Hartlepool returned to the top of the Third Division by ending a three-game winless run with a 3-0 home victory over Cambridge.
It was the first time this season the visitors had failed to score in a league game, but they went close often enough to make the game more of a contest than the scoreline suggests.
The visitors dominated the first half, Omer Riza and Shane Tudor seeing home keeper Anthony Williams pull off superb fingertip saves to keep them out.
But they were punished for failing to make their dominance count when top-scorer Eifion Williams slid home his 12th of the season in added time after Tommy Widdrington's free-kick squeezed through the Cambridge defensive wall.
The second half was just as frantic as Cambridge battled for an equaliser, but the goal appeared to have settled Hartlepool and they looked a better side than before the break.
They sealed victory with two goals in the last 10 minutes through Mark Tinkler and Darrell Clarke.
Tinkler headed home Kevin Henderson's cross on 82 minutes amd three minutes later Clarke grabbed his first of the season from the spot after Tommy Widdrington had been fouled by Stev Angus.
