Smith misses PK in final seconds
CARY, N.C. -- Philadelphia's Kelly Smith missed a penalty
shot during injury time as the Charge and the Carolina Courage
played to a 1-1 tie Saturday in the WUSA finale for both teams.
Neither the Charge (5-11-5) nor the defending champion Courage
(7-10-4) are advancing to the playoffs.
Smith's penalty shot, which hit the left post, came after
Carolina's Danielle Borgman dragged down Stacey Tullock in the
penalty area.
Birgit Prinz gave Carolina the early lead when she took a pass
from Staci Burt, drove past the Charge's defense and got a shot
past goalkeeper Hope Solo. Pavlina Scasna tied the game at the
12:43 mark when she beat two Courage defenders and deflected a shot
off Carolina goalie Danielle Slaton.
The Charge missed another chance in the 76th minute when Smith's
shot sailed wide of the open net. Carolina's Marcia Wallis bounced
a ball off the crossbar in the 90th minute.
