Montpellier v Troyes: Preview

Rene Girard hopes Montpellier can get back to making headlines for their football in tomorrow's clash with Troyes.

The 58-year-old was left less than impressed by the announcement from outspoken club president Louis Nicollin that he would not be offered a contract extension at the end of the season - amid reports Argentina legend Diego Maradona was being lined up to take over at Stade de la Mosson, which he felt played a part in the 2-0 defeat at Nice.

Girard guided Montpellier to a first Ligue 1 championship last season, but since his side have struggled for consistency at home and in Europe, where they finished bottom of Group B.

However, the former France Under-21 coach is determined to focus on getting the side back to winning ways rather than the constant off-field speculation as they look to be involved in the shake-up for a top-six finish.

``It takes more to kill me,'' Girard told reporters at Montpellier's pre-match press conference.

``I was a little bitter after the game with Nice because I think there was something else to do there, but it was not disastrous either.

``However, what I did not like is that we found a few of our old demons, when we lacked aggression.

``It is always annoying, but we have discussed things and we will try to do better against Troyes at home.

``What is most important now is getting three points and we must try to play with more freedom in our heads.''

Left-back Henri Bedimo will return from suspension for Montpellier and midfielder Benjamin Stambouli is expected back from injury.

Troyes, meanwhile, are battling for survival at the other end of the table, and lifted themselves off the bottom of Ligue 1 with a 4-2 win over Reims, who had previously pulled off a shock win over leaders Paris St Germain.

Midfielder Stephane Darbion came through the youth ranks at Montpellier, and is expecting a tough game against his old club.

``We should not forget they are French champions,'' he said on Troyes' official website, www.estac.fr.

``They are a good team and have come back into form.

``However, we are also confident after our win over Reims.

``We are convinced we can stay up, there are more than enough matches (left) and we are ready to fight.''
