  •

James Tyler: Many thanks for making this as fun as it is.

  •

James Tyler: Right then. Off! Boot Room, shuttered until Saturday. West Ham-Chelsea in the AM and then MLS Cup in the afternoon. Marvelous.

  •

James Tyler: Sorry, comments not appearing in order.

  •

James Tyler: Bayern to win 2-1. Dortmund a real mixed bag in the league this season while FC Hollywood has been a freight train of ruthlessness.

  •

James Tyler: Southampton - 12 pts
    Reading - 9 pts
    QPR - 5 pts

  •

James Tyler: Oh, wait: your bottom three.

  •

James Tyler: The rest doesn't really matter.

    James Tyler: 1. United

  •

    James Tyler: THE PREM TABLE:

  •

James Tyler: Thank you all immensely for spending Wednesday afternoon here.

  •

James Tyler: Fiorentina up 2-0 on Juve Stabia in the Coppa Italia. So there's that.

  •

James Tyler: Barca up 3-1 with 20 to play.

  •

    [Comment from Greg]
    wats up with barca game?

  •

    James Tyler: You're welcome, Jake.

  •

    [Comment from Jake Nazar]
JT thanks for keeping me entertained while I watched whatever the heck Chelsea was doing. See you on Saturday. Keep the Blue flag flying high.

  •

James Tyler: No. I've changed my mind.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Aren't we supposed to talk about children vomiting now?

  •

James Tyler: You're so welcome, Paul. Thank you for wiling away your life in the Boot Room.

  •

    [Comment from Zeus]
The Pianist and Requiem of a Dream for depressing movies

  •

Struggling to verify this "Torres hasn't scored for 10 hours" stat. I make it 579 minutes in the Premier League. #cfc

  •

James Tyler: Well then. Just Wigan-Man City yet to conclude. City up 2-0 meaning the table will largely stay as it is for the top 2: United one point ahead of Mancini and co.

  •

    [Comment from Paul]
Thanks, JT. Another two hours of our lives we'll never get back.

  •

James Tyler: FT: Man United 1, West Ham 0. A bizarrely tepid game, this one. But a win. And holding top spot in the Prem is never something to sniff at.

  •

James Tyler: I'm sure we could do a decent job. Torres in goal. Cech in CDM. False nines, tens and elevens.

  •

PCarrESPN: Man United has won eight straight league games vs West Ham.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
RAFA OUT! Let the Boot Room manage Chelsea! Long Live the Boot

  •

James Tyler: A more sensible answer.

  •

    [Comment from LFCGuest]
Because Carroll can't play BR style football

  •

James Tyler: Wow. Evra's shoddy back pass almost lets West Ham in. Jonny Evans nervelessly tidies up.

  •

James Tyler: Would just make everyone laugh at them more.

  •

    [Comment from Wren]
Why doesn't Liverpool recall Andy Carroll?

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Nolan has a chance to score but Smalling blocks his shot from 15 yards.

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
@tomkingham @OptaJoe Hmm. Not really the same.

  •

    James Tyler: I wish, Harry.

  •

    [Comment from Harry]
liverpool should move for tevez or falcao JT?

  •

PCarrESPN: I'm heading out to L.A. for MLS Cup...won't be waking up at 4:30 for West Ham-Chelsea.

  •

James Tyler: Into the three minutes of added time. Fergie wanted less as United is winning, but there you go. #OldJokes

  •

James Tyler: Then, MLS Cup, Saturday, beginning at 4pm I think.

  •

James Tyler: West Ham v. Chelsea, 7.30am ET, SATURDAY

  •

James Tyler: So, BOOT ROOM ALERTS...

  •

James Tyler: Ashley Young, who's been dire since coming on, thumps it to the near post for Carrick. It's nothing special.

  •

PCarrESPN: Fox and the Hound was sad too.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
Bambi is my choice for depressing movies.

  •

James Tyler: Yeah, that movie made me question existence.

  •

    [Comment from Peder]
Depressing Movies? Dancer in the Dark. No Question.

  •

James Tyler: Hey, all emotion is legit. Don't minimize their malaise.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
An Arsenal fan and a Chelsea fan complain to a Liverpool fan about how hard it is to support their clubs. Comedy.

  •

James Tyler: The Salton Sea? The Sweet Hereafter? Now THAT was depressing. Trees Lounge?

  •

James Tyler: United counter is ruined as the wide ball to Welbeck is overhit. He's forced to check back infield, allowing West Ham's defense to recoup.

  •

PCarrESPN: I'd go with The Sea Inside.

  •

    [Comment from Brandon]
If I were to pick reference points for depressing movies, you'd have to go with The Road.

  •

James Tyler: Smalling nervously thumps a harmless ball out for a Hammers throw.

  •

    James Tyler: Daaavid Deee Geeaaa

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
Which goalkeeper has more unnecessary vowels in their name: Lindegaard or Jaaskelainen?

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
On only one occasion this season have Chelsea had fewer shots on target (2) ... at home to Man City (1) at the weekend. #cfc

  •

James Tyler: Four minutes left at Old Trafford. A crusty, soporific final spell.

  •

    James Tyler: interesting choice.

  •

    [Comment from mrfox]
being an Arsenal fan is the most depressing thing since 'the notebook'

  •

James Tyler: Granted they won the first leg 3-0 so moot result at preent.

  •

James Tyler: Beating Alaves 2-1 with 30 to play. David Villa just scored.

  •

    [Comment from davittski]
Any update on Barcelona? Obviously, I could look myself, but that's why they pay you the big bucks JT

  •

James Tyler: Leeds United's. I kid. I have my gripes with FSG at Anfield, but at least they fire a manager when it's justified.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
JT would you rather have Liverpool's or Chelsea's ownership?

  •

James Tyler: Was a good save. Apologies if I didn't give it the praise it deserved.

  •

    [Comment from Pat]
You really downplayed that Lindegaard save. Real class.

  •

James Tyler: Yet, John, if you remember the George Graham days, it's a full circle back around to robust point-collecting without any flair whatsoever.

  •

    [Comment from John]
Watching Arsenal this season has been like watching paint dry. Gone are the days of "attractive football."

  •

James Tyler: Atletico would be rightly ridiculed to accept that.

  •

    [Comment from kydetwsoc]
could there be a torres-falcao swap, maybe take 10 mill off asking price

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MAN UNITED: Anderson off -- decent shift -- and Phil Jones on. 7 minutes remaining.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Lindegaard fumbled a mid-range shot, Modibo Maiga can't turn the rebound in but he's flagged for offside regardless.

  •

James Tyler: FT: Stoke 2, Newcastle United 1

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
@OptaJoe I only make it 579 minutes to now since he scored against Norwich on October 6?

  •

    [Comment from Matt]
Tough situation for Liverpool ref. Long ball to Suarez, he's 30 yards from the play...impossible to see if a little contact was made. Need goal line refs...

  •

PCarrESPN: United and City each have 20.

  •

James Tyler: I didn't see it live, so I can't comment.

  •

    [Comment from Jamon]
Who has the most penalties over the past 3 seasons? Has to be united right?

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Unbiased opinion...was that a penalty on Suarez?

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea is definitely interested. Atletico doesn't need to sell but if the offer is right...

  •

    [Comment from Ben from NC]
JT, any truth in the Falcao to Chelsea rumors? Seems strange for Athletico Madrid to sell him when the could possibly contend for a title or Champions League spot.

  •

James Tyler: FT: Tottenham 2, Liverpool 1 -- Curs'd Reds. Bale just brilliant at both ends.

  •

    [Comment from BIL]
Chelsea players know they'll have a new boss next month, no need to impress anyone...

  •

James Tyler: FT: Everton 1, Arsenal 1. I said 2-2. I was slightly off but right in spirit.

  •

James Tyler: He really didn't do much. Didn't have much time. Good optimism though, Mike! Clean sheets are welcome.

  •

    [Comment from Mike]
clean sheets! also how did marin look?

  •

James Tyler: FT: Southampton 1, Norwich 1 -- Point gifted by a Saints' goalie howler.

  •

PCarrESPN: But over the last three seasons, Liverpool has 13 penalties, t-4th most in the league.

  •

James Tyler: FT: Swansea 3, West Brom 1. Boing-boing-Baggies have their springs broken.

  •

James Tyler: 10 minutes left at Old Trafford. It's hardly been a vintage United effort, but so far, it's been just enough.

  •

PCarrESPN: Correct...Liverpool is one of six PL clubs yet to be awarded a penalty this season.

  •

    [Comment from Andy]
So much for the Chelsea players wanting to impress the new boss...

  •

James Tyler: Huge point for the Cottagers. Rafa's necktie tightens a touch.

  •

    James Tyler: Brilliant, innit?

  •

    [Comment from Xavier]
You need 3 point so you take off Cazorla for Coquelin. What?

  •

James Tyler: I'd need Paul Carr to verify your stat, Mr. LFC-USA.

  •

    [Comment from LFC-USA]
0 penalties have been awarded to LFC this season.... And about 4 have been legitimate penalties

  •

    [Comment from Craig]
Arsenal with another tie. The real action comes in the post-game with Wenger.

  •

James Tyler: FT: Chelsea 0, Fulham 0. The axe is getting sharpened. Or not.

  •

James Tyler: One last heave for Chelsea. Wellied wide by Azpilicueta.

  •

PCarrESPN: That's four straight league draws between Chelsea and Fulham.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MAN UNITED: Rooney off, Welbeck on.

  •

James Tyler: Oh dear. LFC fans, we have more to be sad about.

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
Rafael Benitez has presided over three consecutive 0-0 draws in the Premier League and his team have not scored a goal for 360 minutes. #cfc

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
I cry BIAS on all these Liverpool fans in the chat.

  •

    [Comment from Alex Smith]
    Suarez fell...no help

  •

    [Comment from KevNJ]
Replay looks a penalty to me

  •

James Tyler: Chicharito can't beat Jaaskelainen from inside the box. Good run but Winston Reid did enough to put him off.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
    Gallas definitely made contact.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
Does anyone have worse PK luck than Liverpool? Gallas's foul should be a penalty.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Two all beef Mata, special Oscar, Luiz cheese

  •

James Tyler: Welp. Suarez down in the penalty area but no PK given. Didn't see it.

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea is a Big Mac without the special sauce. The lettuce, sesame seed bun, beef patties etc are all there.

  •

    [Comment from ap]
    what a strike from milner!

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Wigan 0, Man City 2 -- Milner, 73"

  •

James Tyler: Pardew's eight-year contract just got a little more albatross-y.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Stoke 2, Newcastle 1 -- Cameron Jerome, 85"

  •

James Tyler: Only goalless game is at Stamford Bridge.

  •

    [Comment from Juan]
hey guys been in a meeting all afternoon, any chance I can get a score update?

  •

James Tyler: Fulham holding firm at the Bridge. Mata's cross blocked out by Senderos. You could cut the tension with something very sharp.

  •

PCarrESPN: In the 38-game season, the record is 17, done three times...most recently by Aston Villa last season.

  •

    [Comment from Dave]
@PCarr, what's the PL record for most ties in a season for a team?

  •

James Tyler: Entering the gloaming period... 87th minute in most of the early kick-offs.

  •

    James Tyler: (clutches prayer beads)

  •

    [Comment from Sweet Carroll Nine]
    Liverpool really pressing now.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for United! Ferocious long-range strike by Anderson that's well-parried by Jaaskelainen.

  •

James Tyler: Walters is a real bright spot for the Potters. Max hustle every time.

  •

    [Comment from PCarrESPN via Twitter]
Gareth Bale now leads the Premier League with three yellows for diving in the last three seasons.

  •

    [Comment from John Henry]
Jonathan Walters seems to be seamlessly fitting into his new winger role for Stoke.

  •

James Tyler: Forget what I said about if results hold...

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Wigan 0, Man City 1 -- Balotelli, 69"

  •

James Tyler: I'm hot/cold on him, Vargo. Does feel like a Dzeko, change-the-game-late player. But he's also forced to scrap for chances alongside RvP and Rooney, so you can understand why he might be underperforming.

  •

PCarrESPN: Bale's yellow for diving is his 3rd in the last 3 seasons, most of any PL player.

  •

    [Comment from Vargo]
JT, any thoughts on Chicharito's performance? I think he does best as an impact sub than as a starter, his goal on 37 seconds against Chelsea notwithstanding.

  •

James Tyler: WHOOPS. Would be a 3-point gap. Apologies. But a big IF.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Stoke 1, Newcastle 1 -- Jon Walters, 82"

  •

James Tyler: 69th minute at Old Trafford and the DW Stadium. IF RESULTS HOLD, United would stretch its EPL lead over Man City by two points. I think.

  •

James Tyler: Ashley Young's first cross: right to Jaaskelainen.

  •

James Tyler: Looked like Eden Hazard was retracted, Guest.

  •

PCarrESPN: Yes...goal, assist, own goal for Bale. Quite the day.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
JT who is Marin coming on for?

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
PCarr does he also have an assist for the Lennon goal?

  •

James Tyler: Think there is some advance planning but also the desire to capitalize on the impending CL lull after Matchday 6 next week.

  •

James Tyler: It's the usual Xmas season fixture pile-up.

  •

    [Comment from Warren]
So what is the reason behind these midweek games? Trying to avoid snowouts next month?

  •

James Tyler: Marko Marin coming on for Chelsea...

  •

James Tyler: Hammers free kick cleared, United's counter but the right wing cross is hopeless.

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR MAN UNITED: Ashley Young on, Cleverley off.

  •

James Tyler: CFC 0, Fulham 0
    Everton 1, Arsenal 1
    So'ton 1, Norwich 1
    Stoke 0, Newcastle 1
    Swansea 3, WBA 1
    Spurs 2, LFC 1

  •

PCarrESPN: From Infostrada: Gareth Bale becomes the second Spurs player in Premier League era to score at both ends of the pitch. Other was Chris Armstrong vs Arsenal in 2000.

  •

James Tyler: About 10 minutes to go in all the 2.45pm games.

  •

James Tyler: Still 1-1. A frustrating mess.

  •

    [Comment from NY Gunner]
JT, can we get an update from Arsenal/Everton match?

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
What time is Peter Crouch going to the dentist tomorrow? 2.30

  •

PCarrESPN: Lots of databases and game notes.

  •

    [Comment from GoonerNYC]
Do you guys have a giant spreadsheet with all these random facts?

  •

James Tyler: El Nino onside, hooked his volley, seemed destined for the bottom corner.

  •

    [Comment from JamesDallESPN via Twitter]
RT @BenjaminEmil: @JamesDallESPN Or broken heart.

  •

James Tyler: Cleared by Aaron Hughes with Schwarzer beaten.

  •

James Tyler: Torres came close to a goal!

  •

    [Comment from JamesTylerESPN via Twitter]
Bale's own goal for #LFC is the seventh in EPL games between LFC and Spurs, most of any Prem matchup. (via @PCarrESPN)

  •

James Tyler: That's a fantastic stat. (Runs to Twitter)

  •

PCarrESPN: 7th PL own goal in the Liverpool-Tottenham series, most of any matchup

  •

    [Comment from JamesDallESPN via Twitter]
    @oilysailor yay

  •

James Tyler: Just under 30 minutes to go at Old Trafford. Also, at the DW Stadium... Wigan and Man City still tangled up in 0-0.

  •

    James Tyler: None of them.

  •

    [Comment from Himanshu]
Who will leave united in January? Welbeck, Chicha , Anderson or Nani?

  •

James Tyler: SUB FOR WEST HAM: Andy Carroll off, Carlton Cole on.

  •

James Tyler: Torres Watch: Falls over in the box, ball lands kindly for Mark Schwarzer.

  •

James Tyler: My bad. I'm typing at the speed of light. The gist of my point is still true though.

    [Comment from Gabi L.]
Hey JT, this is Silva's 3rd season, so can't refer to this as his sophomore season

  •

James Tyler: He's back. Played at the weekend, in fact. Was very good. Scored a goal.

  •

    [Comment from Rudy]
JT, Hear anything on when Fletcher will return for United? or is he done?

  •

James Tyler: Indeed. Lennon clears the corner into Bale's face. Hilarity. Love it. One more, plz.

  •

    [Comment from Salvatore]
Bale took that one smashing off his face. Perfect example of insult to injury

  •

    [Comment from LFC-USA]
    Greatest own goal ever....

  •

James Tyler: Cleared off the line for West Ham! Kevin Nolan scrambles it out as the Hammers fail to clear a corner!

  •

James Tyler: Chance for United! Wayne Rooney with space at the edge of the box, curls it around the defender but Jaaskelainen sees it all the way and turns it around the post.

  •

    [Comment from JamesDallESPN via Twitter]
    Upside-down heart celebration from Bale?

  •

James Tyler: Ping-pong ball in the box and it takes a final ping off Gaz Bale. Lovely. Should set up the remaining 15-20 mins nicely.

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Tottenham 2, Liverpool 1 -- an own goal, no less.

  •

James Tyler: This is a season for conserving funds. FSG spent $100m when Dalglish was still in charge. Need a year of balancing the books. They will invest in Rodgers' vision when the bean-counters say it's alright to do so.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
If that is the case, why is FSG not bringing in a more assertive forward to play off Suarez? Are they that tight with money?

  •

James Tyler: Major baptism of fire but the lad showed last season at Fiorentina that he can handle the pressure, ap. Been impressed with him of late. Was very tidy vs. Chelsea.

  •

PCarrESPN: I don't believe so. We track it internally, but haven't yet developed things to get it online.

  •

    [Comment from ap]
thoughts on Nastasic is the center of city defense?

  •

James Tyler: Cor, I remember that game. Great fun. Watched it at a bar in Florida. Don't ask.

  •

    [Comment from rz]
PCarrESPN, is there a website that charts chances created?

  •

James Tyler: RvP takes the set piece.... easy save for Jaaskelainen.

  •

    PCarrESPN: That's it.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
Gerrard for Liverpool against Everton last year.

  •

    PCarrESPN: It's not Rooney.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick for Utd on the edge of the West Ham box. Van Persie chopped by Joey O'Brien.

  •

PCarrESPN: With Wayne Routledge on two goals...who knows the last English player to net a Premier League hat trick?

  •

James Tyler: Great. He thrived at Ajax alongside a more assertive forward. Same with Uruguay and Forlan. Works best when running off a partner. At LFC, he's the focal point and therefore is never allowed to roam free. No-one around to help draw attention from him.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
James, how good would Suarez be with a legit foward next to him?

  •

James Tyler: Speculative shot for Utd from 30 yards. Off-target.

  •

James Tyler: You can find me on iVillage talking about babies. Not really. PS. Is iVillage still a thing?

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
JT, after these game ends, can we hang around and talking about our kids puking all over us for a while? I caught a bit of it on twitter this morning, there's plenty to discuss.

  •

James Tyler: Of course. It's a me-first, gimme-gimme era. I blame Twitter. We demand instant gratification. New players to score debut hat-tricks, etc etc etc

  •

    [Comment from Rob]
JT, is it just me, or do fans today want results within 24 hours. I see fans all over the internet bashing Rodgers and wanting him axed. I think it will take at least this full season for his system to be brought in and to get the right players in over the summer. Thoughts???

  •

James Tyler: Lovely save by Bunn to prevent Southampton regaining the lead vs. Norwich.

  •

James Tyler: Just a weird hunch. NOT trying to jinx or anything.

  •

James Tyler: I fancy a second United goal in the offing. Some time in the next 5-9 minutes.

  •

PCarrESPN: vs Newcastle last November, when Newcastle tied it 1-1 on that controversial PK....and at Stoke last September, also 1-1

  •

    [Comment from EFC Mike]
PCarr who are the 2 draws?

  •

James Tyler: Rooney's cross almost reaches Chicharito but James Collins with a forceful header clear.

  •

James Tyler: Nope, I noted it. Cisse on 47 mins.

  •

    [Comment from Benitez]
    You missed the newcastle goal

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea's looking a lot sharper in the second half. Still 0-0, mind.

  •

James Tyler: Still 1-1. You're not missing much.

  •

    [Comment from daftdonald]
    Arsenal Update, por favor?

  •

    [Comment from Jim, Jersey]
PCarr is either Sheldon Cooper or a computer.

  •

James Tyler: Tired. Very tired. Actually in the middle of writing about this very thing. Look for it tomorrow. Think a lot hinges on lineups but also David Silva's sophomore season struggles.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
jt, whats your take on city? they seem to have lost that creative spark in the middle

  •

James Tyler: Chance for United! Cleverley skids a fierce shot from 20 yards narrowly over the bar. United players appeal for a corner but don't get one. Vicious strike.

  •

James Tyler: No. My money's on MLS or China.

  •

    [Comment from Harry]
will lampard go to another PL team before he leaves JT?

  •

James Tyler: I don't think FFP will bite as much as many (particularly Arsenal fans) hope it will. Teams will be allowed to spend as much as they bring in, but more importantly, player purchase fees can be spread out over multiple seasons while player sales can be applied in a lump sum to the ledger. Ergo, there are many ways for accountants to muddle the books.

  •

    PCarrESPN: 37 wins, 2 draws.

  •

PCarrESPN: United is also undefeated in 39 straight PL games when scoring first.

  •

    [Comment from Christian]
JT, might Financial Fair Play all of a sudden make clubs like BvB buyers as opposed to sellers? Seems amazing they would lose Kagawa and Hummels after winning another Bundesliga title

  •

James Tyler: Not at all. From formation to style of play, very different indeed. Kenny's style was to stand, bemused, on the touchline and hope Gerrard could tee up Suarez every weekend.

  •

    [Comment from LFC(USA)]
Don't Brendan and Kenny have the same type of style, except with Kenny they have more positional freedom?

  •

James Tyler: Much more lively indeed, Owen. And West Ham has come out with a bit more oomph in the second half at Old Trafford.

  •

    PCarrESPN: 13 backward...3 square.

match opening up between chelsea and fulham. chelsea pressing, fulham playing decent defense

  •

James Tyler: Jonjo Shelvey about to enter for LFC...

  •

PCarrESPN: He attempted 69 passes...53 went forward.

  •

    [Comment from Jim, Jersey]
PCarr.....how many of those Carrick touches went backward, toward the United goal?

  •

James Tyler: I disagree. Knee-jerk reaction.

  •

    [Comment from Marc from WV]
    Fire Rafa. Fact.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Diame's run felt a bit Nedum Onuoha vs. Chelsea.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! Mohamed Diame goes all Pele in the attacking third, duping a couple of United defenders on his way into the box only his cross/shot is blocked out for a corner. Set piece is wasted.

  •

PCarrESPN: Reminder: Man United has NEVER lost a PL game at Old Trafford when leading at half-time. 196 wins, 12 draws.

  •

James Tyler: Sneijder's a fascinating case. He's being "benched" until the contract nonsense is resolved. I reckon he'd stay in Serie A if he does move on from Inter. I don't see him wishing to join United's messy midfield nor be a square peg in a round hole at a team like Chelsea. Not that either have formally bid, mind you.

  •

    [Comment from Marvin]
whats the news on sneijder? any idea where he might end up?

  •

    [Comment from Jeff Moulton]
Woo Hoo! Another shot on target! This team is an offensive powerhouse....

  •

  •

James Tyler: Two things that would cripple mortals. It's having a deleterious effect on Captain Fantastic, mind you.

  •

James Tyler: He's old and being forced to change his natural game for an entirely different system, Brendand.

  •

    [Comment from brendand]
speaking of decline...what's with stevie g this year?

  •

James Tyler: Interesting, Paul. When Michael Carrick touches the ball most, you're not doing well.

  •

James Tyler: As for purchases, the usual names get bandied about: Falcao, etc.

  •

PCarrESPN: Most touches of any player in any first half today: Michael Carrick with 71.

  •

James Tyler: Waiting for Pep is like Waiting for Godot.

  •

James Tyler: Save their season? Are they 20th right now?

  •

    [Comment from Kenneth]
Who can Chelsea go get in the January window to save their season? And when is Pep coming?

  •

James Tyler: Yes. Bench them all.

  •

    [Comment from LFC(USA)]
Should we bench Sterling for a couple matches, in fear of burnout?

  •

    PCarrESPN: Greetings!

  •

    James Tyler: Hello, Paul!

PS: Barcelona losing to Alaves in Copa del Rey (still 80% possession though)

  •

James Tyler: Chance for John Arne Riise to score at Stamford Bridge! Through on goal following a fine crossfield pass. Chests it down wonderfully but absolutely Torres-es his shot.

  •

    @Scorge86 Hardly.

  •

    James Tyler: It's mandatory.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
Oh lord, I'm going to have to watch the MLS Cup for boot room, aren't I? The outcome of the previous playoff rounds had left me in a fury. Sigh.

  •

James Tyler: I wouldn't enjoy it. But it'd be nice for United. Not entirely sure there's much truth in it.

  •

    [Comment from Marvin]
James what would you think about Matt Hummells going to Manchester United???

  •

James Tyler: Decline? Wouldn't go that far. Yeah they're not winning trophies but they're comfortably ensconced within touching distance of successful teams. I would say the board, though. They control the purse. Yet there's a weird disconnect with the board saying Wenger has money to spend and Wenger not spending it.

  •

    [Comment from Pete]
James, in your opinion, who is more to blame for Arsenal's decline? Wenger or the Board?

  •

James Tyler: Mars. He'll set up the colony.

  •

    [Comment from Wren]
How about expanding the league to 24 teams?

  •

James Tyler: I love an underdog, so HOUSTON. Rico Clark to devour David Beckham. Brad Davis to set piece the Dynamo to success. Also, Boniek is lovely.

  •

    [Comment from Josh]
Who are you going for in the MLS Final Saturday?

  •

    James Tyler: No.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
James, what do you think of reducing the PL down to 16 teams?

  •

    [Comment from Mojo]
JT, Any chacne of Mourinho coming back to CFC?

  •

James Tyler: Neither do I. But then... CALENDAR ABSENCE. He sold his house, too. But that's totally normal. People buy houses all the time.

  •

    [Comment from V]
Walcott isn't going anywhere... I really don't think any top tier team would buy his as a center forward.

  •

James Tyler: See? The Magpies are fine.

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Stoke 0, Newcastle 1 -- Papiss Demba Cisse, 47"

  •

James Tyler: They're really not, Jun. They are trying. Just not clicking. Chicharito offside a few times, RvP not getting open looks. West Ham operating the "panic but then lunge in perfectly at the last season" method of defending.

  •

    [Comment from Jun]
Any idea why MU seems to be taking it leisurely after the early goal?

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
    @Scorge86 Unlikely. I wasn't on Twitter then.

  •

James Tyler: Be right back. Chelsea-Fulham is underway again, but I need the loo so there you go.

  •

James Tyler: Well, there's regression and then there's OH MY GOD WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT GUY

  •

    [Comment from GoonerNYC]
Regression - Fernando Torres @ Chelsea; see also Stuart Downing @ Liverpool

  •

James Tyler: Like a gentle breeze. Not hearing anything to get excited about.

  •

James Tyler: HT: Man United 1, West Ham 0. The sleepiest half since that bit in Lord of the Rings where the Ents took a walk.

  •

James Tyler: I'm no journalist. But I do play one on TV. I think there's regression and also drama.

  •

    [Comment from Steve]
Whoa, a journalist-type using "regression to the mean" instead of constructing some narrative? Can you explain this concept to your colleagues at ESPN please?

  •

James Tyler: Evra's cross finds van Persie in the box but his header is gentle and easy for Jaaskelainen to collect.

  •

James Tyler: One minute of added sleep at Old Trafford.

Benitez has as much chance of surviving at Chelsea as Tom does in Mr Bates' job at Downton

  •

James Tyler: Carrick plays a nice ball through for Chicharito but he's offside. Shame.

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
@okgunner2002 15 shots, three on target.

  •

James Tyler: This might be considered "the shop window." Except it's the day after Black Friday and all that's left is a broken toaster.

  •

    [Comment from X]
Why are they playing Downing? I thought it was pretty much a done deal that he'd be offloaded ASAP.

  •

James Tyler: Utd fans shout for a penalty as Hernandez goes down in the box under duress from James Collins. Ref waves it off. Not a PK anyway.

  •

James Tyler: Well and there's something not as penetrative with Cabaye/Jonas this term. And Ben Arfa, too.

  •

    [Comment from C.J.]
JT, my opinion is simply that Cisse is a poacher. Newcastle's creativity has regressed, negating opportunities to poach. Ba hasn't fallen off near as much because he's not a poacher, just a target forward.

  •

James Tyler: 42nd minute at Old Trafford.

  •

James Tyler: Man Utd with 3 shots on target in 45 minutes. And one of those was after 33 seasons. West Ham yet to actually strike on goal.

  •

James Tyler: Gaz Bale good. Stewart Downing at LB bad. Reina unsighted on second goal, Henderson missed open goal, Gerrard denied penalty, Suarez shot cleared off line.

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
    @MonoKNE I believe he did.

  •

    [Comment from Stlkopite]
Ugh what is happening at White Hart Lane? JT can you provide some insight. Just signed on

  •

James Tyler: Hard to say. Neither he nor Ba has been clicking this term. Maybe it's a regression to the mean and last season's prolific goalscoring was overachievement.

  •

    [Comment from Jace]
JT whats your opinion of Cisse not being as productive this year for Newcastle so far?

  •

James Tyler: Kagawa wasn't brilliant this season by any means, but his creativity -- far more than Carrick/Scholes/Anderson combined -- would take the pressure of Rooney/RvP to create.

  •

    [Comment from Ben Marks]
how important is Kagawa's return for Man U in the champions league knock out stages? #FCBootroom

  •

James Tyler: Yes -- Luis Suarez. (Awaits inevitable shower of "U R BIASED" responses)

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
@MonoKNE Shorter. Liverpool lost to Chelsea.

  •

    [Comment from Tom]
Everton looking good-is there a more fearsome presence in the EPL than Fellaini?

  •

James Tyler: Be nice, Jace. Anderson's been good this season.

  •

    [Comment from Jace]
Anderson is "trying" to make the most of his start today by attacking with intent...key word "trying"

  •

James Tyler: Yes. They happen. Amazingly, you can't win 4-0 every week. Who knew?

  •

    [Comment from peter]
whats up with WBA today? are they just having an off day?

  •

James Tyler: That's the crux of it. Neither understands the other just yet. End result is a circus of fun.

  •

    [Comment from Michael]
Luiz + Cahill = two CBs with the mindset of forwards

  •

James Tyler: Matthew Taylor with a hilariously off-target shot for West Ham. To their credit, the Hammers have not simply rolled over and played dead for Sir Alex. Plenty of chances, albeit lacking in clinical finishing.

  •

    [Comment from depressed red]
thank goodness we are down 2-0 - hardest lead to hold

  •

James Tyler: A bright note for LFC....

  •

James Tyler: I did a Homeland one during the pregame. Wake up, lad.

  •

    [Comment from Christian]
Wow, an "It's Always Sunny..." reference followed shortly by a "Community" reference. Perhaps we can make "Girls", "Downton Abbey", and "Homeland" references before halftime. I know we can do it, Boot Room!

  •

James Tyler: HT: Stoke 0, Newcastle 0 - zzzzz

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
Rafael Benitez hasn't seen his team score a Premier League goal for 315 minutes, when Ryan Babel scored against Burnley for Liverpool. #cfc

  •

James Tyler: It's entirely normal to go through spells of mortality. That Roman can't abide by them is another matter entirely.

  •

James Tyler: That's, what... two games in 50-60 in a season depending on cup runs?

  •

    [Comment from RDM]
Drew to Liverpool (who are being pasted by Spurs), Lost to WBA (who are being pasted by Swansea)... tells you a bit how bad Chelsea have been off late. Sigh.

  •

James Tyler: HT: Everton 1, Arsenal 1

  •

James Tyler: HT: Swansea 3, WBA 1

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Swansea 3, West Brom 1 -- Romelu Lukaku, 45"

  •

James Tyler: Thanks to colleague Dale for the grim statistical truth of Chelsea under Benitez. THAT SAID, it's been a game and a half.

  •

James Tyler: Nice stat, albeit one I don't have time to fact-check.

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
Chelsea have had just nine shots on goal, and two on target, in 135 minutes of football under Rafael Benitez. #cfc

  •

    [Comment from Sanchini]
Andy Caroll and Fernando Torres - 85 Million Euros and only 17 goals between the two of them.

  •

James Tyler: They do get partnered on occasion, but the results are never too pretty.

  •

    [Comment from Steven C]
Why is Luiz never partnered by Cahill? Is there something wrong with that combination?

  •

James Tyler: HT: Tottenham 2, Liverpool 0. Despair.

  •

James Tyler: HT: Southampton 1, Norwich 1.

  •

James Tyler: HT: Chelsea 0, Fulham 0. Fans rapt at the dismal first half.

  •

    James Tyler: 4. Comfortably pallid.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
On a scale of 1-5, how gaunt is Berbatov looking today?

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Southampton 1, Norwich 1 -- Hang your head, Paulo Gazzaniga. Goalie howler gifts the Canaries an equalizer.

  •

James Tyler: United free kick from 30-odd yards. RvP opts to shoot. It's not the right decision.

  •

James Tyler: TWEET YOUR QUESTIONS: Use the hashtag #FCBootroom and Darke/Macca will answer a few at half-time of the Utd/West Ham game.

  •

James Tyler: I honestly don't hate Benitez. Was wonderful for most of his Anfield tenure. It's more in jest/mockery at Chelsea, which was an unbroken thing that didn't need to be fixed.

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
JT, why the hate for Rafa?

  •

    James Tyler: The Manchurian Striker?

  •

    [Comment from N17]
The only logical Torres explanations are: Body-Switch, or Liverpool spy (American owners sent him to spy on Russian)

  •

James Tyler: Chance for Man Utd! Chicharito gets it from Cleverley at the top of the box, controls and tries to curl it into the bottom corner but Jussi palms it past the post. Corner doesn't amount to much.

  •

James Tyler: Corner for Man Utd... easily cleared. RvP finds Rafael on the overlap for a follow-up cross. Cleared to Anderson who has a chance to shoot, only he lamps it straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen.

  •

James Tyler: Last five minutes have been better, but still an abject fumble in the attacking third.

  •

    [Comment from cfcdon]
    JT, How's CFC laboring?

  •

James Tyler: The longer you watch this sport, the more inevitable it become, CJ.

  •

    [Comment from C.J.]
"In their infinite wisdom". Cynical much?

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham: Free kick is lofted into the box from halfway, Carroll controls Evans' header and spins to take a shot. Miles over the bar.

  •

James Tyler: At OT, Michael Carrick escapes a yellow card for a Scholesian lunge.

  •

James Tyler: Reasonably well. Full value for the 1-1.

  •

    [Comment from Fellaini]
What's the latest on the other side of Liverpool? How's Everton doing?

  •

James Tyler: Pay the troll toll.

  •

    [Comment from TottBot]
I heard a rumor that Liverpool used to be a "Powerhouse" and a "Dynasty". Can anyone confirm these statements?

  •

James Tyler: Torres gets it in the box, he loses it. Ball then comes back to him, he loses it again. My gosh.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Swansea 3, West Brom 0 - -- Routledge, 39"

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
    It's a Rout-ledge .......

  •

James Tyler: He has little choice because he's a Chelsea player. The Blues will, in their infinite wisdom, likely loan him out again just to keep ensuring he get regular EPL minutes.

  •

    [Comment from Phil]
JT, Do you think Lukaku will not want to head back to Chelsea now that Rafa is in charge?

  •

James Tyler: Petr Cech just had to make his first save after 37 minutes. Tells you all you need to know about that CFC-Fulham tilt, really.

  •

James Tyler: Gerrard "felled" as Dembele applied pressure, then Suarez' shot was cleared off the line by Kyle Walker. Nice to see the Reds (in black) waking up.

  •

James Tyler: Two sides of the coin.

  •

    [Comment from Dave]
Ok, Gerrard just got as much of a push as "Diving Dempsey" got on Bale's free kick

  •

    [Comment from Bryce]
THAT MUST BE A PENALTY! Liverpool robbed!

  •

    James Tyler: Uh, oh, LFC.

  •

James Tyler: Hammers' corner is into the mixer and Lindegaard punches it clear... as far as Matty Taylor, who thumps it from distance through the crowd. Anders smothers it.

  •

James Tyler: Not if Andre Villas-Boas has anything to do with it.

  •

    [Comment from Pwyll]
Come on. We all know it will be Spurs in that 4th spot, not Liverpool or Arsenal.

  •

James Tyler: At OT, Evra gives away a corner after Carroll's route one flick-on was close to finding Nolan. Corner thumped in, Andy Carroll attacks it but Jonny Evans concedes another set piece instead.

  •

James Tyler: Ironic cheers at Stamford Bridge as the Blues fail to deliver a menacing set-piece.

  •

James Tyler: Oh, Torres. Trod on accidentally, if at all.

  •

    [Comment from Michael]
Torres "fouled" on edge of the box on left side, essentially a short corner

  •

James Tyler: Decent attack for West Ham again cued by Matt Jarvis, but Lindegaard does well to punch the cross clear. Diame can't get a shot on goal from the rebound.

  •

James Tyler: Yeah but they're red on the inside.

  •

    [Comment from Danny]
Jt. LFC are in black tonight!!

  •

James Tyler: The 1 will be ugly in the extreme, too. A bundled tap-in or something. Welcome to RafaBall.

  •

    [Comment from Paul]
On pace for 1-0 Chelsea. As planned.

  •

James Tyler: Rikki Lambert for the Saints, 33 mins gone.

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Southampton 1, Norwich 0

  •

James Tyler: That said, Liverpool looks like a red-clad Maginot Line against an "up for it" Gaz Bale. So I'm not one to judge.

  •

James Tyler: The Chelsea-Fulham game is... to be polite... not very good.

  •

    [Comment from Jeff Moulton]
What? A shot in the Chelsea-Fulham match? And on goal at that! God love Rafa, because damn few in blue do.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for United! Chicharito played through wonderfully in space down the right. Angles in toward goal but instead of crossing for van Persie, he blasts it over the bar from a narrow angle.

  •

James Tyler: Matt Jarvis, fast becoming the Hammers' most effective attacker who isn't named Kevin Nolan, has an acre of room on the left flank to cut on goal but can't beat the first defender.

  •

    [Comment from Jake Nazar]
Torres Watch: 1st attempt at goal of the game. Torres turns and shoots right at Schwarzer. Whole goal too shoot at.

  •

James Tyler: Lovely. We deal in absolutes in the Boot Room.

CFC Update: Chelsea continue their unimpressive playing style with an invisible no.9 up front. Lucky for them the Cottagers are not offering much of anything going forward.

  •

James Tyler: The Prem is a bit wishy-washy this season. The top 4 will be as it has in most recent seasons.

  •

James Tyler: Um, Arsenal? Do keep up.

James Tyler: It could be interpreted one of three ways: 1. BR is trying to show him off with the upcoming transfer window. 2. BR is looking to see what his players are capable of learning. 3. The squad's embarrassingly thin and anyone will do.

  •

  •

James Tyler: No clue but you're not the only one noticing that his "once a season" howlers are happening every few weeks now.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for West Ham! The free kick won by Jarvis is dinked to the near post and Nolan's glancing header is into the side netting. Clever idea, that. Almost worked.

James Tyler: Chance for Tottenham's third as Mousa Dembele strides through the middle and blasts over from 25 yards after nicking the ball from Joe Allen.

  •

James Tyler: YELLOW CARD, WEST HAM: Kevin Nolan has a reducer on Tom Cleverley. Silly slide right through the United midfielder. Gets booked. Simple call.

  •

James Tyler: United probing for a second goal. First six minutes are a mess for the Hammers.

  •

    [Comment from JamesDallESPN via Twitter]
I see Theo scored. Contract, wants to be a striker, etc.

  •

James Tyler: He's no Sven Goran....

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
via twitter, reports that Fulham fans are singing "Rafa Benitez, he works where he wants."

  •

James Tyler: Not fit for today.

  •

    [Comment from Chris C]
James, how come De Gea isn't starting anymore?

  •

James Tyler: It's something called "rotation" except it's not very good.

  •

    [Comment from JamesDallESPN via Twitter]
Just played football for an hour in THIS weather. I cannot feel my face.

  •

    [Comment from Dave]
Why do we play Henderson when we have Sahin on the bench? Jordan offers nothing moving forward and nothing at back today

  •

    James Tyler: #Rafaball

  •

    [Comment from cfcdon]
What is Torres doing? Goals everywhere and nothing happening at the bridge.

  •

James Tyler: Yes -- other teams are playing together. Like Barcelona.

  •

    [Comment from Henrique]
Barca: Pinto; Montoya, Puyol, Mascherano, Adriano; Song, Thiago, Jonathan Dos Santos; Sergi Roberto, Villa & Tello Alaves: Sergio Herrera; Óscar Rubio, Agustín, Luciano, Javi hernández, Manu García; Jaume, Miki, Jonan, Luismi ; Viguera

  •

James Tyler: A silly idea, but if it gives more money to clubs other than the big 10-15 that always make the Champions League, I guess it could work. The Europa League revenue can't possibly compete with the CL.

  •

    [Comment from Goona4Life]
JT. What are you thought on Platini's musings to scrap the Europa League and expand the Chaaaaaampions? Is that just a way to ensure Man $ity get one or two more games before being bounced out? haha

  •

James Tyler: No, Bale's goal did take a ding en route to goal. Reina didn't even see the ball.

  •

    [Comment from Wu]
I don't think it deflected. Reina just had stone feet.

  •

    [Comment from Stephen]
Arsenal clears Fellaini header right off the line.

  •

    James Tyler: Arsenal updates...

  •

    [Comment from Joe Buck]
    Torres watch: He still sucks

  •

James Tyler: Joey, your faux French is not as good as Shteve McClaren's pidgin Dutch. But it is entertaining.

  •

    [Comment from Joey Barton]
Comment about my speaking English with a French accent, or a shall taunt you a second time!

  •

James Tyler: Thanks, Interista. (Hits block button)

  •

    [Comment from Interista]
JT- How does it feel to have a favorite team that can't even make it in the Europa League if it weren't for the prestigous Carling Cup... How the mighty have fallen

  •

    James Tyler: IT'S ALL HAPPENING.

  •

James Tyler: Free kick takes a chunky deflection to double Spurs' advantage. Uh oh.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Tottenham 2, Liverpool 0 -- Bale, 16"

  •

James Tyler: Deflected goal, speculative shot, loops over the keeper. Well then.

  •

  •

James Tyler: Robin Van Persie after 33 seconds.

  •

James Tyler: GOAL FOR MAN UNITED

  •

James Tyler: I know... I know. You're all excited. Wigan-Man City underway also.

  •

James Tyler: We're underway at Old Trafford....

  •

  •

James Tyler: Yes -- send 'em in as United/West Ham is about to start.

  •

    [Comment from Diamond]
Can we get some more Torres watch updates?

  •

James Tyler: Lloris a mile off his line... Henderson shanks it wide. I despair.

  •

James Tyler: Chance for LFC but Jordan Henderson couldn't profit from Kyle Walker/Hugo Lloris mix-up.

  •

James Tyler: Isn't that how you beat a player? Or do you need to beat them more directly? Perhaps a rap battle? A cooking competition? Break dance?

  •

    [Comment from C.J.]
If by "beat", you mean "ran by".

  •

James Tyler: Second Swansea goal: Wayne Routledge. So much for the boing-boing-Baggies.

  •

    James Tyler: Wisdom's a right-back.

  •

    [Comment from KentuckyMudflap]
Why not Wisdom instead of Awful Stewart Downing?

  •

James Tyler: GOAL -- Swansea 2, West Brom 0

  •

James Tyler: And Sir Ian Darke/Macca would love to answer your questions at half-time. Tweet 'em to #FCBootroom and the best will get answered.

  •

James Tyler: By the way, we've got a ton of games on ESPN3, including LFC/Spurs.

  •

James Tyler: 0-0. Ramires with a shot a mile over the bar.

  •

    [Comment from C. Greed]
can we get a CFC update?

  •

James Tyler: Was a shoddy bit of possession for Liverpool. Bale then beat three players and crossed it for Lennon to convert.

  •

    [Comment from alexei]
Please describe the Lennon goal, if possible?

  •

    [Comment from dalejohnsonESPN via Twitter]
@conradburry I will get on to this later with Ruddy injured.

  •

James Tyler: Blame BR or blame the threadbare squad. It's thinner than Pete Doherty in rehab.

  •

    [Comment from zaphod]
I just got home.. What is BR thinking playing downing at left back against lennon?? Unbelievable. Downing is a decent lb against uefa teams, AT BEST.... /furious

  •

James Tyler: And I'm already drowning in goals.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Swansea 1, WBA 0 -- Michu, 10"

  •

James Tyler: Well it's his first proper gig so hard to say. But always praised as an excellent tactician as an assistant at every club.

  •

    [Comment from Danny]
JT. Your opinion, is Steve Clark that good of a manger or...?

  •

James Tyler: Giveaway allows Bale through, Lennon slots it in. Bang. And I cry.

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Spurs 1, LFC 0 -- Aaron Lennon, 7"

  •

    [Comment from Kyle]
Nice Freekick from Bale. Lots of pace, but sadly right at Reina

  •

    James Tyler: Spurs LFC update...

  •

    [Comment from Wren]
I'll put my money on Wigan to beat Man City. Not convinced that City can defend Wigan's free-flowing football.

  •

James Tyler: MCFC: Hart, (Taxi for) Maicon, Kompany, Nastasic, Zabaleta, Javi Garcia, Yaya Toure, David Silva, Barry, Aguero, Balotelli.

  •

James Tyler: WIGAN: Al Habsi, Stam, Boyce, Piscu, Figueroa, McCarthy, Jones, Gomez, Kone, Beausejour, Di Santo.

  •

James Tyler: More lineups. WIGAN v. MAN CITY.

  •

James Tyler: No droogs or milkybar, just footyball in eyeballs.

  •

James Tyler: Yes, and my eyeballs are prised open a la Clockwork Orange.

  •

    [Comment from LFCFan]
So JT are you basically sitting in a room with 8 televisions?

  •

James Tyler: I kid about a lot in the Boot Room, but never goals.

  •

    [Comment from cubicle man]
wow. that was fast. I thought you might have been joking with the Walcott goal

  •

James Tyler: LFC in a 4-3-3 today, by the way. Enrique playing LW, it seems.

  •

James Tyler: Love Torres Watch. Please, keep it coming.

  •

    [Comment from Chelsea FC]
    TORRES WATCH: Horrible give-away

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
My money is on Mourinho to be the next manager fired. Also, YES WALCOTTTTTTTTT!

  •

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
GOAL FOR ARSENAL...STUNNING FROM THEO WALCOTT

  •

James Tyler: Would be an awful fit. Like, Veron at Utd bad.

  •

    [Comment from Gary Lim]
Thoughts on potential Taarabt move to Utd?

  •

    James Tyler: No spoilers, Jim!

  •

    [Comment from Jim, Jersey]
Rafa = Brody. Longtime, but secret, Liverpool supporter Nasir has been planning this for a loooooonnnnnngggg time.

  •

James Tyler: So much for a sedate afternoon...

  •

    James Tyler: GOAL -- Everton 0, Arsenal 1 -- Theo Walcott 1"

  •

James Tyler: All the 2.45pm ET games are kicking off, including the one at WHL between Spurs and Liverpool.

  •

  •

    James Tyler: 2-2

  •

    [Comment from Billy]
    Arsenal Vs. Everton prediction?

  •

James Tyler: Martin O'Neill. Or Nigel Adkins. Latter, I bet though the big win vs. Newcastle came at just the right time. Sunderland, meanwhile, is a shoddy mess. But doubt they could find better right now.

  •

    [Comment from Jarrod]
JT which manager's head is on the chopping block next? The football gods demand blood sacrifice!

  •

James Tyler: Buy David Beckham to end the irritating paper talk about his next career move. I'd buy him and retire him.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
JT if you won the powerball tonight what would you do with the money?

  •

    James Tyler: No.

  •

    [Comment from Will]
Do you think Chelsea will be able to prise Luis Suarez away from LFC in Jan?

  •

James Tyler: Downing's playing LB, Enrique LM. Been used a couple of times in recent weeks to middling success. Enrique does look good pushed further up, mind you.

  •

    [Comment from PCarrESPN via Twitter]
Chelsea-Fulham about to kick on FSC. Chelsea has had a different manager in each of their last four PL meetings.

  •

    [Comment from Scouse, eh?]
Confused by the LFC lineup: Downing and Enrique both playing down the left?

  •

James Tyler: More like because he's Rafa. Rafa-ball is a beguiling spectacle, but it does get results.

  •

    [Comment from cfcdon]
    Rafa gone defensive because Berbatov?

  •

James Tyler: Yes, he's still a bit out of shape, but Anderson's a mover and a shaker. Makes things happen. Putting in a lot more effort these days.

  •

James Tyler: I'd actually argue that he's been one of United's best midfielders this season so far. Added dynamism compared to the bland, stodgy play of Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes etc.

  •

    [Comment from Jesse N]
Over/under on what minute Anderson gets booked? can't believe he is still in the squad.

  •

James Tyler: We use a ouija board to ask the spirits.

  •

    [Comment from john_iowa]
why was there no Boot Room chat yesterday and on a side note, how do you decide when to have a Boot Room chat?

  •

James Tyler: Other than he's not hunky enough? Not sure. If we start to believe rumors based on who's in or not in a calendar, we may be beyond hope.

  •

    [Comment from Marc from WV]
Any significance of Walcott not being in 2013 calendar?

  •

James Tyler: Tottenham: Lloris, Walker, Dawson, Gallas, Vertonghen, Sandro, Dembele, Lennon, Dempsey, Bale, Defoe.

Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Downing, Agger, Skrtel, Allen, Gerrard, Henderson, Enrique, Sterling, Suarez.

  •

    James Tyler: Done and done...

  •

    [Comment from Danny]
JT. LFC & Spurs XI please

  •

James Tyler: I think it's hilarious. His last two jobs have been spectacular flame-outs and hardly with the kind of pressure he'll get with the Selecao. Clearly, the CBF hopes that Big Phil can turn back the clock to his World Cup-winning mojo. I doubt it will happen.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
Speaking of Chelsea's managerial problems... any thoughts on the return of Big Phil to Brazil?

  •

James Tyler: Maybe. Sorry if that's the answer you weren't looking for.

  •

    [Comment from Mitchell]
Are you going to be the only one in here JT?

  •

James Tyler: United could increase its lead atop the Prem. West Ham is always entertaining for good or bad reasons. Sorry that the Boot Room can't provide what you were seeking.

  •

    [Comment from PCarrESPN via Twitter]
@JWilks26 I'm not certain, but I believe they're all live only.

  •

    [Comment from Travis]
Honestly isn't Arsenal v. Everton the most enticing matchup? Or Spurs v LFC? Why United v West Ham, is it cause its on ESPN?

  •

James Tyler: Cagey 1-0 home win. A Benitez special.

  •

    [Comment from Charles]
outcome of the CFC - Fulham game?

  •

James Tyler: According to United's share prospectus, roughly 650 million people. And that's just Red Devils fans.

  •

    [Comment from LFCFan]
Who cares about Man U and West Ham?

  •

James Tyler: Perhaps. He's in transit to LA for MLS Cup. Big game, you know.

  •

    [Comment from Roy]
Will Rog abandon his beer long enough to say Hi to us today?

  •

James Tyler: Game doesn't start until 3pm. I could sit here silently but that would be counter-productive.

  •

    [Comment from Ak217]
I thought this was Man UTD and West Ham focused?

  •

    James Tyler: No.

  •

    [Comment from Kyle]
If chelsea lose today and Torres doesn't score will Rafa get the sack?

  •

James Tyler: No. Bale's not most overrated, though he is improperly praised as being the lord savior of left midfield.

  •

    [Comment from mark]
can any one else agree that Bale is one of the most overrated players in the world!!!? Just like Torres, pace is his only real asset and which will diminish quickly as we have seen in the past.

  •

    James Tyler: No.

  •

    [Comment from GoonerNYC]
Could Rafa be a Mole assigned to destroy the club from within?

  •

James Tyler: It won't happen, but a kid can dream.

  •

    [Comment from JT II]
Here's hoping Big Andy scores 3 for the Hammers and silences Fergie and his patronizing talk this last weekend.

  •

James Tyler: Truly anyone's guess, Jan, though that seems sensible to me.

  •

    [Comment from Jan in Cardiff]
So since Ramsey is playing in addition to Arteta, Wilshere, Cazorla, does that mean Walcott is on the left wing or playing up front with Giroud?

  •

James Tyler: Valencia is not on the bench.

  •

    [Comment from CR7]
JT any news on the United lineup? Is Valencia fit?

  •

James Tyler: No Giggs! No Scholes! A good thing, right?

  •

James Tyler: West Ham: Jaaskelainen, Demel, O'Brien, Reid, Collins, Tomkins, Diame, Nolan, Jarvis, Taylor, Carroll.

Man United: Lindegaard, Rafael, Evans, Smalling, Evra, Anderson, Carrick, Cleverley, Hernandez, Rooney, Van Persie.

  •

James Tyler: MAN UTD v. WEST HAM lineups...

  •

James Tyler: Rafa resting Juan Mata. Blasphemy in the minds of some. Me? I'm not so sure. Chelsea was burned by City time and again on the flanks on Sunday. Bertrand, a natural touchline-hugging player, might help there.

  •

James Tyler: Chelsea: Cech; Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Ashley Cole; Ramires, Romeu; Hazard, Oscar, Bertrand; Torres.

Fulham: Schwarzer; Riether, Senderos, Hughes, Riise; Duff, Sidwell, Diarra, Karagounis, Rodallega; Berbatov.

  •

James Tyler: CFC v. FULHAM teams...

  •

James Tyler: More XIs, then more questions. Just so you all know, I'm spotlighting the 3pm ET game between MAN UNITED and WEST HAM. Though I'll be following all the rest, fear not.

  •

James Tyler: Hilarious, but entirely unfair. He signed up to help the Blues in a touchy time, not wound them further. Fans should remember that over any piffling soundbite from a few years ago.

  •

    [Comment from C. Greed]
JT - Thoughts on Rafa's reception at the Bridge during the weekend?

  •

James Tyler: They found Luiz Adriano, Pog. Beware! The FA is like Carrie Matheson on uppers.

  •

    [Comment from Pog]
BOOT SO HARD... that the FA wants to fine me. But first, they have to find me!

  •

James Tyler: I certainly hope for it. I've prayed to my Brendan Rodgers shrine, I've poured holy water on my Being: Liverpool t-shirt and I'm expecting the best. That said, bet the house on a stolid draw.

  •

    [Comment from Guest]
Hi JT. Come on LFC will get a positive result at the Lane?

  •

James Tyler: Fun bit: Tomas Rosicky is alive and well and located on the Gunners' bench today.

  •

James Tyler: Everton: Howard, Hibbert, Baines, Gibson, Jagielka (c), Jelavic, Naismith, Distin, Osman, Pienaar, Fellaini.

Arsenal: Szczesny; Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Koscielny; Wilshere, Arteta, Ramsey, Cazorla, Walcott; Giroud.

  •

James Tyler: Arsenal v. Everton XIs, why not?

  •

James Tyler: This is how I feel also. Glad to know others share my delirium.

  •

    [Comment from Travis]
    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BOOT ROOM

  •

James Tyler: Oh good lord, Rafa-bashing? To the best of my knowledge, we don't have the rights to that sport on ESPN3. Sorry.

  •

    [Comment from Jared]
Let's start with some Rafa bashing... Bertrand in for Mata and starting Romeu RAFA!!!

  •

James Tyler: Southampton: Gazzaniga, Clyne, Fonte, Yoshida, Shaw, Puncheon, Schneiderlin, Cork, Lallana, Ramirez, Lambert.

  •

James Tyler: Norwich: Bunn; Garrido, Bassong, R Bennett, Whittaker; Pilkington, Johnson, Tettey, Snodgrass; Hoolahan; Holt.

Mr. Ruddy is out with a thigh tear for 3 months. Ouch.

  •

James Tyler: Let's start with the big game of the day: NORWICH v. SOUTHAMPTON.

  •

    James Tyler: Um, OK!

  •

    [Comment from TevezNation]
    STARTING LINEUPS PLEASE

  •

James Tyler: It's not Champions League but it will have to do. The Premier League. Greatest league in the world, or so it says here on this bit of paper.

  •

    James Tyler: Good afternoon, everyone!
