Vitesse fight back to down lowly Excelsior

Excelsior remained bottom of the Eredivisie as they threw away a two-goal lead to lose at Vitesse Arnhem.

The visitors looked set to move above De Graafschap when an own goal from Jan-Arie van der Heijden and a Roland Alberg effort put them 2-0 in front.

But Alexander Buttner pulled one back from the penalty spot in first-half injury time and, after Excelsior had Jordy van Deelen sent off in the 75th minute, levelled with another penalty 10 minutes from time.

And worse was to come for the 10 men as Marco van Ginkel completed the Vitesse comeback two minutes into added time.

It was the second game running in which Excelsior had conceded a winner at the death following last weekend's defeat to FC Twente.

The loss kept the visitors two points behind the relegation play-off places with just two games to go.

Vitesse had the first sight of goal when Mike Havenaar's shot from inside the area was saved by the feet of goalkeeper Wesley de Ruiter.

The away side soon got into their stride, though, and Jason Oost's header brought a fine stop from Piet Velthuizen.

And they went in front in the 34th minute when Van Der Heijden headed Luigi Bruins' left-wing cross into his own net.

Wilfried Bony almost levelled for Vitesse two minutes later, but fired just wide, and instead Excelsior doubled their lead in the 42nd minute.

Bruins played in Alberg, who advanced on goal and shot low into the net.

But the strugglers were pegged back before half-time as Bart Schenkeveld fouled Nicky Hofs in the area and Buttner fired the resulting penalty high to the keeper's left.

Bony sent an overhead kick into the arms of De Ruiter and Schenkeveld shot over when unmarked as both teams wasted chances in the second half.

But Excelsior suffered another setback when Van Deelen was sent off after getting a second yellow card for diving.

And the 10 men could not hold out, Schenkeveld conceding another penalty with a foul on Van Ginkel which Buttner again converted.

Tim Vincken had a great chance to put Excelsior back in front when the ball found him unmarked in front of goal, but the substitute could not beat Velthuizen.

At the other end De Ruiter pushed a Bony header on to a post before Van Ginkel broke Excelsior hearts with the winner two minutes into injury time.

The teenager shot home left-footed to settle the game and edge Excelsior a step closer to the drop.
