Samba stars christen Gabon stadium

A Brazil side shorn of its most recognisable stars secured a comfortable win over Gabon in a friendly match in Libreville.

The hosts were celebrating the opening of the new D'Angondje stadium, but the party did not start in the best way - the kick-off was delayed for 18 minutes due to a power failure and the pitch was in bad condition.

Brazil dominated possession from the outset, and after only two minutes Jonas was close to opening the scoring after finding space, but he shot just wide.

In the fifth minute, Hulk had his chance after a great assist by Adriano, before goalkeeper Didier Ovono saved it, but in the 11th minute the Gabon resistance ended.

The hosts failed to clear a corner kick, Bruno Cesar crossed, Ovono could not catch the ball and Sandro scored, although the home defenders protested he had his foot dangerously high off the ground.

Brazil's dominance increased after going in front as Hulk, Jonas and Hernanes were all close to scoring again, until in the 32nd minute Gabon had their first chance: a free-kick by Levy Madinda came back off the crossbar.

Only two minutes after that Jonas shot from long range; Ovono parried it but Hernanes showed up and doubled the advantage with a header.

Before half-time Gabon had their second chance, when goalkeeper Diego Alves saved a great shot by Pierre Aubameyang.

After the break things continued in the same way, Bruno Cesar created the first chance after four minutes with a long-range shot, and nine minutes after the break Hulk was pushed into the box when he was facing the goalkeeper, but the referee did not award the penalty kick.

With about half an hour to go Brazil coach Mano Menezes started the substitutions and the game lost intensity. He sent Alex Sandro, Kleber, Willian and Dudu onto the pitch.

Bruno Cesar had one other chance, but Ovono saved at the expense of a corner kick.

As Brazil relaxed, Gabon took the chance to create some danger. Aubameyang and Daniel Cousin looked for their goal, but they never were able to put in the South Americans' victory in jeopardy.
