BOSTON -- Briana Scurry made two saves and earned her
WUSA-leading seventh shutout of the season in the Atlanta Beat's
0-0 tie with the Boston Breakers on Saturday.
Atlanta had a number of scoring chances but Breakers goalie
Karina LeBlanc made seven saves to earn her second shutout this
Atlanta, the WUSA's top team, improved to 9-3-5. Second-place
Boston is 7-4-5. Atlanta has 32 points with four games remaining,
while Boston has 26 points with five games left.
The Breakers appeared to score in the sixth minute but the goal
was waved off because of a hand ball. Dagny Mellgren crossed the
ball to the middle to Maren Meinert, but it bounced off her left
wrist before she scored.
In the final minute of the first half, LeBlanc made a big
left-hand save on Homara Sawa. In the 72nd minute, LeBlanc stopped
Ifeoma Dieke and followed that up two minutes later with a big
right-hand save on a shot in the slot from Sawa.
''Our defending was pretty good. We were a little unlucky on the
attack,'' Breakers coach Pia Sundhage said. ''You have to look at
the game Karina LeBlanc had. She came out with some huge saves and
that's the best game I've seen her play.''
