Bart Schenkeveld scored twice to give Excelsior victory in their relegation showdown with VVV-Venlo and move them off the foot of the table.
Schenkeveld scored either side of half-time to put the hosts in control and Darren Maatsen made the points safe with a third.
Yanic Wildschut grabbed a consolation for VVV, who had Brian Linssen sent off when 1-0 down, but it could not prevent them falling to the foot of the table.
The win moved Excelsior up to third from bottom, four points from safety.
It was the visitors, though, who started the stronger and Wildschut twice fashioned shooting chances, forcing a save from goalkeeper Wesley de Ruiter with the second.
But Excelsior went ahead with their first attack in the 30th minute when Schenkeveld turned home Samuel Scheimann's free-kick.
Things got worse for VVV eight minutes later when Brian Linssen was shown a straight red card.
Goalkeeper Dennis Gentenaar prevented the visitors falling further behind the in 59th minute when he denied Tim Vincken, who was through on goal.
But he was beaten nine minutes later when Roland Alberg's corner from the left was met by Schenkeveld, who planted a header into the net.
Maatsen made it three in the 74th minute, finally scrambling the ball home from close range at the third attempt.
VVV at least did not let their heads drop and Wildschut volleyed home an excellent consolation into the top corner from the edge of the area, but it was too little too late.
