    PCarrESPN: Adios!

  •

    James Tyler: Goodnight!

  •

James Tyler: See you tomorrow, 2:15pm ET for Champions League Boot Room action!

  •

James Tyler: Thanks for chiming in and making this more enjoyable than QPR did.

  •

    [Comment from prodnose via Twitter]
QPR now need to win all their remaining fixtures to stay up.

  •

James Tyler: INDEED, Vincent. You'll surely see it happen soon.

  •

    [Comment from Vincent]
If QPR want to get where they're aiming for, they need to get rid of Hughes. Great player, awful manager.

  •

James Tyler: In the interim, find us all on Twitter:
    @JamesTylerESPN
    @PCarrESPN
    @ESPNFC

And our absentee bartender this afternoon, @rogbennett

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
That was a good quality London derby in the best sense. Football should be fun, after all.

  •

James Tyler: Join us for Champions League bootrooms tomorrow and Wednesday, folks. And a Clasico effort on Sunday afternoon. And probably many more.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNPressPass via Twitter]
What does @ShakaHislop think of his former side, West Ham's win over QPR? Highlights and analysis on tonight's show

  •

James Tyler: Cheers, all, for slogging through this one with us. Not the greatest advert for the Prem, but it could have been worse. It could have been 0-0.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Not-so Sparky. Boos for Hughes. West Ham happy, and Andy Carroll is being regaled to the tune of Pigbag. Rangers in big trouble already.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNFC via Twitter]
FT. QPR 1-2 WEST HAM. The Hammers' first-half goals saw off ten-man QPR, who remain bottom of the Premier League

  •

James Tyler: FULL TIME: QPR 1, West Ham 2. Hammers move into the top seven. What a great-but-not-great-at-all game.

  •

PCarrESPN: With 2 points from 6 games, QPR is off to the worst league start in club history.

  •

James Tyler: Please, Clattenburg. End it.

  •

James Tyler: We're in the 97th minute.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Carroll thumps one from the edge of the box. Julio Cesar parries it back to the ponytailed brute, who wallops the rebound into the crowd.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Jussi Jaaskelainen's knee slide revived memories of Paul Young at Live Aid.

  •

James Tyler: Long ball is with Jaaskelainen. Not great.

  •

James Tyler: Carroll's offside and so QPR try to get on with it.

  •

James Tyler: Taarabt is demanding a foul having beaten one defender though he fell in front of the second under his own pace. Andy Carroll is then clouted in midfield. Free kick, West Ham.

  •

James Tyler: Two minutes of the extra six left. Jaaskelainen hoofs a goal kick in Carroll's general direction.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Just yer 11 bookings, then. Not the worst tempered match I have ever been to, either.

  •

James Tyler: Not sure on that, Wren, but Jonathan Wilson wrote a compelling piece for the Guardian a while ago on how much better teams seem to play with ten men. Something about use of space/manpower being more efficient.

  •

    [Comment from Wren]
Maybe QPR should play with 10 men more often. What's their goal differential with 10 men?

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: James Tomkins. A hilarious bit of reluctance to take a free-kick. Clattenburg had no choice.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! Faurlin with an elegant crack from 35 yards swerves through a crowd. Jaaskelainen does well to save it despite seeing it late.

  •

James Tyler: Can QPR find a late equalizer?

  •

James Tyler: Everything and nothing happening all at once.

  •

James Tyler: Been a curious game, this. Tons of action but none of it particularly good.

  •

James Tyler: Six -- six! -- minutes of injury time remaining. Well then.

  •

James Tyler: Not entirely sure. Not really convinced Spurs need him.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassages]
Kevin Noble kind of a Scott Parker lookalike with that hair. When does Parker come back?

  •

James Tyler: Under a minute of regular time remaining.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! Long ball finds Faurlin on the left, he volleys it across the edge of the box to Zamora who cleverly lays it off for Cisse to shoot. He eventually does, forcing a nervous save from Jaaskelainen. QPR can't reach the rebound. Scary stuff.

  •

James Tyler: Hammers defending extremely deep in the final minutes despite QPR not being *that* menacing.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick is eventually taken and calmly hooked clear. Three minutes left plus injury time.

  •

James Tyler: Now Clint Hill is having words, as is Clattenburg. Cynical nonsense, really.

  •

James Tyler: Ricardo Vaz Te is playacting again. Takes a theatric tumble while trying to prevent QPR taking a quick free-kick. Julio Cesar comes out a full 40 yards to try and get Vaz Te to his feet. He doesn't move. Hilarious.

  •

James Tyler: One of the better ones, definitely. A low bar given the likes of Webb/Dowd but still. Generally gets his calls right and doesn't inspire bile and anger in footy fans.

  •

PCarrESPN: He did the Olympic final between Mexico and Brazil, so there's that.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
How does Clattenburg rate as an official? Personally, I think he's terrific.

  •

James Tyler: Taarabt has played well since coming on. His sharp pass releases Hoilett to scurry upfield only his run is ended by Kevin Nolan's ankle-tap. Free kick to QPR, 35 yards out and central. Taarabt casually sidefoots it a mile over the bar.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR QPR: Nedum Onuoha off, Junior Hoilett on. The proverbial last throw of the dice.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Nolan gets free inside the box but his cross is too far for Carroll to reach.

  •

PCarrESPN: Two for Barton, two for Cisse.

  •

    [Comment from RD]
I guess a certain Djibril Cisse has something to do with that :)

  •

    [Comment from Bogey]
Statsie, how many of those can be attributed to Barton?

  •

James Tyler: Carroll does well to keep an overhit cross in play. He lays it back for Nolan, whose shot is blocked back to him. The follow-up is blocked as well.

  •

PCarrESPN: QPR shares the Premier League lead with 10 red cards over the last 3 seasons, despite not even being in PL in 2010-11.

  •

James Tyler: A rare spot of on-the-ground passing by West Ham in a bid to run this one out. 8 minutes left.

  •

James Tyler: One for his therapist, surely.

  •

    [Comment from Curious Guy]
How effective can Zamora be when he's scared of the ball?

  •

James Tyler: Writing was on the wall given his age/salary. Plus Inter had a new, younger/arguably better goalie already in tow. Don't feel too bad for him; he's getting a nice salary at Loftus Road, win lose or draw.

  •

    [Comment from Jack]
What happend to Julio Cesar Inter Milan threw him out and locked the door

  •

James Tyler: Nedum Onuoha then ruins a promising QPR attack by crossing/shooting wide of goal/anyone in a QPR shirt. Crowd groans.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Julio Cesar still can't afford to rest on his laurels after that save.

  •

James Tyler: Superb stop by Julio Cesar. Especially given that he'd already conceded two soft goals by his standards.

  •

James Tyler: Corner amounts to nothing, again.

  •

James Tyler: ... and Vaz Te cracks it on target forcing a superb save by Julio Cesar. Ball skids off his gloves and pings off the crossbar for another West Ham corner.

  •

James Tyler: Set piece half-cleared, Jarvis' follow-up cross is nodded out to Ricardo Vaz Te...

  •

James Tyler: More purposeful scampering down the left by Matt Jarvis ends in a dangerous cross into the box, one that's primed for Andy Carroll's forehead before Clint Hill nods it behind for a corner.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
RT @RichArrowsmith: Let's, go, Diakite, Up to the highest height

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
QPR still has hope because James Collins exists.

  •

James Tyler: Sorry, Diakite destroyed Guy Demel. You get the picture.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
As a City fan, I'd like to vouch for QPR's ability to score with ten men.

  •

James Tyler: 15 minutes left, QPR down a man AND a goal.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
    Diakite was daft. And rash.

  •

James Tyler: He wanted some mettle in midfield and got, instead, fool's gold.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Hughes brilliant to bring on Taarabt, but foolish to bring on Diakite. Already off.

  •

    [Comment from Vincent]
? Sacked in the morning, you're getting sacked in the morning ?

  •

James Tyler: RED CARD, QPR: Samba Diakite couldn't help himself. Eyes wide in pursuit of a 50/50 ball in midfield, he decimates Diame.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNFC via Twitter]
RED CARD: QPR down to ten men has Samba Diakité is sent off.

  •

PCarrESPN: Diakite: on in 56th, goal in 57th, yellow in 57th, red in 75th. Impressive.

  •

James Tyler: Not so much that, ROTD. They're just becoming fossils in "modern" football. The game is steadily finding less use for them given the evolution of tactics, positions, etc. That said, when the "big man" is on form, there's nothing like it.

  •

    [Comment from RunOfTheDill]
No love for the big men.

  •

James Tyler: Matt Jarvis, who's had a fine game, wins another corner for West Ham after a dart down the left ends in a blocked cross.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Can tell Andy Carroll now resides in East London. Rather than a ponytail, he now sports a near topknot of the type seen on Broadway Market.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR WEST HAM: Andy Carroll on, Carlton Cole off. Like for like in that it's one muscular/average striker replaced by another.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! Simple, brilliant stuff. Taarabt slides it down the left channel for Cisse behind the Hammers' right back. His shot is smartly saved by Jaaskelainen.

  •

PCarrESPN: 2nd West Ham appearance for Andy Carroll. Other was September 1. Maybe he only plays on the first of each month.

  •

James Tyler: Hammers free kick lofted in menacingly enough but Cole can't direct his header on target. QPR clears.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Big Andy time....I have a feeling Carlton may be vacating the scene.

  •

James Tyler: ANDY CARROLL WATCH: He's about to come on. Well, then.

  •

    PCarrESPN: I want one!

  •

James Tyler: You get a card, you get a card...

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: Kevin Nolan carded now. Clattenburg in no mood for shenanigans.

  •

James Tyler: Missed that while answering an email. Still, on replay Taarabt shows his Barton-esque streak.

  •

    [Comment from JamesHMartin via Twitter]
Would love to see Taarabt score the equalizer, shake Hughes' hand ... and head for the bus stop.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassages]
Taarabt!!! Step-over, step-over, forearm to the head!! Hilarious!

  •

    [Comment from lando]
Taarabt is fun to watch. Not sure I'd want him on my team but he is fun.

  •

James Tyler: Just over 20 minutes left in a pulsating, yet forgettable, contest.

  •

James Tyler: Up the other end, Carlton Cole devolves into the *old* Cole, wasting a glorious Nolan through-ball and firing comically wide of goal.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Now, that's the Carlton Cole we all know...

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: As John noted, Jaaskelainen's booked for perceived time-wasting following the save.

  •

James Tyler: What a save by Jaaskelainen! Better from QPR. Ball played into the top of the box by (I think) Taarabt, Cisse lays it off for Granero who jukes the defender and shoots from 15 yards... brilliant one-handed parry by the Hammers goalie to keep it out.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Jussi Jaaskelainen booked for his troubles after making an excellent save.

  •

    PCarrESPN: I believe it's Diarra.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassages]
Diakite - one of two players from Mali to have played in the EPL this year. The other?

  •

James Tyler: The scrappiness continues. Taarabt over-cooks a through-ball for Zamora that would have given Bobby a decent chance to equalize. Ball ends up with Jaaskelainen.

  •

James Tyler: Half-chance for QPR! Good cross down the right finds Zamora, and his flick-on is perfectly placed for Cisse to level... only he can't get to it.

  •

PCarrESPN: Mark Clattenburg had given out 3 yellows in 2 games this season...that's 5 today.

  •

James Tyler: Yes. Probably. Maybe both sides, on balance.

  •

    [Comment from Wren]
lets be honest: is the loser of this game going to get relegated?

  •

James Tyler: Andy Carroll's warming up. Not sure whether that means he's coming on or he's just keeping his muscles loose given the knife-edge this game is suddenly on.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Lovely cross by Jarvis that reaches Carlton Cole at the near post. He tries to backheel it through Ryan Nelsen but wins a corner.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Carlton Cole attempted a Danny Welbeck.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Eh...I'm afraid not.

  •

PCarrESPN: Diakite has 8 yellows and a red in 12 appearances for QPR.

  •

James Tyler: Well, Statsie? Do we keep such meticulous records?

  •

    [Comment from lando]
Ian Darke: "Two subs within a few minutes, both booked, one scored. Is that some kind of record?" Love Darke. Give him a knighthood, already.

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Adel Taarabt: the first non-Zamora to score for QPR in 2012-13. (via @PCarrESPN)

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Turning into a very good game indeed. Don't fancy Andy Carroll's chances of getting on. Sam will want to bring on a defensive player soon.

  •

PCarrESPN: And Taarabt is the first non-Zamora to score for QPR this season.

  •

James Tyler: "This is a t-shirt."

  •

    [Comment from InEconClass]
what did his bookable offense shirt say?

  •

James Tyler: Free kick, West Ham, 35 yards out. Nothing comes of it.

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, QPR: Samba Diakite also makes his presence felt, scything down Ricardo Vaz Te who was in mid-stride towards the QPR penalty area.

  •

PCarrESPN: Taarabt had 2 goals in 27 games last season...that's 1 in 2 games this year.

  •

    James Tyler: #GameOfTwoHalves

  •

    [Comment from Curious Guy]
    Cue: Funny old game, innit?

  •

James Tyler: Gets possession wide on the left, darts infield with little pressure from Diame and curls a sublime shot into the top corner from 25 yards. Jaaskelainen simply watched it breeze by. Glorious goal.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNFC via Twitter]
GOAL! QPR 1-2 WEST HAM. Sub Taarabt hits an absolute screamer and gets QPR back into the game

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
What a goal from Taarabt. Mark Hughes the tactical genius after those substitutions.

  •

James Tyler: And it's a lovely goal by Adel Taarabt, the man who single-handedly got Rangers back into the Prem (only to have an awful year last year).

  •

James Tyler: Out of nowhere, a lifeline.

  •

  •

James Tyler: GOAL, QPR! SOMETHING FROM NOTHING!

  •

James Tyler: Zamora has a cross in from the right, one that's well defended.

  •

James Tyler: Could be the case. There's no-one with an iota of Barton's contemptible fire. That might be useful.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
For all the baggage, does QPR miss Joey Barton?

  •

    PCarrESPN: Everyone with a hyphen...OUT.

  •

James Tyler: Both good calls as neither Park nor SWP did anything faintly worthwhile.

  •

James Tyler: SUBS FOR QPR: Samba Diakite and Adel Taarabt on, Ji-Sung Park and Shawn Wright-Phillips off.

  •

James Tyler: I'm sure he's raring to get involved with this. 55 minutes gone, QPR still attempting to locate its interest in salvaging a result.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
QPR set to bring on some subs. Mark Hughes is being singled out by fans now. Park Ji-Sung is not exactly flavour of the month either.

  •

James Tyler: Adel Taarabt sighting. He's doing some sprinting on the sideline.

  •

James Tyler: As I type that, he's whistled for an obvious (though subtle) nudge on the defender in order to reach a through-ball. Hilarious.

  •

James Tyler: Carlton Cole's having a good game, too. For once. Winning every header. Might be due to some generous refereeing from Mark Clattenburg, I can't quite decide.

  •

James Tyler: Mbia defends well to prevent Matt Jarvis getting free down the left flank.

  •

James Tyler: West Ham more than winning this bruising contest beyond the obvious scoreline. QPR second to every loose ball, losing every aerial battle. No confidence at the moment. Probably because many more pundit types like me are typing furiously at how bad they look this season.

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Thinking that Mark Hughes hasn't made a single substitution because the rules prevent him from swapping all 11.

  •

PCarrESPN: But West Ham isn't getting there...West Ham has completed 2 of 19 crosses.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
*Every* West Ham cross is getting through. Every last one of them.

  •

    [Comment from LDR]
West Ham goodness they smell blood right now.

  •

James Tyler: All started with -- you guessed it -- a long ball, one that Carlton Cole did well to flick on for Matt Jarvis. Stephane Mbia has been struggling to contain Cole.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! More soft defending for QPR gives Kevin Nolan and Mohamed Diame clean shots on goal. Nolan doesn't take his but Julio Cesar does well to parry Diame's fierce half-volley on the right side of the box.

  •

PCarrESPN: From Infostrada: Ricardo Vaz Te is the first West Ham player to score a Premier League goal on his birthday. The last player to do so for any club was Yossi Benayoun on May 5.

  •

James Tyler: Could have been 3-0 there.

  •

James Tyler: Close for West Ham! Tomkins' clever run off the ball allows him to reach the ball some 10 yards out but he misses his header entirely.

  •

    [Comment from AndrewG]
Aren't all Liverpool fans befuddled this season?

  •

James Tyler: Set piece reaches Tomkins at the back post but decent defending. Until Cisse concedes a corner on the other side.

  •

PCarrESPN: Much of the game was on the far side of the field (on TV) in the first half.

  •

    [Comment from depressed red]
    statsie left me befuddled

  •

James Tyler: Within seconds, George McCartney wins a corner as his left-flank cross is deflected out.

  •

James Tyler: We're off! West Ham restarts this one. No changes for QPR during the break.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Right then. Two teams are set to resume.

  •

PCarrESPN: 43% of West Ham's 1st-half touches have been on the left. 45% of QPR's have been on the right.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
I'm a City fan so I'd love the answer to be 'United' but it's QPR. Scholes is better than anyone QPR has and it's really not close. But, yeah, both are struggling mightily in the midfield.

  •

James Tyler: No, Paul. Nor figure out the passivity of Carrick, the rust of Darren Fletcher and the obesity of Anderson.

  •

PCarrESPN: Didn't really expect Man United to miss Park Ji-Sung, did we?

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
    united have defending crisis too

  •

    [Comment from nordy]
United behind their forwards look awful. They looked so bad against Tottenham

  •

    [Comment from AndrewG]
United only have one midfielder. If Scholes can't beat the opposition on his own, game over.

  •

James Tyler: Here's a fun question: whose midfield is more beleaguered right now... United or QPR?

  •

    [Comment from AndrewG]
Maybe QPR can stage a United-like comeback in the 2nd half - i.e. completely dominate West Ham but still lose 3-2

  •

James Tyler: We'll do them wherever possible, JW. Keep checking ESPNFC.com for the latest info on that front. Or on Twitter: @ESPNFC or @JamesTylerESPN.

  •

    [Comment from JW RCTID]
Is the Boot Room around for MLS games at all?

  •

James Tyler: QPR needs a clue in defense. Though really, the problem is midfield. Talented individuals but leadership (ahemHUGHESahem) isn't using them effectively. Can't win games if you're forever in aimless pursuit of the ball.

  •

    [Comment from Jawatoss]
Does QPR need Michael Dawson, i would lie him to stay at Spurs personally, if he is ok with a bit part role.

  •

James Tyler: I was kidding, Lando. I'll be watching. I watch 4-5 MLS games a weekend, schedule permitting. Do enjoy the league. Fan-wise, I support the Philly Union. Love what Hackworth is doing with a raw squad.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
I'm sensing that James is not an MLS fan. :)

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
This is Mark Hughes' penance for releasing Fabio da Silva from his Old Trafford borstal.

  •

PCarrESPN: Quite the weekend of rivalries...América-Chivas, AC Milan-Inter Milan, Barcelona-Real Madrid, Seattle-Portland

  •

    [Comment from lando]
Ian and Macca *blasting* the QPR defence right now. I love those guys. I'd listen to them broadcast a traffic jam.

  •

    PCarrESPN: *on ESPN*

  •

James Tyler: Yeah, that's *okay" I guess. (shrugs shoulders)

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassages]
Not sure if people here fall into that "only watch European football" category, but I HIGHLY recommend the Sounders/Timbers NW derby match on Sunday. Great atmosphere and rivalry there.

  •

James Tyler: James Tomkins: the pass completion SUPER SUB.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Tomkins 100% (8-8), Diame 92% (11-12), M'Bai 90% (17-19), Julio Cesar 83% (10-12), Cisse 80% (8-10).

  •

    [Comment from mike]
    who are the 5 players?

  •

James Tyler: We'll have a feature on Bentley in the next week or so. Follow us on Twitter -- @JamesTylerESPN, @PCarrESPN or @ESPNFC -- to see it when published.

  •

    [Comment from RunOfTheDill]
On another completely different note, How is David Bentley doing? His time as West Ham was another way for Tott to pull one over on us.

  •

James Tyler: Maybe some more in there also.

  •

James Tyler: Yes. Boot Rooms in full force tomorrow and Wednesday for Champions League fun. Also, a Clasico Boot Room on Sunday.

  •

    [Comment from TwistyMaze LittlePassages]
Are you guys around for ECL/Europa this week? I'm really looking forward to BVB coming to the Etihad

  •

James Tyler: Yes. By a mile.

  •

    [Comment from JC]
JT, more than you see Stoke fans cringe when Charlie Adam plays?

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
If Mark Hughes is not careful, he'll end up in Turkey with Roy Keane. A decent body of work is being slashed away by his time at QPR.

  •

James Tyler: Which five, Paul? Nolan?

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Pass completion pct in the first half: #QPR, 72%. #WestHam 67%. Nou Campian. (via @PCarrESPN)

  •

PCarrESPN: Only five players are completing passes above the league average rate of 79%.

  •

PCarrESPN: Halftime stats: QPR completed 152 passes at 72% clip. WHU 137 passes at 67%.

  •

James Tyler: Are we having fun yet? For some reason, I enjoy seeing Mark Hughes struggle at his job.

  •

  •

PCarrESPN: Among players with more than one goal, it's Steven Fletcher...5 goals in 357 minutes.

  •

James Tyler: No interest at all. At least not to my (considerable) knowledge.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
OT but is any EPL team interested in Wondolowski? Have you guys heard anything? I hate San Jose but he's had an incredible season.

  •

PCarrESPN: Technically, Man United's Nick Powell leads...1 goal in 23 minutes.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNFC via Twitter]
HT. QPR 0-2 WEST HAM. Some shocking defending and the Hammers are in full control at Loftus Road

  •

James Tyler: HT: QPR 0, West Ham 2. The home side gently booed off the field. A smattering of boos.

  •

James Tyler: Granero chips it aloofly to the back post -- looked like a set play for QPR -- but his intended target is a mile offside.

  •

James Tyler: Chance to cut the Hammers' lead in half on the verge of the interval?

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Carlton Cole has been excellent. The sight of a pony-tailed destroyer on the bench can do that to a man.

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: Kevin Nolan sullies his strong first half by chopping down Park Ji-Sung deep in West Ham territory.

  •

    PCarrESPN: On it...

As the early season has progressed, who has the best goals to minutes ratio?

  •

Just to confirm: QPR and Mark Hughes did start eleven professional soccer players vs. West Ham.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Pog with the answer.

  •

James Tyler: 49th minute. Shawn Wright-Phillips tries to wriggle way from a defender. He lofts it down the right flank. It goes out for a West Ham throw-in. C'est la vie.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Pablo Zabaleta, Man City.

  •

James Tyler: Days? More like seasons of his grimness.

  •

    [Comment from lando]
Folks, when you put your team in the hands of Mark Hughes, you're going to have days like this. And more than one, I might add.

  •

James Tyler: Bobby Zamora has a wide-open header around the penalty spot but can't put it on target. Should have at least troubled Jaaskelainen. As such, it pings off his forehead and into the crowd. Symbolizes QPR's first half, really. Good in theory.

  •

James Tyler: Ricardo Vaz Te's now feigning some kind of injury. Play on. A weird game, this. Sloppy and spirited and so much action despite so little happening.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
RT @Trop_briefly: Julio Cesar. Less than imperious.

  •

James Tyler: Such is the curious case of Djibril Cisse. Wasteful 60% of the time, liability 38% of the time, brilliant 2% of the time. (That adds up to 100, right?)

  •

    [Comment from Curious Guy]
Cisse deserves at least 1/3 of a goal for that little jump kick.

  •

    James Tyler: Comfortably ensconced.

breaks with speed - i guess andy is still on the bench?

  •

James Tyler: Delivery doesn't beat the first defender. Clearance drops nicely for Jarvis outside the box but he volleys well wide.

  •

James Tyler: West Ham breaks upfield with speed and wins a corner of their own.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Jussi > Julio Cesar. Funny old game.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! They're awake! Free kick is nodded as far as Cisse on the edge of the box. The Frenchman improvises a clever leaping volley that is palmed over by Jaaskelainen. Nothing comes from the corner.

  •

PCarrESPN: Ref Mark Clattenburg has sent off a QPR player in 2 of their last 3 games he has reffed.

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: Mohamed Diame in the book for a cynical take-down as QPR tried to break.

  •

James Tyler: Well played by Granero to cross for Cisse there. Only the Frenchman can't beat the defender and trouble Jaaskelainen.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
If you google "shambolic", you get a picture of QPR's defenders all lying around in the box on that play.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! Cisse inside the box shoots right at James Collins from close range. Rangers' first decent attack.

  •

PCarrESPN: 1st Premier League goal for Vaz Te since he scored thrice in four games for Bolton in 2006.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Just dreadful. Woeful. Shocking.

  •

PCarrESPN: Vaz Te scores on his 26th birthday!

  •

James Tyler: West Ham free kick begets West Ham corner. Swung in deep, QPR fails to clear, simple right-flank cross finds Ricardo Vaz Te at the back post and his volley beats the unsighted Julio Cesar from close range.

  •

    [Comment from ESPNFC via Twitter]
GOAL! QPR 0-2 WEST HAM. Vaz Te nets from close range... QPR's defence is faltering badly.

  •

James Tyler: An absolute shower of a shambles.

  •

  •

James Tyler: GOAL FOR WEST HAM!

  •

James Tyler: Big Sam forced to use two subs in the first half-hour or so.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR WEST HAM: Joey O'Brien off, George McCartney on.

  •

James Tyler: Granero and Park Ji-Sung have a word with Mark Clattenburg for the foul called against Kevin Nolan. The Hammers captain has been a one-man wrecking crew thus far.

  •

PCarrESPN: As Ian mentioned...totally forgot that Jarvis got an England cap...played 22 minutes in friendly vs Ghana in March 2011.

  •

James Tyler: They weren't great buys to begin with?

  •

    [Comment from Brain]
What happened to all of QPR's "great buys?"

  •

James Tyler: Cisse's anger level slowly rises a touch as he tussles in midfield for a loose ball only to be bundled over. No foul called. I suspect the Djibril Red Mist will descend midway through the second half, if not sooner.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Robert Green, notably, coming in for abuse from the Hammers fans, who are in full voice. Always good to be an away fan at Loftus Road.

  •

James Tyler: As John notes, Carlton Cole is a touch hobbled after a heavy challenge. Andy Carroll waits. Hopes.

  •

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Having Esteban Granero is definitely a coup for QPR; that they can't do anything with him, anything but.

  •

James Tyler: He'll be feeling even finer at not having to play the rest of this one. QPR a disheveled mess thus far.

  •

    PCarrESPN: *Looks around*...Nope.

  •

James Tyler: Winston Reid is fine, it seems.

  •

James Tyler: Dammit, Paul. Do you have any stats that don't involve Liverpool as the victims?

Nolan to score a brace before the end of the day...

  •

    James Tyler: Vintage Cisse, that.

  •

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
QPR seem completely foxed by the runs of Kevin Nolan. They must have seen what he does before, but no answer to his drifts into position.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Lovely run into the box by Kevin Nolan is followed by a superb Cruyff turn to shed the QPR defender. He then crosses it looking for Cole but it's cleared. Just about.

  •

James Tyler: Nedum Onuoha hooks the ball out on the left flank to curtail another Hammers "attack."

Winston Reid not sure who he is at the moment. Time to tell him he's Pele, then, to paraphrase Brian Clough.

  •

    James Tyler: EXACTLY.

  •

    PCarrESPN: Just like Liverpool.

  •

James Tyler: Yes, drop him immediately. And question yourself for ever having picked him up.

  •

    [Comment from RunOfTheDill]
Unrelated question, But should I drop Charlie Adams from my fantasy squad? I mean, I thought he would be putting some sweet crosses into Crouch but that article has me worried.

  •

James Tyler: Good inswinger from Granero this time and despite three QPR players marginally offside, Jussi Jaskelainen bounds off his line and collides heavily with Winston Reid, who's now receiving medical attention.

  •

James Tyler: And a West Ham defender seemingly out cold on the floor.

  •

    James Tyler: Almost an equalizer!

  •

James Tyler: Another Hammers foul, this time giving QPR a free-kick in dangerous territory on the edge of the box, wide right of goal. Granero to deliver ...

  •

PCarrESPN: QPR 75% passing...WHU 62%. League avg is 79% this season.

  •

James Tyler: I don't wish to disparage the game too much. All in good fun. Neither side will be remembered for their slick passing triangles or sumptuous on the ball skill. In some ways, that makes this more entertaining. Like watching a street fight outside a bar at last call.

  •

James Tyler: Decent cross from the right flank for West Ham. Julio Cesar collects with Cole lurking nearby.

  •

James Tyler: 17th minute and a steady stream of fouls. Neither side interested in "passing" or "accuracy" thus far.

  •

James Tyler: Did well at City, mind you, but I think many of us could thrive at the Etihad with that kind of budget. A bit like playing FIFA on easy setting.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Carlton Cole fouls Alejandro Faurlin in the QPR half.

  •

PCarrESPN: All these stats, and we don't track daisy-cutters...

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR: Cisse's left unmarked in the West Ham half and given room to shoot, but it's a daisy-cutter. Easily saved.

  •

    James Tyler: 12th-15th.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan M]
Hey James Tyler, predictions for West Ham's finish in the league?

  •

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Being Liverpool is sort of ridiculous, but it has made me feel really, REALLY bad for Lucas Leiva. Seems like a really good guy.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for QPR! Granero starts and ends a move in midfield, finding SWP wide right and continuing his run for the return pass, only his first-time shot is well off-target.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
RT @Pundamentalism: @prodnose Q.P.R actually stands for 'Quite Possibly Relegated'.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Diame jogs through the QPR half with little intervention, shoots from 25 yards and it's deflected narrowly wide. Hammers corner.

  •

James Tyler: If you've been watching the future Emmy-winning Being: Liverpool, you'll see that Rodgers enjoys to put an arm on a shoulder during training. A real mentor.

  •

    [Comment from DaveNZ]
    Brenden Rodgers treatment?

  •

James Tyler: QPR with another free kick. Clint Hill biffs it in from distance but cleared with ease. Home side yet to settle much on the ball.

  •

PCarrESPN: 5 of West Ham's 6 goals this season have been in the opening 40 minutes. The other was in the 92nd.

  •

James Tyler: So far, Ryan, you're right.

  •

    [Comment from Ryan M]
Whether we are at Loftus Road or down at Upton Park, West Ham shall always win the day!

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Kevin Nolan was giving Ryan Nelsen the Brendan Rodgers treatment there. Very touchy-feely.

  •

James Tyler: Granero bends the corner to the near post where it's cleared. Vaz Te has a run down the right, glides infield and passes for Nolan but the West Ham captain fouls trying to get the ball. Alas.

  •

James Tyler: First real excitement for the QPR crowd as Shaun Wright-Phillips whips a decent cross in from the right. It's shinned out for a corner.

  •

James Tyler: Nolan's long ball for Carlton Cole skips out for a goal kick. Just a bit too much spice on the pass.

  •

    [Comment from JohnBrewinESPN via Twitter]
Jarvis goal a variation on a theme - headed in at the far post after a Kev Nolan contribution. QPR defensively bereft.

  •

  •

James Tyler: An absolute comedy of a start for QPR's backline.

  •

James Tyler: DISMAL DEFENDING. Vaz Te get behind the right back, skips a tackle, crosses from the right touchline. It's cleared to Nolan whose sliced shot loops high to the far post, where Jarvis calmly nods in past a confused/frightened Julio Cesar.

  •

PCarrESPN: Four goals in his last four Premier League starts for Matt Jarvis.

QPR: Julio Cesar, Hill, Nelsen, Mbia, Onuoha, Wright-Phillips, Granero, Faurlin, Park, Zamora, Cisse.
Subs: Green, Diakite, Taarabt, Mackie, Ephraim, Hoilett, Ehmer.

  •

James Tyler: Right, then. The big game. QPR and West Ham, a mild London derby. And we've had some good Monday Prem games so far this season: Everton-Newcastle was a rip-snorter.

  •

James Tyler: Not sure, Pog. Hughton seems to favor a flatter midfield with Howson/Johnson in the middle.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Random Norwich question: what's going on with Hoolahan? I thought he was a pretty big part of last year's team, but he's not getting off the bench this year.

  •

James Tyler: A cap would never work, would never happen. Not even worth mulling over, really. FFP, as I see it, is designed to look scarier than it is. But the moment that UEFA is forced to kneecap one of its big clubs -- and thus chop out its own profits from things like the Champions League -- it will find a way to not punish anyone too heavily. I think the biggest, most free-spending clubs already know this.

With mui transfer talk on the horizon in the coming months, what are your thoughts on financial fair play, or a transfer/wage cap?

  •

James Tyler: I try to take as little joy from the misfortunes of others, Ian. Except if those misfortunes reside at Old Trafford. Suarez, all the way. Though Norwich helped greatly in giving him so much space.

  •

    [Comment from Ian (LFC)]
Are you happier about Suarez's brilliant hat trick + silver-platter-assist or Carroll's imminent no-match-fitness-lumbering-around-even-slower-than-usual performance?

  •

James Tyler: 50/50 shot. Not convinced given that even he will demand something "bigger" in due course. Heads always get turned, and his will be no different. Eventually.

Agreed with the Everton as the surprise, will Fellaini stay?

  •

James Tyler: Another good 'un: West Brom. It won't last, but who cares?

  •

James Tyler: Everton. They don't normally wake up until January at the earliest. Though it pains me greatly given the turmoil on my side of Stanley Park, the Toffees' ability to play well on a budget is to be admired. David Moyes might be a genius.

  •

    [Comment from Seth]
On a more happy subject, who has been the biggest surprise??

James Tyler: Ensemble casts only work if they're given plenty of time to gel. This lot at Loftus Road looks like a bunch of castaways marooned on some deserted island and forced to learn zonal defending in a 4-4-2.

I think Gareth's point is that QPR made so many transfer moves, some people liked them to improve significantly. Instead, they've looked lousy, though injury-ridden. But Norwich just keeps getting blown out.

  •

James Tyler: Norwich, by contrast, kept its core of players. All the people that made the Canaries special last season -- minus that sleeves-rolled-up Scot on the sideline, of course -- were retained.

  •

James Tyler: Yeah, but I think the way they spent it -- Fabio da Silva? Julio Cesar? -- makes people hesitant to anoint QPR as being on any kind of upward trajectory. So far, they're exploiting undervalued players from better clubs. Scraps from the dinner table. Yet the lack of coherence that comes with several summers of refreshing the entire first-team squad is to be expected, surely.

    [Comment from Mike]
I agree with Gareth QPR spent alot of money

  •

James Tyler: Really, Gareth? QPR finished within a whisker of the drop last season while the Canaries impressed many Prem pundits. Granted, that was under Lambert, but I don't think even the most diehard Canaries would have anticipated such a drop-off.

  •

    [Comment from Gareth]
Not to preempt James, Alex, but I'd go with QPR because expectations will have been much higher than Norwich.

  •

James Tyler: Me too, painful as it is to say, Alex. Going from Paul Lambert to Chris Hughton is like going from Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy to Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin. THE BATSUIT HAD NIPPLES!

Special gift for QPR fans - and indeed those of West Ham - free 3D glasses with the programme. Just like 1984 all over again.

    [Comment from Alex]
Who's had a more disappointing sophomore season: QPR or Norwich? I'm leaning toward Norwich.

  •

James Tyler: Another fun stat that might presage the final score: West Ham's dismal form against QPR. 2-7-5 in the last 14 meetings across all competitions.

  •

James Tyler: Not sure about Andy Carroll, but Kevin Nolan's reprising his Hammers' savior role from last year. As goes Nolan, so goes West Ham.

  •

    [Comment from King]
Nolan and Carroll both put in goals, West Ham 2, QPR 0

  •

James Tyler: I think he's due for a red card. Been far too long since his last, really.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
I see Cisse is the starting XI, so it begs the question of what is more likely: A Cisse goal or a Cisse red card?

  •

  •

  •

James Tyler: The latter. By a country mile.

  •

    [Comment from Alex]
More impressive: Suarez's 2nd hat trick at Carrow Road, or Tottenham getting three points at Old Trafford for the first time in 2+ decades?

  •

James Tyler: That seems unfair if anything, Pog.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
To be fair, QPR has not really scored much at all.

  •

    James Tyler: LINEUPS:
West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, Reid, Collins, O'Brien, Noble, Diame, Vaz Te, Nolan, Jarvis, Cole.
Subs: Henderson, McCartney, Tomkins, Carroll, Maiga, Benayoun, O'Neil.

QPR: Julio Cesar, Hill, Nelsen, Mbia, Onuoha, Wright-Phillips, Granero, Faurlin, Park, Zamora, Cisse.
Subs: Green, Diakite, Taarabt, Mackie, Ephraim, Hoilett, Ehmer.

  •

James Tyler: They're the only teams in the Prem yet to do that, for the record.

  •

James Tyler: I'm not so sure, Jawa. After all, a weird quirk in this one is that QPR has yet to score on the road and West Ham has yet to score away from home.

  •

Good afternoon/evening. I am backing QPR to successfully attack West Ham today 2-0

  •

James Tyler: Indeed, Pog. Super happy.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Ahoy, JT. I trust Luis Suarez's exploits have put you in a cheerful mood?
