Mainz v TSG Hoffenheim: Preview

Hoffenheim coach Markus Babbel has been given a vote of confidence by the club's general manager Andreas Muller ahead of the weekend trip to Mainz.

After a defeat to Bayern Munich and a 3-3 draw with Greuther Furth, the club's ambitions of playing in Europe may have to be put on ice for another year.

However, Muller insists Babbel is still an asset to the club.

``I am absolutely convinced by Babbel's quality,'' he told the Bild newspaper. ``He is doing a very good job in Hoffenheim.

``I see the way he is working with the team.''

Hoffenheim currently lie 14th as they head to Mainz and Muller says their immediate aim must be to steady the ship rather than letting European football become an obsession.

``Maybe we could talk about that if we had four more points, but realistically a place in Europe is only possible in one or two years.''

Daniel Williams is back in the Hoffenheim squad after suspension, giving Babbel another option for tomorrow.

Hosts Mainz could have been fourth in the table had they not conceded a late equaliser against Leverkusen a week ago, but their coach Thomas Tuchel says the draw was perhaps not such a bad thing.

``If there is any good in the late equaliser, then it is that I don't have to answer questions about our Champions League ambitions,'' he said.

``It would be crazy to let our eighth place mislead us. We know how tight things are and how much hard work we have got ahead.''

Indeed, the two teams could trade places in the table should Hoffenheim win since 11 clubs are all packed in within four points.

Meanwhile, the condition of Hoffenheim midfielder Boris Vukcevic has improved so that he has been transferred from the intensive care station of a Heidelberg clinic to a rehabilitation ward.

The Bosnia-born Germany youth international has been in a coma since being involved in a car crash on his way to training four weeks ago.

He suffered serious head injuries in the accident.
