RKC Waalwijk boosted their hopes of clinching a Europa League play-off place this afternoon with a narrow Eredivisie victory over ADO Den Haag.
Krisztian Nemeth netted the game's only goal midway through the first half to lift RKC back level on points with eighth-placed NEC Nijmegen, who earlier beat bottom club De Graafschap 2-0.
The result left ADO, in 15th, only four points clear of third-bottom VVV-Venlo.
ADO had the first opportunity in the 21st minute when Jens Toornstra intercepted a pass from RKC goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet, but defender Guy Ramos cleared the danger.
Two minutes later the opening goal arrived at the other end, Nemeth heading into the far corner from Ard van Peppen's left-wing cross.
Nemeth stepped over Mitchell Schet's pass eight minutes before the break to let it run through for Robert Braber, but his shot was deflected over the bar by defender Gabor Horvath.
ADO goalkeeper Gino Coutinho was called upon to keep his side only one goal down soon after, Van Peppen doing well to get his shot away following Aaron Meijers' pass.
Not to be outdone, Zoet too pulled off a fine save from Toornstra's 25-yard free-kick on the stroke of half-time, pushing the ball away for a corner.
ADO thought they had equalised midway through the second half when Ebi Smolarek had the ball in the net from a free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
That was as close as the visitors came to nicking a point, with RKC looking the more likely to score in the closing stages.
Substitute Geoffrey Castillion found himself one-on-one with Coutinho but saw his curling effort kept out by the keeper's left hand, and then Evander Sno sent a free-kick over the bar after a foul on the edge of the box.
