Valenciennes v Stade de Reims: Preview

Valenciennes boss Daniel Sanchez knows his side can ill afford to lose Saturday's Ligue 1 encounter with Stade Reims.

Valenciennes began the season with a 3-0 defeat of Toulouse, but have since lost seven straight games, conceding 14 goals in the process, to slump to the bottom of Ligue 1 ahead of the clash with the mid-table visitors.

``Everyone is aware of the importance of this game,'' Sanchez said on www.va-fc.com.

``This match is more than important because the results of other matches this weekend could, for once, be favourable to us.

``But before thinking about the other results, it is necessary that we are positive.''

Valenciennes pushed Paris St Germain close in their most recent match at their Stade du Hainaut home and lost 2-0 at Sochaux last time out.

Sanchez is confident there a signs of progress but would sacrifice a good performance if it meant an end to the losing streak.

``We must do whatever it takes to ensure that the wheel turns,'' he added.

``What we need now is points, it is not playing well. We approach this game by saying that we must work as well together as possible.

``We knew that the season would be difficult. But we have to maintain the level. It is up to us to prove it on the field.''

Reims drew with big-spending and high-flying Monaco last weekend and are chasing a second away win of the season after victory at Lyon in August.

Defender Mohamed Fofana said on www.stade-de-reims.com: ``Valenciennes have their backs against the wall. It's a bit like the match in Bordeaux (a 0-0 draw).

``It will be war and it will be very hard. They will want to stop their downward spiral.

``But if you are well organised, disciplined and if you're smart, you can hurt them.''
