AZ Alkmaar kept up their pursuit of Eredivisie leaders Ajax after Jozy Altidore's header gave them victory at the AFAS Stadion.
The American striker restored his side's lead after Quin Kruijsen had cancelled out Brett Holman's opener.
The result leaves AZ second in the table, ahead of Feyenoord on goal difference.
VVV went close in the early stages when Yanic Wildschut was denied by goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado and Barry Maguire struck the rebound against the outside of a post.
But the home side controlled the remainder of the first half and Holman forced a save from Dennis Gentenaar before Altidore also struck the woodwork.
Full-back Dirk Marcellis then reached the byline and cut the ball back to Maarten Martens, whose shot was saved by Gentenaar.
Altidore headed Roy Beerens' cross against the outside of the post as the half ended goalless.
AZ needed only two minutes of the second period to break the deadlock, though, Holman finding the net with a low right-footed strike after a corner was not properly cleared.
Kruijsen replaced Maguire in the 54th minute and took just five minutes to make an impact, slotting home from inside the six-yard box after good work by Danny Holla and Wildschut.
Holla was quickly into the action at the other end, clearing from close to his own goal-line after Rasmus Elm's short corner caused problems.
But AZ were not to be denied and when Martens crossed from the left in the 65th minute, Altidore improved on his earlier near misses to head home at the far post.
They were never threatened thereafter and indeed, Gentenaar made an excellent double save from substitute Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Adam Maher to prevent them extending their lead.
