Stenhousemuir pulled off the upset of the day in the Scottish Challenge Cup, as Sean Lynch scored the decisive spot-kick to knock out Dundee with a 5-4 win on penalties.
Dundee looked the more threatening in the first half and made the pressure pay shortly after the break - Peter MacDonald converting from the spot after Jim McAlister had been felled by Craig Anderson in the penalty area.
The lead did not last long for the Dees, as Higgins pulled Stenny level with a right-footed effort from the centre of the penalty area 11 minutes later.
The sides were still level at the end of 90 minutes, and the tie went to penalties after an extra half an hour's play could not separate them.
Willie Dyer missed Dundee's seventh penalty of the shootout, presenting Lynch with the opportunity to make himself a hero, and the midfielder made no mistake as he sent the League One club into the semi-finals.
