their 1-1 draw against PSG in the opening match, and were furious with the referee in their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Monaco.

Sochaux should be an easier prospect, though Montpellier have defender Daniel Congre suspended after being red-carded against Monaco.

The suspension has highlighted Montpellier's lack of defensive cover however and Fernandez will seek to bring in a defender or defensive midfielder before the transfer window shuts.

He said at a press conference this week: ``We must bring in a defensive player, a versatile player who can play in defence or midfield.''

Tunisian international midfielder Jamel Saihi's long-term injury is likely to keep him out for longer than expected.

Saihi had been due to return to training in June but this will not take place before next month at the earliest.

Sochaux, who are ahead of Montpellier on goal difference, should have striker Sloan Privat, who suffered a blow to the pelvis during the defeat by Lyon, available for selection.

Fellow forward Edouard Butin, who has suffered knock on the knee in the same game, is doubtful however.

Defender Jerome Roussillon and midfielder Joseph Lopy are both back on the road to recovery after injury but neither will be in contention for the Montpellier match.
