Espanyol 2-4 Betis Sevilla: FT Report

BARCELONA, December 18 (Primera Liga) - Former Spanish national coach Javier Clemente has taken over the reins of struggling Espanyol.

Clemente has replaced Ramon Moya as trainer of the Catalan side, who have only managed ten points this season and are second bottom of the Primera Liga.

He will be the third man installed at the Olympic Stadium this term with Juande Ramos, the first incumbent, still seeking compensation after his dismissal by chairman Daniel Sanchez Llibre.

Moya, a youth coach under Ramos, took over control of the first team on October 20, and won his first two games in charge, beginning with Recreativo Huelva. But since then it has been downhill and his overall record reads three wins and six defeats.

Clemente was in charge of the Tenerife side who were relegated last season from La Liga but will be now hoping for better things after signing a deal which will keep him at the club until June 2003.

It is Clemente's third spell at Espanyol. His first, from 1986 to 1989, saw the team reach third place in the Spanish league and the UEFA Cup final. He returned in 1992 and on that occasion saved the team from the drop before going on to manage the national side.

Announcing his arrival in a press conference this evening Sanchez Llibre said the club need to start picking up points.

``We are in a difficult situation and we need a change,'' he explained.

``Last time he was here we were in the UEFA Cup final and finished third in the league, and then he saved us from the drop,'' he added while insisting that Clemente was put in an unfortunate positions at Tenerife.

``He arrived at Tenerife in a difficult situation, he only had five or six games before the end of the season and they only went down on goal difference,'' he said.

Ousted boss Moya claimed he did all he could to help the club and was looking forward to staying on.

``I have my conscience clear, I think I have done a good job here and that we are turning the corner,'' he said. ``The two months have served as good experience for me and I hope to continue learning under a man like Clemente.''

Clemente's first task will be to take over tomorrow`s training in preparation for the clash with Valladolid on Sunday.
