Five-star Queens dump Dumbarton out
Queen of the South brushed aside Dumbarton to earn a 5-1 win over their Second Division opponents in the first round of the Co-operative Insurance Cup.
Dumbarton started brightly but were unable to test goalkeeper Lee Robinson and they paid the price when they fell behind after 17 minutes.
David Weatherston picked up possession on the right and crossed for fellow striker Derek Holmes to nod into the bottom corner.
Ten minutes later Holmes was on hand to double his side`s advantage, converting a spot-kick after Sons defender Ben Gordon handled.
Queens added a third after 56 minutes when the guile of Weatherston allowed Allan Johnston to find the net.
Derek Carcary pulled one back for Dumbarton but Rocco Quinn fired in Queens' fourth by finding the top corner with 12 minutes left before Gavin Reilly slotted in a fifth from close range.
