Apoel hopes end in Frankfurt

PA Sport

Apoel Nicosia's Europa League hopes were extinguished after they went down to a 2-0 defeat in a must-win game against Eintracht Frankfurt.

While Frankfurt had already qualified for the knockout stages, Apoel's slim hopes relied on them winning in Germany while also hoping for Maccabi Tel-Aviv to lose to Bordeaux with a swing in goal difference.

However, Stephan Schrock headed home the Bundesliga side's opener in the 66th minute before Constant Djakpa sealed victory 13 minutes from time with a 25-yard free-kick and with Maccabi winning, Apoel were ultimately six points off qualification in third in Group F.

It was the hosts who showed as an attacking force. Djakpa had a 25-yard shot blocked while Jan Rosenthal fired over the bar.

The Cypriots finally had an effort, Nektarios Alexandrou shooting high before Frankfurt had the best chance in the 22nd minute when Marco Russ's close-range shot was blocked by Alexandrou.

The visitors were then indebted to goalkeeper Dionissis Chiotis who parried Takashi Inui's right-footed shot.

The hosts went close again on the stroke of half-time when Inui's shot from the centre of the area was tipped round the post by Chiotis.

Djakpa shot wide and Srdjan Lakic had a header comfortably held by Chiotis before unsurprisingly Frankfurt took the lead midway through the half.

Djakpa's cross from the left found Schrock in the six-yard box and he headed the ball down into the bottom right of the goal.

Apoel then had their best effort of the match with Pietros Sotiriou forcing Felix Wiedwald to parry his shot from the right of the area.

Apoel's Europa League was then all over 13 minutes from time when Artymatas fouled Schrock and from the resulting free-kick Djakpa sent the ball into the top right-hand corner of the goal from 25 yards.
