Mutu brace not enough for Romania

Romania's slim hopes of qualifying for Euro 2012 were ended on Friday night as they were held to a draw at home to Belarus.

Adrian Mutu scored a brace, the second from the penalty spot, to twice put the hosts in front, but goals from Sergey Kornilenko and Stanislav Dragun earned Belarus a point from the Group D clash.

Romania had always faced an uphill task to overhaul either France or Bosnia and Herzegovina to claim a top-two place, but they started brightly in Bucharest.

Mutu put the hosts ahead in the 19th minute as he fired a low shot into the corner following Gabriel Torje's pass.

The Cesena striker had another effort saved comfortably by Yuri Zhevnov, who also kept out Ciprian Marica's header as Romania looked for a second.

But they were undone just before the break when Kornilenko's shot from inside the area found the net.

And Kornilenko almost put his side in front in first-half stoppage time only to head wide from Sergey Kisliak's inswinging corner.

Instead Mutu restored the hosts lead from the spot in the 51st minute.

Dmitry Verkhovtsov fouled the former Fiorentina forward in the area and Mutu himself stepped up to slam the penalty high into the net.

Siarhey Krivets almost brought the visitors level again but his shot was parried by Costel Pantilimon.

But Dragun did salvage a point for Belarus when he shot high into the net from the centre of the area following Filipp Rudik pass in the 82nd minute.
