Lyon 4-0 Debrecen: Lyon denied top spot

Lyon concluded their Champions League Group E campaign with a thumping home win over Debrecen but were denied top spot in the pool by Fiorentina, who triumphed 2-1 at Liverpool.

Michel Bastos, Bafetimbi Gomis, substitute Miralem Pjanic and Aly Cissokho were on target at the Stade Gerland as Claude Puel's side ensured the Hungarian team finished the group without a point to their credit.

The French team headed into this final pool match already assured of their place in the last 16 but battling for first position with the Viola, who were two points better off prior to kick-off. But the Italian team's victory on Merseyside meant Lyon's win was in vain.

The game started in cagey fashion with both teams restricted to long-range efforts.

Anthony Reveillere's ninth-minute blast flew wide left of Djordje Pantic's goal and then Mirsad Mijadinoski's attempt drifted over the bar for the visitors four minutes later.

Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was forced into the first save of the match in the 14th minute, tipping a 25-yard free-kick from Peter Czvitkovics around the post.

From the resulting corner, Czvitkovics' corner was met by Peter Szakaly but he could only direct his close-range header over the bar.

The Ligue 1 side then started to get a foothold in the game and began laying siege to Pantic's goal.

Michel had two 30-yard free-kicks in quick succession, the first of which was blocked by the Debrecen keeper and the second struck the wall.

Sidney Govou saw an effort from inside the box caught by Pantic, but the visiting stopper was powerless to prevent Lyon going ahead in the 25th minute.

He kept out the initial 20-yard attempt from Govou but Gomis followed up and made no mistake.

Les Gones suffered a blow just before the half-hour mark when Govou had to come off injured. He was replaced by Bosnian teenager Pjanic.

The best Debrecen could muster in their bid to get back on terms was a 20-yard shot from Adamo Coulibaly, which was comfortably saved by Lloris in the 42nd minute.

But the equaliser did not look likely to arrive and on the stroke of half-time Lyon went two up, Michel latching onto Pjanic's free-kick and slotting into the bottom-right corner.

Pantic had to be alert to prevent his side from going three down in the opening moments of the second half, parrying a neat Gomis effort to safety.

Gomis unleashed another attempt in the 53rd minute which flew over the bar, but the home fans did not have too much longer to wait for the third goal.

Pjanic met Michel's cross from the right and prodded into the bottom-left corner to put the game firmly beyond the Hungarian guests.

Debrecen almost pulled one back 10 minutes from time through Zoltan Kiss, Lloris tipping around the post, but the fourth goal of the match duly arrived at the other end 14 minutes from time. Jean-Alain Boumsong provided the pass for Cissokho, whose shot found the bottom-left corner.
