Maccabi Tel-Aviv through to last 32

PA Sport
Maccabi Tel-Aviv celebrate Eran Zahavi's winner against Bordeaux.

Maccabi Tel-Aviv progressed to the knockout stages in European competition for the first time as Eran Zahavi's late penalty secured all the points against already-eliminated Bordeaux.

The hosts came into the contest knowing that a point would be enough to seal their place in the last 32 of the Europa League alongside Group F winners Eintracht Frankfurt and duly did what was required of them in a workmanlike 1-0 win.

Bordeaux will be glad to see the back of the Europa League after a miserable campaign that gleaned just three points, and they bowed out with just 10 men tonight after Matthieu Chalme was sent off for the incident that led to the match-winning penalty.

Bordeaux came into the match with only pride to play for but that seemed insufficient to motivate the players as they laboured in the first half, with Fahid Ben Khalfallah's long-range shot that forced Juan Pablo to parry their only chance of note.

Barak Itzhaki headed over for the hosts as they, too, struggled to get going in a contest played in heavy rain.

Maccabi appeared the side most likely to break the deadlock in the second half but they needed a little help to get their goal, with Chalme conceding a penalty for catching Munas Dabbur in the face with his boot - an offence that earned the Bordeaux man a second yellow card into the bargain.

Zahavi kept his cool to convert from the spot and the Israelis were able to comfortably see out their advantage until the whistle against a deflated Bordeaux side very much going through the motions.
