Lyon edge third-tier minnows to lift Cup

Lyon battled past brave part-timers Quevilly to lift the Coupe de France at a packed Stade de France thanks to Lisandro Lopez's first-half goal.

The Argentina international, who had already hit the post, volleyed home after good work by his young strike partner Alex Lacazette as the Ligue 1 giants dominated the first half.

Lacazette hit the crossbar early in the second period but Quevilly could have taken the clash to extra time as they also struck the woodwork.

The Championnat National outfit, semi-finalists two years ago, had already upset Rennes and Marseille on their fairytale run to the final this time around and Lyon midfielder Kim Kallstrom acknowledged his side's status as the nation's pantomime villains in the build-up to today's game.

They were in no mood to be charitable, though, and Lisandro latched on to Aly Cissokho's long pass in the 11th minute to hammer the ball against the base of the upright.

Quevilly risked a foray forward two minutes later but Matthias Jouan's 30-yard shot cleared the crossbar.

Lyon lost defender Dejan Lovren to injury inside the first 20 minutes but were undeterred, Lacazette slaloming through the defence in trademark style before his goalbound shot was cleared off the line by defender Frederic Weis.

But a similar jinking run in the 27th minute saw the 20-year-old draw keeper Yassine El Kharroubi and cut the ball back to Lisandro, who lashed home ferociously past the two defenders on the goal-line.

Bafetimbi Gomis drove narrowly wide as the half ended with no further score.

Remi Garde's side picked up where they had left off as the second half began, Lacazette firing in an effort from the edge of the box which crashed back off the bar.

Kallstrom went close with a 25-yard free-kick but the 76,229-strong crowd held their breath in the 65th minute. Quevilly broke at speed and Anthony Laup outpaced Cris to open up a potential moment of glory - only for Lyon keeper Hugo Lloris to get a hand to his shot and divert the ball onto the crossbar.

Jimmy Briand should have put Lyon clear of danger with five minutes remaining, but after beating two defenders he was denied by El Kharroubi.

But there was to be no grandstand finish for the underdogs, as they emerged with only creditable defeat on the biggest stage.
