James Tyler: Absolutely, Rog. I've also got an eye on some NASCAR. Curious if I can make "he turns left!" seem compelling in text form.

  •

    Roger Bennett: Rock on

  •

James Tyler: Must dash to handle the postgame. Many thanks again to everyone who forsook the pub in favor of our humble chat room.

  •

Roger Bennett: JT and I will live chat the Little League World series if the team from Liverpool can beat Uganda

  •

James Tyler: Not sure yet. Still sorting it all out. Keep checking ESPNFC.com for news of live chats!

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Does next weekend's chat cover the early game on espn2?

  •

James Tyler: Next week. Have to buck up and move on. No point dwelling.

  •

    [Comment from Simon]
When should we start to forgive Skrtl, JT?

  •

James Tyler: To summarize: at least it's not a defeat! Whatever *it* is still isn't grand. But we all move on. Mancini will be pleading Sheikh Mansour for some money this week.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Can't wait for Sahin! Have a great week gents, and thanks!

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
    Thanks guys, fun as usual

  •

    [Comment from Phil]
Lesson #1: Liverpool needs to stop taking their foot off the gas after 70 mins.

  •

    [Comment from zach from 804]
Roger, JT, I appreciate the coverage! Until next time

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Lost our best player and still drew with the defending champions? I would've taken that result at the start.

  •

James Tyler: Agree, Rog. Good for Rodgers to stand tall against a better side. Nice way to rebound from opening day humiliation, but he will rue the three points thrown away late on.

  •

James Tyler: Bright spots: Joe Allen, Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey
Low points: MARTIN SKRTEL!!!!, Lucas' injury. Borini still struggling to assimilate.

Of course, Luis Suarez straddles the line between both.

  •

Roger Bennett: Follow us on the old twitter. @rogbennett @jamestylerespn

    roll on next weekend...

  •

Roger Bennett: Huge result for the Rodgers project. With Arsenal looming next week, a loss would have been knee-capping. Frantic stuff. So many hard questions for City fans to ask though. Uninspired fare...

  •

    [Comment from Marin]
Those 3 points belonged to us....this was charity for MC.

  •

    [Comment from Baron Veron]
That miss is the first thing Joe Allen has done wrong today.

  •

    [Comment from Juan]
if Liverpool can get some cohesion and the players commit to the style of play, Liverpool could have an excellent team by the end of the year. At the very least they'll be aesthetically pleasing

  •

    [Comment from Los Angeles Red]
Today Liverpool proves that if they sell Daniel Agger this will likely be a truly miserable year.

  •

James Tyler: An absorbing, pulsating but madcap 90 minutes ends with honors shared.

  •

James Tyler: FULL TIME: Liverpool 4, Manchester City 0. Or rather, Liverpool 2, Martin Skrtel 2.

  •

    [Comment from KJ]
    Terrible result

  •

    [Comment from john marston]
    Too much talking from Suarez....

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Suarez on pace for 38 yellow cards for dissent

  •

    [Comment from Balsac T. Begger]
Feel like this is a lucky break for City.

  •

James Tyler: Joe Allen has it in space but shoots over the bar.

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD: Suarez complains a little too vehemently for a foul not given a free-kick.

  •

    James Tyler: Throw-in for LFC.

  •

James Tyler: Silva with an out-swinger, it's cleared to Tevez and the Argentine volleys well wide. Kop End urging one final attack from the home team.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
    Liverpool 2 - 2 Martin Skrtel

  •

James Tyler: Corner for City as Kolarov's chip into the box is blocked by Gerrard. 90 seconds left. I'm trembling.

  •

Roger Bennett: Need to keep the tie. but big debut for Rodgers... means the world

  •

    [Comment from Lee]
win ,lose or draw .... have LFC proved something here today ?

  •

    [Comment from C.J.]
Oh Suarez. Does all the hard stuff, but can't seem to do the easy stuff. He's an enigma for sure.

  •

James Tyler: Glen Johnson's speculative shot is held by Joe Hart. Was hit right at him.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
I'm about to pull an Elvis on my TV.

  •

James Tyler: Straight up the other end, Reina darts out sharply to prevent Yaya Toure.

  •

James Tyler: Zabaleta's cross is cleared. Liverpool break, but Suarez is too wide to put in a decent cross. Couldn't find Shelvey in the middle.

  •

James Tyler: City's turn to apply pressure. Yaya gets past Allen but can't beat Gerrard. Liverpool nervy on the ball and unable to clear.

  •

    [Comment from Derry]
Props to the Kop. They're still singing for Liverpool.

  •

James Tyler: Dzeko halted by Sterling on the left flank. Throw-in for the visitors deep in Liverpool territory.

  •

James Tyler: Gerrard thumps it in but it goes through to Joe Hart safely.

  •

Roger Bennett: This game teetering between being an exquisite technical battle and a sloppy hot mess. Either way, you cant take your eyes off it...

  •

James Tyler: Four added minutes, folks. Bums are squeaking.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
    Edge of seat stuff here

  •

    James Tyler: Absolute chaos.

  •

James Tyler: Carroll couldn't head it cleanly, Suarez shoots at Zabaleta's torso, then another effort is cleared off the line by Rodwell as Carroll has a better second header.

  •

James Tyler: Corner over everyone, drops for Shelvey whose shot is blocked by Kolo Toure. Another corner.

  •

James Tyler: (Cue Skrtel redemption header...)

  •

James Tyler: Sterling's turn to chip a cross in. Headed behind for a corner.

  •

    James Tyler: The money, Dan.

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
Dzeko or Carrol...who would you rather not have?

  •

    [Comment from Paul Konchesky]
    He's still better than me.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Shellvey has been outstanding

  •

James Tyler: Chance for City! Kolarov's fizzing low cross from the left is hoicked over the bar by Dzeko at the edge of the six yard box.

  •

    Roger Bennett: What a lump

  •

James Tyler: Skrtel should only be allowed to use his head to make contact with the ball.

  •

    [Comment from cssounders (efc)]
skrtel should just stop passing backwards

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
Extra time winner for Dzeko or Carroll?

  •

Roger Bennett: He looks like one of the models in the Robert Palmer Addicted to Love video

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR LIVERPOOL: Borini off, Andy Carroll on.

  •

    [Comment from john]
Carroll's little "bun" makes me think he's John Belushi in "Samarai Striker"

  •

    [Comment from Jaime]
What I wouldn't give for 30 more mins.

  •

James Tyler: Suarez tries to run through Zabaleta but is rebuffed.

  •

Roger Bennett: this is a fabulous game of football...

Brendan paying tribute to Cruyff here. He used to lump on the big man when they were losing too - Julio Salinas or even Alexanko.

  •

James Tyler: Johnson's cross is cleared by Kompany.

  •

James Tyler: Sterling can plonk crosses on his head, in theory. Though Raheem has been quieter in the second half.

    [Comment from Sean]
As much as Rodgers likes Borini it's interesting to see Carroll replace him instead of sterling

  •

James Tyler: If there's ever a time for a career-saving strike, it's now Andy.

  •

Roger Bennett: Here he comes... Predictions? More likely to score game winner or...?

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR LIVERPOOL: Borini off, Andy Carroll on.

  •

James Tyler: Dzeko shoots wide from the edge of the area.

  •

James Tyler: The mix of Evertonians in this live chat has made it more fun today. And of course, infinitely more painful.

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
You'll never walk alone..well maybe Skrtel will on his way home

  •

    [Comment from Baron Veron]
Joe Allen tightly marking David Silva makes this look like an under-12s game

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Liverpool! Shelvey teed up by Gerrard from 25 yards and fizzes it narrowly over the bar.

  •

Roger Bennett: Shelvey! Better game in a Liverpool shirt for that gent?

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
This is #LFC. Great play and positivity undone by brainless errors.

  •

James Tyler: Skrtel gift-wraps a backpass to Carlos Tevez, who cruises past a helpless Reina and sidefoots it in.

  •

    Roger Bennett: Silence. Giggle. Silence

  •

James Tyler: GOAL FOR MAN CITY

  •

  •

James Tyler: YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME

  •

    Roger Bennett: Silence

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Anyone with stats on how many passes City have misplaced? Liverpool's pressing looks impressive.

  •

James Tyler: Lovely skill by Tevez up the other end to dance into the box. He finds Toure wide but Skrtel blocks the cross.

  •

James Tyler: Suarez gets past Zabaleta but can't beat Kompany on the edge of the box.

  •

    James Tyler: 12 minutes left

  •

James Tyler: Dzeko ruins some promising build-up play by firing over the bar from a narrow angle.

  •

James Tyler: Borini hoists a speculative cross in from the right corner. It finds Suarez in the box but he can't control and shoot.

  •

    [Comment from Stu]
Everton to run thru unbeaten in all competitions. THen still dont give moyes transfer money and they sell a couple

  •

James Tyler: "FINALLY," say all the Manchester City fans, non-partisans, and human beings on Planet Earth.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MANCHESTER CITY: Milner off, David Silva on.

  •

Roger Bennett: All fine here. Just shocked with the realization watching this game: Everton are going to win the league

  •

James Tyler: Toure tries to find Tevez but Jose Enrique intercepts.

  •

James Tyler: You alright, Rog? Fearful of Liverpool?

  •

James Tyler: 16 minutes remaining. Crowd not sure whether to scream or chew fingernails.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Steven Gerrard fancied the win ahead of the match. Looks like he's put his money where his mouth is: richardp1975.files.wordpress.com/2012/08/shoes.…

  •

James Tyler: Sorry, was Glen Johnson felled in the box. Replay showed Kolarov's shoelace glanced the ball.

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
@SeanARubio If you're talking goals, yes. Wins/losses, no.

  •

James Tyler: Liverpool screaming for a penalty off Kolarov but nothing given. Would have been harsh; City's left back brought Suarez down but won the ball in the process. Still the Reds swarm.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Joe Allen worth more than Henderson, Downing and Adam combined. Surely a steal at this rate.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Strange to say, but selling Rodwell seems like better and better business by the game

  •

    James Tyler: 20 minutes left.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Allen's interceptions/tackles have been huge in filling in for Lucas

  •

James Tyler: Rodgers' team simply rolled up its sleeves, popped its collars and went about scoring again.

  •

James Tyler: Anfield's quite sing-songy again. Reds teams of recent seasons would have processed that equalizer by dropping deep into an emo funk and swiftly conceding another goal.

  •

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
even a blind squirrel finds a nut no big deal, city will come back

  •

James Tyler: So. 22 minutes to go. What is next?

  •

Roger Bennett: Jack Rodwell... is like Manchester City's Jonah and the Whale.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Great free-kick from Suarez. Joe Hart may wonder if he could have moved quicker. Was he making silly faces at Suarez before he hit it?

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR LFC (that I missed amid the chaos): Jose Enrique on, Kelly off. Meaning Glen Johnson goes back to right back.

  •

  •

    Just can't get enough

  •

James Tyler: Of course, if you think the free-kick was un-earned, you might not be too happy right now.

  •

Roger Bennett: Hart got that all wrong

  •

James Tyler: Curled with aplomb around the wall. Hart didn't get across in time. Inch-perfect. Not even Fabio Aurelio took free-kicks that nicely.

  •

James Tyler: That's what Suarez is supposed to do.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Back to winning the league, Rog

  •

James Tyler: Luis Suarez curls the free kick in at Hart's near-post!

  •

    Roger Bennett: Luis Suarez. Stunner.

  •

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL FOR LIVERPOOL!!!!!

  •

Roger Bennett: His weight in gold. 70-80M

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
You are running a club guys, oil rich owner, how much is YaYa Toure worth?

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
City's plan is simple. When all is going awry, launch Yaya. It works very well indeed.

  •

    [Comment from Mancini]
I wish I could field a team of 10 Yayas and a one Joe Hart

  •

James Tyler: Can the Reds respond? Shelvey passes to Gerrard, who of course opts to shoot. It's blocked by Rodwell but LFC awarded a free kick for hand ball.

So much for Liverpool's "disciplined rearguard"

  •

James Tyler: Tevez' cross eludes Reina and breaks off Kelly for Yaya Toure to sweep home past Coates on the line.

  •

  •

James Tyler: A sloppy painful equalizer, but one that City had been pushing for.

  •

Roger Bennett: Dodgy keeping have a season to remember.

  •

James Tyler: GOAL FOR MAN CITY!

  •

James Tyler: City is now starting to threaten. That or Liverpool is sitting just a little deeper...

  •

Roger Bennett: Balo passed it to Tevez just twice in his 62 minutes on the field.

  •

James Tyler: A rather quiet game for Super Mario. Couple of wasted chances, more than a few fouls earned.

  •

Roger Bennett: Balotelli poor today. Dzeko a lump, but will offer more than the Italian.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MAN CITY: Balotelli off, Dzeko on

  •

    [Comment from Stu]
offside but super mario still cant hit empty net

  •

James Tyler: City hits the post!

  •

Roger Bennett: Still half an hour to go. Entering a crucial phase of the game here for Liverpool

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
    Yaya time.

  •

James Tyler: Curious to see Nasri pulled, but he's been awful. Rodwell's inclusion should push Yaya upfield.

  •

    [Comment from Gudg]
City are doing their best to give this game to liverpool, who are kindly declining these options

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MAN CITY: Nasri off, Rodwell on.

  •

Roger Bennett: Starting to feel this game is some kind of surreal move by Mancini in his power play with Marwood

  •

Roger Bennett: I prefer the green he left behind at Goodison. Great piece of business by Everton

  •

James Tyler: Panic in the City box as Gerrard scampers in, ball's taken from him but breaks nicely for Suarez. Sadly for the home fans, Suarez floats the cross in to no-one in particular. Groans all around Anfield.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
More pain for Roger. Jack Rodwell's supposed to come on next in a different blue.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Milner handles Glen Johnson's left-flank run with confidence.

  •

Roger Bennett: Rodwell coming on. Mancini must think City need some sideways passing to stabilize the ship

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Here's one for a statsie: how many goals did City get off set pieces last year?

  •

James Tyler: Borini angles a cross in from the left. Zabaleta nods it clear. Ball is back with Liverpool.

  •

James Tyler: Disagree, Sean; Lucas is vital. That said, Allen and incoming Sahin will ease the blow. Last season, Jay Spearing got all that playing time.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Never thought i would say this after last season, but with Allen on the team now I don't think Lucas being out would be as catastrophic

  •

James Tyler: Set piece doesn't clear the first defender.

  •

Roger Bennett: City's delivery from set pieces has been scandalous

  •

James Tyler: Balotelli wins a corner off Kelly.

  •

James Tyler: Balotelli chopped down by Coates but no foul given. Commentator reckons that the game is "getting a bit spicy."

  •

James Tyler: Arsenal already has two...

  •

    James Tyler: Three draws!

  •

James Tyler: At least Prem managers will be thankful they don't answer to Coventry City's owners: after starting a season with three draws, City has sacked its manager, Andy Thorn.

  •

@Will_Unwin You must be hoping so, old boy.

  •

@MiguelDelaney @bglendenning Yes, Pete's guru. I doubt Daltrey and the Ox were too bothered, and let alone Keith Moon.

  •

James Tyler: Six minutes of the second half gone, and Liverpool has squandered a glorious chance to make it 2-0.

  •

James Tyler: No, Gudg. A great showing, but Rodgers will rotate at will this season. That said, positive for the Reds that Sterling is a part of such tinkering.

  •

    [Comment from Gudg]
Has sterling cemented his place in the starting 11 with this showing?

  •

    James Tyler: So true, Rog.

  •

Roger Bennett: Starting to believe Mancini has played Kolo Toure just to embarrass Brian Marwood and force his hand in the transfer market

  •

James Tyler: Lovely by Borini to steal a sloppy pass, he sprints on goal and centers for Suarez who puts it wide.

  •

Roger Bennett: Nooone scuffs a chance wide with such style as Luis Suarez

  •

    James Tyler: Chance for Liverpool!

  •

James Tyler: 3. Though I hope all of them.

  •

    [Comment from Jamie]
How many more freekicks will Kolarov waste before Balotelli punches him in the mouth?

  •

James Tyler: Still, the electricity in the air when Sterling gets possession and is afforded the chance to run... Raheem must be loving every second of it.

  •

James Tyler: Sterling takes on Kolo Toure and is arm-wrestled to the floor. Ref gives the freekick to City.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan]
Wow, words I never thought I'd hear on TV. 'Very disciplined Liverpool rearguard".

  •

James Tyler: Kolarov wastes the free-kick.

  •

James Tyler: No word on Lucas yet. But Sterling fouls Milner on the right. And on cue, Lucas is gossiping with Andy Carroll on the bench, his right thigh smothered in ice and tape.

    [Comment from kyle]
enough for everton to buy neymar and liverpool cavani.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Flock of Seagulls. They have a haircut.

  •

James Tyler: Depends on seating capacity. LFC and Everton are both about 35k seats behind, say, Old Trafford.

  •

    [Comment from Cody]
Is it this dire for both the North London clubs?

  •

Roger Bennett: Alright. More seriously: better band: Flock of Seagulls or Echo and The Bunnymen?

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Are there any approximations on how much more match day income a groundshare would bring in to either/both teams?

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Surely if it's good enough for Milan...

  •

Roger Bennett: Every game we play at home, both Everton and Liverpool fall further and further behind on the balance sheet

  •

James Tyler: I already have nightmares of both sets of fans setting booby traps for their incoming rivals. I jest though; I think Merseyside tensions have cooled substantially over the years. Has more of a "sibling rivalry" than Montague/Capulet dynamic.

  •

Roger Bennett: EFC Mike. Everton cook 300 corporate meals every match day. United cook something like 18,000

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
I dunno, with the history of both stadiums I would hate to see us depart from Goodison and I am likewise for Kopites at Anfield.

  •

James Tyler: Perhaps we could just dig out Stanley Park and push the two grounds together. Angoodison FieldPark.

  •

Roger Bennett: I would love a groundshare. Would love it. a magical stadium in the middle of the city. Both teams need the $. Will never happen. Ever.

  •

James Tyler: Think you've nailed the problem by saying "surely both sets of supporters see the practical benefits..."

  •

    [Comment from Doug GFOP]
JT and RG....why are merseysiders so against a city of liverpool stadium with both teams sharing it? surely both sets of supporters see the practical benefits of one...reduced cost, increase revenues

  •

James Tyler: Oh, Rog, here's a good question for us:

  •

James Tyler: Man City, Chelsea, Man United, no idea

  •

Roger Bennett: Follow us on Twitter during the week:
    @rogbennett
    @jamestylerespn

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
JT, Roger; Care to predict the top 6 spots in the EPL this year?

  •

James Tyler: My take on City: they just need to wake up. The formation is giving Kompany and Kolo far too many Liverpool players to handle in the attacking third. Firm up a touch, pull the full-backs into a conventional defensive stance, build from the back. And don't panic.

  •

Roger Bennett: EFC Mike. Early early days. But Naismith and Mirallas coming off the bench def an upgrade to Straq and Vellios... i love the joy the gents are playing with. West Brom. 3rd v 4th top of the table clash next week...

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
    @henrywinter It's called Baba O'Riley, Henry.

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
Roger, with Mirallas signed and Niang about to be locked up..you think Everton could be set for Europe next year? Via a cup win or top 5 finish?

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
They need to put Dezeko in for Super Mario.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
    Silva!

  •

    [Comment from Todd]
Mike, Roger: Really? One lucky goal? Let's count the chances. 1) Borini's chance that went wide, 2) Gerrard's cross that was almost an own goal by Kompany, 3) Suarez's quick turn on the pass from Allen and the curler that went wide, 4) Skirtel's goal. Now let's count the chaces for Man City. None... Possession means nothing if you can't create chances

  •

Roger Bennett: What do City fans want to see different in the second half? Yaya to find the opportunity to roam forward? Somehow City need to find space for Tevez. He and Balo appear to be running off different playbooks

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Hey guys, thought s on PSG's bumbling start so far?

  •

Roger Bennett: TinMan. It hurt at the outset. But the pain was eased by the fact that the season after he left cahill arrived and we had a Champions League season.

  •

    [Comment from TinMan]
Roger, how does it feel when Rooney comes to play at Goodison?

  •

Roger Bennett: Thanks Mike. Sense at last on this message board

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
One lucky goal Roger dont overreact

  •

James Tyler: Good eye, PeterG. And it helps that the athleticism of modern players gives managers more opportunities to experiment.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Seems to me like the 3-X-X is having a bit of a renaissance. Growing number of teams using it with success in top football, Napoli, Italy, etc.

  •

James Tyler: Rog, of course WBA's resurgence is all because of Steve Clarke, the man that failed to drill sense into Kenny Dalglish last year.

  •

James Tyler: You should try competitive deep-sea diving, Jeremy.

  •

Roger Bennett: West Brom players watching this game look at each other and say "How good must we be?"

  •

    [Comment from Jeremy]
JT, I finally exhaled after 45 mins. That's got to be a record.

  •

James Tyler: 7-3 on shots for LFC

  •

James Tyler: POSSESSION: 48% for Liverpool, 52% for Man City

  •

  •

James Tyler: Kolarov's FK is blocked. Reds clear. Ref blows for half-time.

  •

James Tyler: In theory, yes. City's XI has so much class that it's not been much of an advantage. If anything, Sterling/Borini have had more room on the wings, and Suarez has had more time to turn and shoot. Beyond that, not sure.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
By the way, why did Manicini opt to field a 3-5-2 against a 4-3-3? Surely Liverpool come out ahead tactically.

  •

James Tyler: Down the other end, it's Balotelli vs. Sterling in the right corner, a battle that City's striker wins. Free kick for City.

  •

James Tyler: Gerrard finds Suarez on the edge of the box. Better defending to stop the striker's run.

  •

James Tyler: 30 seconds of added time remaining.

  •

James Tyler: Borini with two defenders pursuing him down the flank. He does the only smart thing: shoots tamely on goal. It's well wide.

  •

James Tyler: Kolarov delivers a better cross but the Reds hook it downfield.

  •

James Tyler: Another set-piece for City. Someone hold me.

  •

Roger Bennett: Reminder. Two words: Carling Cup

  •

James Tyler: Rog, all I'll say is this: I can't wait until our next Everton live-chat.

  •

    [Comment from Reminder]
    Roger, 4 words: Carling Cup semi-final !!!

  •

Roger Bennett: Dont be JT. City wont score twice till the second half

  •

James Tyler: Kolarov takes it but can't clear the first defender.

  •

    James Tyler: Now I'm nervous.

  •

James Tyler: Tevez with a promising infield run, but Glen Johnson does well to get in front of Milner to knock it out for a corner.

  •

Roger Bennett: JT -- for some reason, when Liverpool had a victory parade, the players would throw Dentyne from the bus

  •

    [Comment from Aaron GFOP]
Allen like an unwavering terrier all over the pitch breaking up play and connecting play.

  •

    [Comment from Jason]
    Rog this isn't the 1980s

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Where is statsie? I'd like to see the possession stats in the past 15-20 minutes

  •

James Tyler: Allen searches for Suarez on the edge of the box, the Uruguayan has time to pivot and shoot but curls it wide. Crowd upset.

  •

James Tyler: Oh, definitely Rog. I'm already plotting victory parade routes right past our old school. Ticker tape, confetti, Lowenbrau.

  •

James Tyler: Down the other end, Tevez tries to loose Balotelli in the box but Reina gallops out to snaffle the ball.

  •

Roger Bennett: Liverpool to win title JT?

  •

James Tyler: Skrtel's speculative long ball is well chased down by Sterling. Kompany shoves the teenagers off the ball but no foul. Smartly done by Vinny.

  •

James Tyler: Right, and I must calm myself. Five minutes to half-time, Liverpool looking sharp but it only ever takes a second to undo all the hard work.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassage]
Thought from Downing - I'm probably going to end up at QPR next week

  •

James Tyler: Someone for Raheem Sterling to mentor. At 17, the Academy product can surely start giving classes.

    [Comment from Jason]
Nou Camp, Bernabeu, San Siro, Old Trafford, Wembley (I'm a Chelsea fan)

  •

James Tyler: "Time to give Middlesbrough a ring."

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Penny for Downing's thoughts? Sterling has been superb through the first 35 mins

  •

James Tyler: Still LFC piles forward. Suarez, Shelvey and Gerrard all combine. Move ends when Gerrard chips forward for Martin Kelly who didn't continue his run down the flank.

  •

Roger Bennett: Goodison, Goodison, Goodison, Anfield, Goodison

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Rog, JT, Top 5 stadiums in English football?

  •

Roger Bennett: City really missing Kun. Not just his menace. But his movement creates space for Tevez...

Sterling has been awesome so far. This is fun

    [Comment from @pat_armitage]
    Wambach-esque header from Skrtl.

  •

Roger Bennett: Anfield full throated. Few stadia like it.

  •

James Tyler: Important will be pressing for a second goal. Can't rest on 1-0 against this City team. Tricky ten minutes await for both teams prior to halftime.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
    Grt hdd gl from Skrtl.

  •

James Tyler: Anfield erupts into throaty, probably lager-aided song.

  •

    [Comment from cssounders]
couldn't tell if that was skrtel or shelvey..bald problems

  •

    [Comment from @pat_armitage]
Zabaleta got absolutely eviscerated on that header.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
Right through Hart's Arms, what a bullet!!!

  •

James Tyler: Skrtel starts far from goal and thunders in between Kolarov and Zabaleta to absolutely crush that through Joe Hart's gloves.

  •

    Roger Bennett: SKTL

  •

    [Comment from John]
    LETS GOOO!!!!

  •

    [Comment from Aaron GFOP]
    Skrtl!!!!!!

  •

James Tyler: An absolutely thunderous header at the Kop End from a corner!

  •

Roger Bennett: Was just typing this: Keep watching JT. Though would love to hear how Manchester City fans are feeling about the game so far. Touch and go... unconvincing at the back.

  •

    James Tyler: MARTIN SKRTEL!

  •

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL FOR LIVERPOOL!

  •

James Tyler: I wouldn't mind that.

  •

    [Comment from sure]
Sterling needs to start every game

  •

James Tyler: Half-chance for LFC! Gerrard's right-flank cross is shinned narrowly over the bar by Kompany.

  •

James Tyler: Suarez' angled cross eludes the two Reds in the penalty area. Still the home side keeps the ball in City's half.

  •

James Tyler: See, Rog? Shelvey's having a decent game.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
They could sign Hope Solo and take tabloid heat off of Suarez

  •

James Tyler: 14 minutes to half-time. Ish.

  •

James Tyler: City rumbles up the other end but Balotelli blasts a shot over the bar.

  •

James Tyler: Shelvey with a lovely long pass for Suarez, the Uruguayan controls it well but tumbles under pressure and looks for a foul call that never comes.

  •

Roger Bennett: Rapinoe is Evertonian in her style of play dont you think? Shades of Stevie Peanuts

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Roger, why would Liverpool bother with Clint Dempsey? Surely, we can agree that the American they really want is Megan Rapinoe.

  •

James Tyler: Another blocked shot for Liverpool via Vinny Kompany's head. Liverpool starting to ratchet themselves to life.

  •

James Tyler: Borini has some way until he's beloved like Kuyt. But fans buried in the Kop End really do love a guy that tries hard even if the end product is far from grand. Sums it up, really.

  •

    [Comment from ThePost]
Is Rodgers already working on his Anfield memoir?

  •

James Tyler: Gerrard plays it short to Suarez, who misses the ball completely. City breaks upfield but Joe Allen and Martin Kelly take the ball off Nasri's boot.

  •

Roger Bennett: Borini. The Kop love to see that attitude in a player. Kuyt-ian right JT?

  •

James Tyler: Borini shoots inside the box following a nifty spin to face goal. It's blocked out for a corner.

  •

James Tyler: Anfield faithful apoplectic as Glen Johnson's slick slide tackle on Milner to win possession is ruled a foul by Andre Marriner.

  •

James Tyler: Rodgers making plenty of notes. Balotelli tumbles under pressure from Gerrard. Referee awards throw-in instead.

  •

James Tyler: Nasri whooshes it to the far post, Reina punches and misses, ball sails out for a goal kick. BREATHE.

  •

James Tyler: Silly play by Liverpool. Johnson plays an absurd backpass across goal for Coates, one that Balotelli steals before being fouled by Kelly. Free-kick on the left edge of the box.

  •

Roger Bennett: You missed Flock of Seagulls too Roy

  •

    [Comment from Roy]
Why wasn't I living in the 1980's when we showed up and won?

  •

James Tyler: 25 mins in, still scoreless. But a different kind of 0-0 to the one at Stoke earlier today.

  •

James Tyler: Not sure what to say to that, Tom. Other than "....."

  •

Roger Bennett: Nothing like games at Anfield for the microphones to pick up the blustering swearing of particularly loud Liverpool fans. Classic touch.

  •

    [Comment from Tom]
Gerrard will score two goals! You heard it here first!

  •

James Tyler: Slick interplay by Gerrard, Shelvey and Sterling down the left side but Kolarov reads it well and puts an end to it.

  •

James Tyler: To be fair -- and it's only the second game -- it will take significant time to evolve Liverpool from HOOF AND HOPE back to the PASS AND MOVE of the 1980s vintage.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
That possession stat doesn't bode well for us. 61% to City. Surely if Rodgers can't lead in possession...

  •

Roger Bennett: Yaya Toure leads City in touches with 20 but only 2 in the final third. City would like to get him on the ball in more advanced spaces

  •

James Tyler: Rodgers and Mancini both stalking the touchline. Both men experiencing different grades of frustration.

  •

    [Comment from ThePost]
Man of the match for me I expect

  •

James Tyler: 20 mins in, still 0-0. Borini should have opened the scoring, Tevez' deflected shot should have equalized. Lucas already in the physio's room, watching this on TV.

  •

    [Comment from John]
the post always has a good game at anfield.

  •

James Tyler: Tevez gets the better of Reina on the touchline. Goalie flounders in trying to stop his shot, it glances Martin Kelly's chest and bobbles off the post and stays out. Liverpool clears.

  •

    [Comment from Sean]
weirdest off the post shot i've ever seen

  •

Roger Bennett: Holy Holy Tevez. That was outstanding

  •

James Tyler: Off the post for City!

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
    #GoGoRaheemSterling

  •

James Tyler: Should have buried that.

  •

James Tyler: Sterling with some left-wing stepovers, a lovely inswinging cross and Borini darts between the defenders to volley wide from close range.

  •

James Tyler: How did Borini miss that?

  •

    James Tyler: CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL!

  •

James Tyler: No -- rather eerily, Sahin might just replace Lucas if the Brazilian has a long-term or difficult muscle injury.

  •

    [Comment from Tom]
Do you think Sahin will replace Gerrard in the starting XI?

  •

James Tyler: Kono: they're happy. It's still 0-0! Sun's shining, etc. At least that's how I feel.

  •

    [Comment from Kono]
The Kop seem quiet today. Are they tense or just enjoying a lovely, sunny Liverpool day?

  •

James Tyler: City doing more of the probing towards goal early on, but Skrtel/Coates communicating well to intercept.

  •

James Tyler: Suarez tries to dribble past one, then two, then three City defenders on the right touchline. Ball's quickly cleared as his control lets him down.

  •

James Tyler: The fifteenth minute has arrived. Really not much to report as yet. A rather gentle Sunday kickabout so far.

  •

James Tyler: Kolo Toure finds Balotelli at the edge of the box but he's coolly dispossessed. Moments later, Tevez gets just enough room from Coates to loft in a cross. It drifts over everyone for a goal kick.

  •

Roger Bennett: You are human Kyle

  •

    [Comment from Kyle]
Why is it every time they show Suarez on screen my natural reaction is to scream obscenities at the television? Is that normal?

  •

James Tyler: Best of all: NO JAY SPEARING IN THE MATCHDAY SQUAD.

  •

James Tyler: One for the future, but glad to see Rodgers unafraid to mix and match.

  •

    [Comment from Aaron GFOP]
JT, what do you think of Coates? Seems too relaxed at times but can be brilliant as demonstrated last year.

  •

James Tyler: Promising run by Suarez but his through-ball for Borini is overhit. Goal kick for City.

  •

James Tyler: Good work down the right flank for City, but the near-post cross is caught by Reina.

  •

James Tyler: Some lovely backwards tiki-taka from Liverpool. Both fullbacks and Reina looking strong in their sedate passing triangle.

  •

Roger Bennett: I wrote it with John Williams

  •

Roger Bennett: It is the theme song to BEING LIVERPOOL Peter G

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
"Oh Borini!" An opera in 3 parts by Roger Bennet.

  •

    [Comment from john]
I'm waiting for Liverpool to sign Skrtel's brother, Vwl

  •

James Tyler: Sterling has his first scamper of the game, darting infield. He loses possession but it breaks for Borini. Kolarov handles the Italian with ease, even nutmegging him in the corner. Oof.

  •

    Roger Bennett: Oh Borini

  •

Roger Bennett: Srktl is how he spells it in skater langue

  •

    [Comment from Michael GFOP]
There is one vowel in Skrtel Rog.

  •

James Tyler: Nasri's cross cleared by Skrtel. So far, so not-terrible for Liverpool.

  •

James Tyler: Kolarov's long-range blast is stopped smartly by Reina. EXHALE

  •

Roger Bennett: Reina did well to hang onto that

  •

James Tyler: Balotelli fouled by Skrtel under a high ball.

  •

Roger Bennett: Skrtl. Should have been booked for that. lucky gent.

  •

James Tyler: We've survived the first eight minutes. Except for Lucas, who has already been subbed off with what seemed to be a groin strain.

  •

James Tyler: Nah, Rog. He would just rather move to a club at which he doesn't have to play alongside Carl Jenkinson.

  •

James Tyler: In theory, he'll set the tempo. Control possession. Help keep midfield shape.

  •

    [Comment from Michael GFOP]
Can someone explain to me what Joe Allen's role is on this team?

  •

Roger Bennett: The psychological tests in Sahin's medical revealed that he likes money. Which is why he signed for Liverpool who offered more, rather than Arsenal

  •

James Tyler: Early run for Balotelli at Skrtel but the menacing Slovak tracks him and intercepts Mario's pass wide for Nasri.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassage]
Shelvey looked GREAT in preseason. JT corrected some ripping on Shelvey this summer. I'm now sold.

  •

James Tyler: I believe it was this weekend, Fox.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Shelvey drives and shoots on his own goal

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Has Sahin had his medical?

  •

James Tyler: Harsh, Rog. Shelvey's talented.

  •

Roger Bennett: Best part of Jonjo Shelvey's game is that he is bald

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
At least it's not that knee. #Lucas

  •

Roger Bennett: Devastating for Liverpool. and for Lucas who is a wonderful bloke.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR LIVERPOOL: Lucas off, Shelvey on.

  •

James Tyler: Maybe so, Rog, but Jonjo Shelvey is the second coming.

  •

Roger Bennett: Loss of Lucas a blow that cannot be over exaggerated for Liverpool. He is arguably the most irreplaceable player in Liverpool's lineup

  •

    [Comment from Michael GFOP]
Lucas is hurt. Horrible for Liverpool

  •

James Tyler: Not good to see Lucas hobbled. He's preparing to come off already but will try and run it off. Doesn't look good.

  •

James Tyler: Glen Johnson gets near goal, ball comes loose and Gerrard shoots again! It's wide. Again.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed does seem like City's in its 3-5-2. Though Kolarov and Zabaleta will do plenty of work up and down the flanks.

  •

James Tyler: John, I think I saw Neil Shipperley at those training sessions too.

  •

    [Comment from john]
Hey Charlie Adams worked out this Summer...with Micky Quinn

  •

James Tyler: Kudos to Gerrard for contributing the home side's first shot off-target of the day.

  •

James Tyler: A frantic first 90 seconds.

  •

    [Comment from Brandon]
Charlie's not fat, he's big boned!

  •

  •

    [Comment from Sven]
    Adam is well-fed. And sprint-adversive.

  •

James Tyler: And away we go!

  •

James Tyler: We shall see, Wes. Part of me believes the opposite: he'll finally get playing time and might want to show Real Madrid what they're missing.

  •

    [Comment from Wes]
I'm not too sure about Sahin. he didn't want to come to us to begin with. he only came coz we're paying more money than Arsenal. And Carlos, it is true.

  •

James Tyler: The teams stroll out.... don't they look lovely.

  •

Roger Bennett: Massive this for Coates. Sterling. Liverpool...

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    I believe in Rodgers.

  •

James Tyler: What can I say instead, Carlos?

  •

Roger Bennett: Carlos. It is true.

  •

    [Comment from Carlos]
James Tyler why are you calling Charlie Adam fat? you are a soccernet official you are not allowed to say those things

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, Mark, but he was just trying to be nice so the team bus doesn't get pushed over trying to get into the stadium.

  •

Roger Bennett: LFC. Fulham cannot afford to let him rot in the reserves. They will need to sell their asset. Will be close to the wire as they will seek to maximize the $. Hard to call where he will end up... not clear how much $ Liverpool have.

  •

    [Comment from Mark]
I want to pinch Mancini angrtily for calling Liverpool title-contenders. That's even more patronising than Fergie at his best.

  •

James Tyler: My half-baked analysis says that he'll end up stuck at Fulham. I hear whispers that if Moses does sign for Chelsea, Sturridge might be up for grabs. LFC would be interested in both Dempsey and Sturridge, but not both. Whichever is snared first -- this is the optimistic Reds fan talking here -- would leave the other out in the cold.

  •

Roger Bennett: Timo. Big question. So much chopping and changing of decisions on structure, youth development, director of football etc. They do keep putting money into the club, but their investment capacity is most definitely not infinite. Much rests on Rodgers. 4th manager in 4 seasons... stability, progress, direction needed NOW.

  •

    [Comment from LFC USA]
RB and JT, what are your thoughts on the Dempsey saga and how it will play out?

  •

James Tyler: THESE THINGS TAKE TIME, PETERG.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Rodgers remake of LFC is starting to remind me of AVB at Chelsea. Lot of square pegs for round holes. Fortunately for Rodgers, Gerrard isn't besties with the tabloids.

  •

James Tyler: Rog, think FSG trusted Dalglish to guide them a bit when they took over, not really understanding things yet. And so Kenny signs an overweight Scot with one memorable Prem season under his belt.

  •

    [Comment from Timo]
If Liverpool don't succeed this season, how long before the fans turn on Fenway Sports Group?

  •

James Tyler: FIVE MINUTES TO GAME TIME. Roughly. Not that I'm anxiously ticking off the seconds.

  •

Roger Bennett: Charlie Adam. Flavor of the month purchase. Very, very un-Liverpool player. A symbol of the erratic purchasing under Henry and Werner

  •

James Tyler: And yes, Charlie Adam is being kept in bubble-wrap for trips to Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup.

  •

Roger Bennett: Gerrard's game is very un-Rodgers. Going to be a long season for him. But this is the kind of game he scores in so...

  •

    James Tyler: Pictures!

  •

James Tyler: He's had a long and average summer, to be fair.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Do you think Gerrard is fatigued? He looked tired against WBA.

  •

James Tyler: Didn't say that, Mr. Guest.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
Don't like that comment JT.. Hoping players get injured..

  •

James Tyler: Very technical player. Gifted. Good passer. 23 years old. Was Bundesliga MVP two seasons ago. Not one to be sniffed at.

  •

    [Comment from liverpoolfan]
Why do Liverpool even need Sahin?

  •

James Tyler: (Checking to see when Chelsea visits Stoke City) (Hoping it's soon)

  •

Roger Bennett: There's Silva. to the left of Hart

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
Chelsea look pretty spectacular. Title winners if Hazard stays healthy and on this form

  •

James Tyler: Not sure. Might move Gerrard out of the middle. At least that's what I would do.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
@Sean_Fay it's a right of passage we all go through. Think I am up to ten now.

  •

    [Comment from Carlos]
Who do you think Sahin will replace in Liverpools Midfield?

  •

James Tyler: It's about now that I like to dip my McVities' Chocolate Digestive Biscuits in a heady blend of bleach and witch hazel before consuming.

  •

James Tyler: NINE MINUTES TO GAME TIME

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Zing!

  •

Roger Bennett: Brandon. hard to tell re Swansea. Like Everton, they are yet to play quality opponents...

  •

James Tyler: They are deceptively "for reals." Cupcake first two opponents but take nothing from their stylish evisceration of both.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
KC & The Sunshine Band's "Give It Up' playing on the Anfield PA. By coincidence, I belted that out on a karaoke machine last night.

  •

    [Comment from Brandon]
How "for reals" is Swansea? Scoreline aside, they've certainly passed the eye test in their first two matches.

  •

    James Tyler: Three points, John?

  •

    [Comment from John]
Rog Boddingtons, Wafers, Mario, Suarez. What more can you ask for on a Sunday?

  •

Roger Bennett: Tired legs. Euros appear to have done him in. Uncharacteristically sluggish against Southampton. Contract renegotiations probably don't help either. But the gent is top, top class.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Guest]
Why is Silva on the bench?

  •

    [Comment from Michael GFOP]
I think Sterling is the perfect player to support Suarez. He's quick, smart and lively just like Suarez himself. If he doesn't shy away from the moment, could mean big things for Liverpool

  •

James Tyler: I am numb, Rog. Because I am focused on live chat, work, and not using expletives should Pepe Reina have a 'mare.

  •

James Tyler: That said, games like these are tailor-made for my hero, Dirk Kuyt. Of course, his six-goal-in-five-game scoring streak is happening for Fenerbahce right now. But we remember his iconic strikes and might regret lacking his doughty presence today.

  •

Roger Bennett: JT. Are you nervous? Excited? Numb?

  •

James Tyler: 15 minutes to kickoff and so I'll begin my pre-game routine: cry for 5 minutes so tear ducts dry up, warm drink (half-tea, half-paint thinner), sing "Sussudio" and put the shirt on. Probably not too dissimilar to what actually happens in the Anfield dressing room.

  •

Roger Bennett: Mr. Bitters. You are right. I think we are in for a knife fight. Plenty of goals. But no blowout here. Much to my chagrin.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Bitters]
I would very surprised if Liverpool get a pasting. They always seem to bring their game up against the big sides.

  •

    [Comment from Juve fan]
Man City is going to make Liverpool look like school girls today.... Juve won but they really need a top striker..

LFC 2 CITY 1. Suarez, Sterling, Mario.

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
It's not going to be the Gunners. We have Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City coming up in the next 3 weeks, with South Hampton mixed in.

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, WHL10. Will be heartbreaking when the Gunners groom another star, only to see him leave in search of trophies.

  •

    [Comment from whl10]
carzola needs to play better to secure his future move to manchester

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Better question Brandon, who fires their manager first?

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
Hate to say it, City 3 - LFC 0.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Liverpool 3-2

  •

  •

Roger Bennett: Great question Brandon. I think the answer is... Wigan.

  •

James Tyler: Great question, Brandon. To the poll machine!

  •

    [Comment from Brandon]
Who pulls it together first: Liverpool, Arsenal, or Spurs?

  •

    [Comment from Ozzie John]
    Liverpool 2 Man City 1

  •

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Tevez speaks English? He learned it from the meat counter at Macclesfield Sainsbury's on the site of the old infirmary.

  •

  •

James Tyler: I'm a big fan of Coates too. Had an average time at the Olympics but he's progressing nicely.

  •

    [Comment from omar, fl]
coates is starting today i really like that move he is young and though and goes up very well in the air, does him starting surprise you.

  •

James Tyler: Arsenal is arguably as much as work in progress as Liverpool.

  •

    [Comment from whl10]
180 minutes into the we dont need him campaign and its a fire hot zero goals that woolwich have on show thus far! wowzers!!!

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
@MatthewStanger Well, we are both here to be shot at. Good luck. I have placed a small wager.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
On par with Best in Show.

  •

James Tyler: I don't think it'll be a rout. But then again, I am clinging to my Ian Rush blankie as I type.

  •

Roger Bennett: Shocking stuff. But easier on the eye for Liverpool fans than what we are about to watch...

  •

James Tyler: Morning, Rog. It will be the best verite mockumentary since the Blair Witch Project.

  •

James Tyler: I'm not worried about Suarez... yet. Was v. lively against WBA though missed a ton of shots. Think he just needs players that can help pull defenders out of position.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Warrior's motto is #wecomenottoplay? Surely it should be 'Warrior: Come Out to Play'? …r14s26---v16---nonxt8.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?…

  •

Roger Bennett: Wow. That Being Liverpool documentary is like a Waiting for Guffman spoof. Cannot wait to watch that beauty JT?

  •

    [Comment from omar, fl]
Mr suarez needs help upfront, who do you think gives him the better partnership that he needs, so maybe the pressure is taking a bit from him...

  •

    James Tyler: LINEUPS:
CITY: Hart, Zabaleta, Kolo Toure, Kompany, Kolarov, Milner, Yaya Toure, de Jong, Nasri, Tevez, Balotelli.
Subs: Pantillmon, Lescott, Savic, Rodwell, Razak, Silva, Dzeko.

LFC: Reina, Kelly, Johnson, Coates, Skrtel, Lucas, Allen, Gerrard, Borini, Suarez, Sterling.
Subs: Jones, Jose Enrique, Carroll, Henderson, Carragher, Shelvey, Downing.

  •

James Tyler: I'm sure Andy will get a chance in the second half. If we all remember, Andy did rather well for the Reds vs. City at Anfield in April, 2011.

  •

    [Comment from Aaron]
Would love to see Carroll battle company and toure today. Sterling , gerrard, and borini could provide plenty of service

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
I'll take the over PeterG, the rowe between them is pretty ugly and i don't see Dempsey backing down. It also doesn't seem like anyone is coming to sign him right now.

  •

James Tyler: Man City subs: Pantillmon, Lescott, Savic, Rodwell, Razak, Silva, Dzeko.

  •

James Tyler: LFC subs: Jones, Jose Enrique, Carroll, Henderson, Carragher, Shelvey, Downing.

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
My guess is is fear, he doesn't want to use him up the way he did Ramsey, and Wilshire before him.

  •

    [Comment from kingkenny]
@Dan, hes young and wenger is scared to risk him/start him

  •

James Tyler: Decent line, Peter. Even if he signs with LFC (or mends bridges at Fulham) within a few days, he'll need plenty of time to get up to peak match fitness.

  •

    [Comment from PeterG]
How about this for a prediction, over/under on how long till Dempsey plays his next game +/-12 days?

  •

James Tyler: Guessing he just doesn't like using him as a starter. Prefers him as a late-game change of pace. Personally, I don't get it. If he's in better form and playing well, why must he keep playing second fiddle to worse players?

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
I see Roberto Mancini has done a Glenda.

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
and one question for you James, why on earth does Wegner refuse to utilize OX?

  •

James Tyler: I am a huge fan of Sterling. Positive, full of pace, good on the ball. He's certainly doing more of late than, say, Downing.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Don't often do predictions. Today though, I feel like it. City to beat Liverpool 3-1.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Sterling is a blast to watch. Great against Hearts.

  •

    [Comment from Dan, NJ]
As an Arsenal supporter, my feelings are this. Walcott offers much more then Gervinho, at least Walcott has a finishing touch...sometimes...which is way more often the Gervinho

  •

James Tyler: Yes/no. He'll be lively, doesn't mind tracking back and honestly, it's a nice bit of psychology: if you work hard, you'll get chances to show your stuff. Given that City's fullbacks both like to surge upfield, it might create room for a speedster like Sterling to exploit.

  •

    [Comment from Mr. Bitters]
Is it a risk to start Sterling?

  •

James Tyler: Gervinho is like Walcott: tons of pace, no clue what to do with it. Watching them both sprint to the touchline and then mishit their crosses must have been frustrating to Gunners fans.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Gervinho shouldn't start. Weak link.

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
Arsenal looked much better than last week.

  •

James Tyler: That said, Geoff Cameron! What a rock in Stoke's midfield. And plenty of half-long throws.

  •

James Tyler: @Jonathan: I'd argue that the backline has never looked stronger. And we all knew that was the *real* problem.

  •

    [Comment from Jonathan]
So arsenal don't need rvp do they,,,,,,,

  •

    [Comment from John]
    Balotelli!

    LIVERPOOL!

  •

[Comment from Fox in the Box]
    Go Liverpool! Morning gents!

  •

James Tyler: And Raheem Sterling, 17, starts for the Reds.

  •

James Tyler: Stoke and Arsenal set the table with an utterly scintillating 0-0 draw, and now we get the entree: Liverpool hosting Manchester City at Anfield.

  •

    James Tyler: Football!
