Pescara promoted to Serie A after beating Trapani in playoff final

Pescara were promoted to Serie A after defeating Trapani 3-1 on aggregate in the second-division playoff final on Thursday.

The Dolphins managed a 1-1 draw away to Trapani following a 2-0 win in the first leg to return to the top flight for the first time since being relegated in 2013.

Nicola Citro opened the scoring for Trapani after just five minutes, but Pescara equalised on the night in the 57th minute after Valerio Verre's brilliant 35-yard strike with goalkeeper Nicolas out of position.

Gennaro Scognamiglio was sent off for Trapani seven minutes later, putting the tie out of reach.

Pescara will join Cagliari and Crotone in Serie A next season, replacing the relegated Carpi, Frosinone and Hellas Verona.
