Relegation-haunted Macclesfield slumped to their sixth home league defeat as they were beaten 1-0 by Lincoln.
The killer goal came in the 83rd minute after midfielder George Abbey had given the ball away in attack.
Substitute Chris Cornelly found Peter Gain for the Imps and he smashed a left-footed shot into the top corner from 30 yards.
The home side had squandered a host of chances in the first half, the best falling to former Everton youngster David Eaton after 32 minutes, but from only eight yards he scuffed a half-volley horribly wide.
Five minutes later Silkmen striker Matthew Tipton saw a goalbound attempt deflected wide by Lincoln skipper Paul Morgan.
Lincoln dominated the second half, with big centre-back Ben Futcher heading inches over the crossbar in the 47th minute and Richard Butcher forcing a stunning save from Steve Wilson with a fierce 15-yard drive with 10 minutes remaining.
The goal had to come, and Gain delivered the goods with his stunning long-range strike.
