Jeff Carlisle: Hey everyone. Thanks for joining us tonight despite all of the hiccups in the beginning. We'll see you on Friday for the quarterfinals. Good night!
Jeff Carlisle: Looked like Costa took a swipe at Capdevila, but it wasn't much honestly. A harsh red in my book.
Jeff Bradley: Good Night! Time to write!
[Comment from JEFF]
WHAT WAS THE RED CARD FOR
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal could muster little in attack, and not just tonight. They were shut out in three of their four games.
Jeff Carlisle: Agreed. On another night, he would have been Man of the Match.
Jeff Bradley: Eduardo in tears. He could not have played better
Jeff Carlisle: Any final words, Jeff?
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal fought bravely, but Spain's possession game was just too much.
Jeff Carlisle: Spain wins, 1-0, and will meet Paraguay in the quarterfinals.
ESPN Stats and Info: There have been 13 red cards now in this tournament. As for the record, there were an astounding 28 red cards in 2006.
Jeff Carlisle: FULL TIME!
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal with a barrage of crosses, but Puyol clears it.
Jeff Carlisle: Less than a minute left.
Jeff Carlisle: Xabi Alonso coming off for Carlos Marchena.
Jeff Bradley: Capdevila and Bruno Alves have words at close range
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal on the break, but Capdevila breaks up the play.
ESPN Stats and Info: Taking a look...
[Comment from va intern]
Stats, how many red cards is that this world cup? what is the record?
Jeff Carlisle: Three minutes.
Jeff Carlisle: We are in to added time.
Jeff Bradley: Very dodgy red card
Jeff Carlisle: Capedevila is claiming he got knocked upside the head, but it didn't look like much to me.
Jeff Bradley: An elbow to Capdevila...sketchy
Jeff Carlisle: Ricardo Costa is sent off for what looked to be...I'm not sure.
Jeff Bradley: Ricardo Costa sent off
Jeff Carlisle: RED CARD!
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal with a rare look at goal but a shot from the top of the box is blocked.
Jeff Bradley: Portugal finally showing some life
Jeff Carlisle: Villa coming off for Pedro.
Jeff Bradley: That scoring play was BARELY onside
Jeff Carlisle: Llorente's header is just wide of goal.
Jeff Carlisle: Villa or Xavi. Can't decide. It was Xavi who really unlocked Portugal's defense with that backheel.
Jeff Bradley: This Jeff is going with the goal scorer, David Villa
[Comment from Ryan]
Jeffs - Who would be your pick for man of the match?
Jeff Carlisle: Coentrao misfires from the wing, and sends his attempted cross over the bar.
Jeff Bradley: If Spain holds on here, you have to believe this game will be a great prep for their next match with Paraguay. Probably a team that will play the same way as Portugal
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal with a rare spell of possesion in Spain's half, but can't do much with it.
Jeff Bradley: This possession is insane
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal is chasing shadows while Spain is sucking the oxygen right out of this game.
[Comment from Feeling Ignored]
Stats. what is the longest Shotless streak in this World Cup?
ESPN Stats and Info: In fact, Portugal has not registered a single shot in the second half either.
Jeff Bradley: OIe, Ole, Ole
Jeff Bradley: Very poised
Jeff Bradley: Beautiful play by Spain to control the pace
ESPN Stats and Info: Portugal has yet to register a shot on goal in the second half.
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal were starting to press further up field, but Spain has been making them chase so much I think they don't have the legs to do it.
ESPN Stats and Info: Portugal has scored only one equalizer in its World Cup history (Eusebio vs. North Korea, 1966).
Jeff Bradley: At some point, Portugal is going to have to change their tactics. They need a goal
Jeff Bradley: Eduardo has given Portugal a life line
Jeff Carlisle: Eduardo has kept Portugal in this match in a huge way.
Jeff Carlisle: Villa with a bomb that Eduardo parries away!
Jeff Carlisle: 15 minutes to go. Spain up 1-0.
Jeff Carlisle: Puyol with a vital challenge on Coentrao as he neared the box. Perfectly timed.
ESPN Stats and Info: That was the first yellow card to Spain in this tournament (Xabi Alonso).
Jeff Carlisle: Yellow to Xabi Alonso for taking down Pedro Mendes.
ESPN Stats and Info: Vincent Enyeama of Nigeria and Ri Myong-Guk of North Korea each have 21 saves in the tournament, tied for the lead.
Jeff Carlisle: Liedson has also come on for Simao.
Jeff Carlisle: Pedro Mendes comes on for Pepe.
Jeff Carlisle: It misses everyone and goes out for a throw-in.
ESPN Stats and Info: Should Spain win, seven of the eight group winners will be in the quarterfinals, the highest total in the four World Cups under the current format. Only Ghana was a runner-up.
[Comment from Dan]
Stats - what keeper has the most saves of the tournament
Jeff Carlisle: Villa forces another corner.
ESPN Stats and Info: The two losses: Brazil lost to Norway in 1998, and Czechoslovakia lost to Italy in the 1934 Final.
Jeff Bradley: That might be the save of the tournament
Jeff Carlisle: Ramos almost makes it two! His shot is touched around the post by Eduardo.
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal preparing to brin gon a sub it looks like.
ESPN Stats and Info: When the first goal of the match is scored after the 61st minute, the team scoring that goal is 82-2-8 in the World Cup all-time (including extra-time).
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal pressing higher up the field now.
Jeff Carlisle: Tough to see a way back for Portugal now. It's going to take a moment of brilliance from Ronaldo, and he's just not getting enough of the ball.
Jeff Carlisle: Llorente had to change jerseys after Carvalho ripped it.
Jeff Carlisle: That's a good question, Yaz. I don't think Spain can afford to wait until Torres finds his form.
Jeff Carlisle: I would also add, Llorente has been a handful since coming on, holding the ball up well.
Jeff Bradley: Now we get to see if Portugal can score on anyone but North Korea
[Comment from Yaz]
If Spain goes through, should Torres be benched?
Jeff Carlisle: Xavi's corner is punched away and then cleared.
Jeff Bradley: You could sense that the two chances before the goal shook Portugal's confidence
Jeff Carlisle: Spain are feeling it now. Villa forces a corner.
ESPN Stats and Info: Portugal is 1-7-0 when conceding the opening goal, while Spain is 18-4-4 when drawing first blood.
Jeff Carlisle: Xavi with a gorgeous backheel released Villa. Eduardo stopped his initial shot, but Villa roofed home the rebound.
Jeff Bradley: Sweet backheel pass by Xavi
Jeff Carlisle: David Villa after a slick build-up. Spanish fans going crazy!
Jeff Carlisle: GOAL!
Jeff Bradley: And there you have it
[Comment from Joe]
What's the longest time between goals in a World Cup?
Jeff Bradley: Spain need to keep pushing now. They have Portugal a bit nervous
Jeff Carlisle: Llorente's header was right at Eduardo, but credit the keeper with some sharp reflexes.
Jeff Carlisle: Villa with another great chance just wide. Eduardo was at full stretch.
ESPN Stats and Info: Should it end as such, this would be only the second game of the tournament without a booking (North Korea-Ivory Coast ).
Jeff Carlisle: Wow that was close!! Ramos with a pinpoint cross to LLorente, whose header forces a fine save from Eduardo.
ESPN Stats and Info: Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina) and Robert Vittek (Slovakia) each have four goals in the tournament, tied for the lead. Six players have three goals, including the United States' Landon Donovan.
Jeff Carlisle: Spain with a sub as well. Torres off for Llorente. I have to say, Torres was disappointing. Again.
Jeff Carlisle: Danny coming on for Almeida, who I thought put in a lot of hard work up top.
[Comment from Josh]
Stats- Who is the leading goal scorer in the World Cup this year?
Jeff Carlisle: Meireles with a dangerous cross but Casillas punches clear.
Jeff Carlisle: Meireles with a high tackle on Ramos. Meireles tries to shake Ramos' hand and wants nothing of it.
ESPN Stats and Info: Argentina's Lionel Messi has 13 shots on goal in the tournament, three ahead of Asamoah Gyan of Ghana (10).
Jeff Carlisle: I meant defending third, sorry.
Jeff Bradley: Portugal gets two and three players around the ball defensively. It's going to take a special play to break them down
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal really clamping down in the attacking third, blocking shots and crosses.
[Comment from random fan]
STATSIE: which player has the most shots (on goal) in this tournament so far?
ESPN Stats and Info: Every Spanish player (except Torres) has more touches than Cristiano Ronaldo right now.
Jeff Carlisle: Corner kick for Portugal headed clear.
Jeff Bradley: Great burst of speed there by Hugo Almeida
Jeff Carlisle: OOOH! That was close. Almeida carried the ball deep into the box, his cross deflected off Puyol and went just wide.
Jeff Carlisle: And just like that Ramos with a deft chip into the box that his headed clear.
Jeff Carlisle: Not much happening here. Spain passing amongst themselves, Portugal content to sit back.
ESPN Stats and Info: Believe it or not, Japan (27-46, 58.7%) has the best percentage of shots on goal to total shots in the tournament.
Jeff Carlisle: That depends on how many times Ronaldo touches the ball.
[Comment from yellow card]
When will i be shown??
ESPN Stats and Info: Taking a look, Josh...
Jeff Carlisle: Coentrao stops Torres in his tracks.
[Comment from Josh]
Stats-What team has been the most accurate? e.g. The best shots on goal to shots taken?
[Comment from Mike]
I think Spain is worried about counter-attack
Jeff Bradley: Spain came out flying and took three good shots in the first 7 minutes. Not much since
Jeff Carlisle: And we're off.
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal should be more disappointed. Outside of Villa's early chance, Portugal had the better opportunities.
Jeff Carlisle: I'd say leaning towards the sloppy side, especially with regard to Spain, but Portugal have been very good defensively.
[Comment from Tim]
Who should be more disappointed in the score right now? Spain or Portugal?
[Comment from Robert]
Jeff, would you say this is a well-played match so far, or more sloppy?
Jeff Carlisle: Players are coming back out.
ESPN Stats and Info: That's a great question, Weirdo. If I knew, I'd certainly do my best at helping others like you.
Jeff Carlisle: Oh. Okay. *sniff*.
[Comment from Richard]
I meant Jeff Bradley!
[Comment from Weirdo]
In my head Leander always has a Jamaican accent. Stats, why is that?
Jeff Carlisle: That's a good shout there TMFW. That or the Ostrich steak he had a couple of days ago.
ESPN Stats and Info: Every matchday at the World Cup has featured at least one goal since the 1994 Final (Brazil 0-0 Italy, Brazil wins 3-2 on PK).
[Comment from Too many Fried Worms??]
Was it the fried worms that did Leander in??
Jeff Carlisle: Thanks for the kind words there Richard. We're doing our best.
[Comment from Richard]
We've got Jeff!! We're good to go!! Even though we miss Leander.
Jeff Carlisle: He was, but has come down with a fever, or so I'm told. Get well Leander! You stole all the goals!
ESPN Stats and Info: We are currently working on a 196-minute scoreless drought at the World Cup. The last goal was scored by Robinho in the 59th minute of yesterday afternoon's Brazil-Chile game.
[Comment from Dave]
Wasn't Leander supposed to be with us today?
[Comment from vin]
ESPN Stats - How many Goal Kicks have been taken during the world cup?
[Comment from Daniel]
Is stats named Jeff also.
Jeff Carlisle: I like Spain to win on Pk's. They've had some positive recent history in shootouts, beating Italy on pens at Euro 2008.
Jeff Bradley: Jeff Carlisle appreciates the beauty of the goalless draw
Jeff Carlisle: It's Leander's Curse, I"m telling you.
[Comment from Todd]
Back to back 0-0 games. You lucky guy, Jeff
[Comment from Richard]
Who would win if this match went to PK's Jeff?
Jeff Carlisle: Not huge considering that Portugal is ranked 3rd in the world, just behind Spain. But given Spain's form over the last two years, an upset nontheless.
ESPN Stats and Info: At the risk of getting ahead of ourselves, Spain is 1-2 all-time in World Cup shootouts, while Portugal is 1-0 (besting England in 2006).
Jeff Carlisle: Someone asked who looked better, Ronaldo or Torres. Ronaldo is definitely looking better. He's been dangerous in transition, and had a dangerous free kick. Torres still doesn't look himself, struggling with his touch.
[Comment from Timothy]
Jeff van Carlisle, how big of an upset would it be if Portugal won this one?
Jeff Carlisle: I will pass along your kind words there Bob.
Jeff Bradley: Homer Simpson: "I'll kill myself if Portugal doesn't win"
[Comment from Bob]
Jeff, could you please tell Leander that I miss him?
Jeff Carlisle: Hope you get paroled soon, Office Prisoner. I think it will be 0-0 and go into extra time.
Jeff Carlisle: Per usual, Spain owned the ball, but Portugal definitely has found a formula that could get them the win.
[Comment from Office Prisoner]
What's your prediction for the 2nd half?
ESPN Stats and Info: Spain still has not received a booking in this tournament. They were the first team since Hungary in 1986 not to receive a single card in the group stage.
Jeff Bradley: This Jeff thinks Portugal has a chance. They do not give up goals.
Jeff Carlisle: On the basis of that half, I'd say they do some girl. They have looked dangerous on the counter, and Casillas has had to come up with some big saves. He hasn't always been clean with his handling, but he's done enough to keep his goal clean.
[Comment from some girl]
Jeff, do you think Portugal has a chance?
Jeff Carlisle: And that's half-time.
Jeff Carlisle: Carvalho does well to muscle Torres off the ball after he was nearly put through by Xavi.
Jeff Carlisle: But it doesn't look like it's affecting things.
Jeff Carlisle: Tough to tell how the weather is affecting things from my seat in the press center in Pretoria.
ESPN Stats and Info: When scoreless at the half, Portugal is 2-3-3 in World Cup play.
Jeff Carlisle: Portugal stepping it up. Casillas has to come out and clear a through ball intended for Simao, and then a Coentrao cross is headed wide by Tiago.
[Comment from Office worker]
Jeff...is the weather affecting game play yet?
Jeff Carlisle: I'd say Spain look a little out of sync, but Portugal are doing a good job of harrassing them.
[Comment from Myles]
Jeff, does Spain look a little sloppy out there right now?
Jeff Carlisle: Make that Meireles.
[Comment from David]
Well played, Stats. Well played indeed.
Jeff Carlisle: So close! A poor ball by Xabi Alonso to Mireles started a counter, that ended with Almeida just missing Mireles' cross.
ESPN Stats and Info: Frank, I'm still searching for info on unicorns and Jays, I'll get back to you.
[Comment from Frank G]
Stats, when Leander is home sick, what is Spain's record?
Jeff Carlisle: Xabi Alonso with a fierce drive that is blocked by the defense.
[Comment from Unicorn]
Stats, what is the life span of a Jay?
ESPN Stats and Info: When scoreless at the half, Spain is 3-10-6 in the World Cup all-time.
[Comment from Jay]
Stats, what is the life span of a unicorn?
[Comment from David]
Stats, what's Spain's record when 0-0 at halftime?
Jeff Carlisle: Ronaldo looked to be obstructed on that last play, but is getting little love from the referee right now.
Jeff Bradley: After a fiery start, this game has slowed down noticeably
Jeff Carlisle: Spain just knocking it about in midfield at the moment.
ESPN Stats and Info: Possession right now is 59-41, Spain.
Jeff Carlisle: And for those of you wondering where are intrepid reporter Leander is, I'm told he is feeling under the weather. We will do our best to fill in for him.
[Comment from kidnapped by boss]
ESPN Stats, how's possession?
[Comment from alex]
welcome back!
Jeff Carlisle: Okay folks. We're back. We apologize profulsely for the technical difficulties you've experienced.
Paul Grant: OK, we're back and better than ever. Sorry for the delay and thanks for your patience. Let's do this thing.
