Crewe moved into second place in Division Two with their seventh away win of the season, a fine 2-1 victory at Colchester.
They owed their success to Steve Jones, who scored twice, and goalkeeper Clayton Ince who made a fine penalty save.
Colchester took the lead after 41 minutes when Mick Stockwell finished off a fine move started by Joe Keith.
But Jones turned the match on its head with two goals in six minutes.
He levelled with a crisp left-foot shot after 56 minutes and bagged the winner when he profited from a bad error by Colchester's Pat Baldwin.
The hosts had a glorious chance to level when awarded a penalty five minutes later but Ince brilliantly parried Keith's spot-kick.
