Feyenoord climbed back into fourth place in the Eredivisie with a comfortable win over Rotterdam rivals Sparta at De Kuip tonight.
Georginio Wijnaldum put Feyenoord on the right path in the 27th minute and second-half goals from Luigi Bruins and Jon-Dahl Tomasson made the points safe and took them above AZ Alkmaar into an automatic Europa League qualification berth.
The home side made a lightning start with Bruins flashing a right-footed shot wide from the left side and Milano Koenders then missed the target for Sparta in the fourth minute.
Koenders was the next to go close five minutes later, but after he turned and found room to shoot he could not keep his effort down.
It was to prove a costly miss as Wijnaldum put Feyenoord ahead, heading Sekou Cisse's cross past Sparta's Slovenia goalkeeper Aleksander Seliga.
Leroy Fer headed wide six minutes later for Feyenoord, who had to settle for being one goal to the good at the break.
Their second arrived within a minute of the restart as Cisse crossed from the left and Bruins applied the telling finish with his right foot from 15 yards.
Seliga made an excellent double save in the 64th minute, first denying Denny Landzaat and then blocking Cisse's left-footed follow-up.
The third goal arrived with 14 minutes to go as Landzaat's ball picked out Tomasson and the Danish striker was able to advance on goal and slot past Seliga.
Feyenoord goalkeeper Erwin Mulder made a great late save to deny Romano Denneboom and keep a clean sheet to round off a positive night for the home side.
