FC Twente kept up the pressure on Eredivisie leaders AZ Alkmaar this evening with a 2-0 home victory over Roda JC.
Neither side created any chances of note in the first half but the Enschede club moved up a gear after the interval and deservedly clinched the points thanks to goals from Douglas and substitute Wesley Verhoek.
The win moved Steve McClaren's side within a point of AZ, who visit Vitesse Arnhem tomorrow, and level on points with champions Ajax, who welcome Heracles Almelo to the Amsterdam ArenA tomorrow.
Twente had the only real sight of goal in the first period, but Glynor Plet's close-range shot was well kept out by Roda goalkeeper Pawel Kieszek in the 28th minute.
The hosts showed more attacking intent after the interval and Kieszek was again called upon in the opening minute of the second half, producing a decent save to prevent Willem Janssen's header from finding its target.
The deadlock was broken in the 55th minute, though, Douglas meeting Ola John's corner and directing his header into the bottom-right corner of Kieszek's net.
Mads Junker was not so accurate when he had a chance to equalise in the 71st minute, passing up Roda's best opportunity of getting on the scoresheet when he sent his header wide of the left post.
Verhoek, who had been introduced midway through the second half in place of Plet, made the result absolutely safe seven minutes from time when he fired into the bottom-right corner from John's pass.
