Unhappy coaches in Mariners-Roar game

Central Coast coach Graham Arnold and Brisbane Roar counterpart Mike Mulvey both had issue with fourth official Tim McGilchrist in the Mariners' 1-0 A-League win in Gosford on Sunday.

Bernie Ibini struck the winner in the 34th minute, while goalkeeper Mat Ryan was the figurehead of some desperate defending in the second half as the hosts held on despite a glut of chances for the Roar.

Mariners coach Graham Arnold, officially warned about his behaviour in the opening half by referee Alan Milliner, was again incredulous in the dying stages when Milliner failed to end the match after the allotted four minutes of injury time.

The fact McGilchrist held up a sign for four minutes had already surprised Arnold, whose charges snapped a two-game losing streak and sealed a top-two finish with two rounds remaining.

"I didn't understand six minutes of extra time. That was pretty hard to understand," Arnold said, after praising his side's fight following a short turnaround from Wednesday night's Asian Champions League clash in Japan.

"I don't know where the four minutes came from. The physios didn't go onto the field at any stage.

"... I give up talking to them.

"I (had earlier) got warned for kicking an empty plastic bottle off the field, and Mike Mulvey walks 15 metres out of his box - and walks all the way down - and he says nothing to him.

"That's unbelievable."

Mulvey, shocked that a yellow card was handed out to Jack Hingert but none of the Mariners during a physical first half, had been trying to voice his opinion to McGilchrist.

"I was just trying to have a word with the fourth official because he spent 20 minutes standing next to Graham Arnold. I just went over and said 'can I have a word please'," Mulvey said when asked about walking down to Arnold's area.

"We made one tackle in the first half which I think deserved a yellow card and he got it straight away. There had been 10 or 11 fouls before that, that had gone unchecked."

"He said he didn't want to talk to me. I said 'well, communication is out the window'.

"He finally came over and asked me what I was on about."

Mulvey said he had a chat with Arnold after the match and that there was no ill feeling.

On-song Roar goalkeeper Michael Theo had kept the visitors in the game during a one-sided first half.

"I thought it could have been three or four at halftime. Theo has made some good saves and we totally dominated that first half," Arnold said.

In the second stanza, Ryan did well to keep out Stefan Nijland, who had only the 'keeper to beat. Nijland also hit the woodwork with a free-kick.
