Bordeaux v Bastia: Preview

Bordeaux manager Francis Gillot is hoping his side's goalscoring instincts return when Bastia come to town tomorrow.

Les Girondins sit a disappointing 10th in the standings after a run of four successive Ligue 1 defeats, which were compounded further last night by defeat in the Europa League.

An unfortunate Cedric Carasso own goal - which came when Rodrigo's powerful shot cannoned back off the crossbar and on to the goalkeeper - saw Benfica win the first leg of their last-16 tie in Portugal, setting up what should be an exciting return match next week.

Before that, though, Bastia arrive at Stade Chaban Delmas and manager Gillot knows his side need to show a more clinical edge if they are to get back to winning ways, having scored just one in their last four league outings.

``You can never say you're happy if you've just lost a match,'' the Bordeaux boss said.

``The return leg will be complicated as Benfica are still a big side, but we can use this match as a benchmark.

``However, in football, the main thing is to score goals and, once again, we didn't put the ball in the back of the net.''

Bastia come into the match buoyed by last weekend's 1-0 derby victory over fellow Corsican side Ajaccio.

An injury-time skirmish somewhat overshadowed the 1-0 win but it is a result that pleased coach Frederic Hantz.

``The important thing was to win and we did the right thing by taking a lot of risks offensively,'' he said.

``I regret the incident late in the game but I will not make any specific comments.

``We are pleased to see that we are progressing. It was a very special game because we were in need of success.

``Tactically and mentally, we have progressed. But this is a game and this victory is only one step. We need to show further progress when we face two big teams in Bordeaux and Lyon in the coming weeks.''
