Mphela spares blushes

DURBAN, March 3 (Reuters) - World Cup hosts South Africa turned in yet another unconvincing pre-tournament display, having to come from behind to draw 1-1 with neighbours Namibia in a friendly on Wednesday.

Carlos Alberto Parreira's experimental team failed to deliver an expected victory at the end of celebrations marking 100 days to the start of the World Cup in front of a sell-out capacity crowd of 50,000 at the new Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Namibia proved party spoilers as they took an unexpected lead three minutes before half-time when winger Razundura Tjikuzu outsprinted fullback Bradley Carnell and delivered a square pass that the South African-based striker Rudolph Bester tapped in from close range.

South Africa made five changes before they could fashion an 69th minute equaliser in almost identical fashion with substitute full-back Bryce Moon providing the cross that Katlego Mphela converted.

Errant shooting cost the home side victory, notably in the closing stages as Namibia's mostly amateur side tired in the humid conditions.

South Africa, who did not call up any of their regular foreign-based players for the game, have won just two of their 10 internationals since the Confederations Cup last June, where they reached the semi-finals.
