Sparta Rotterdam moved two points clear of the relegation play-off zone with a home draw against sixth-placed Heracles Almelo.
Heracles were offered the chance to open the scoring against the run of play on the stroke of half-time but Everton's penalty was easily saved by Aleksander Seliga.
The visitors did break the deadlock through Bas Dost two minutes after the interval, but Edouard Duplan made sure it finished honours even when he levelled five minutes later.
Sparta started well and mustered the first chance of note after 13 minutes. Duplan's surging run down the right resulted in a fierce shot which was parried by Martin Pieckenhagen, who then recovered well to also palm away the rebound for a corner.
Edwin van Bueren then crossed for Rydell Poepon, who headed over after 25 minutes as Sparta continued to probe for the opener.
Duplan and David Abdul had further chances in quick succession, the former firing over the bar and the latter seeing his right-footed blast well saved by Pieckenhagen.
For all their first-half pressure, Sparta could have gone in at the break a goal down after Ruud Knol's poorly-timed challenge on Darl Douglas prompted the referee to point to the spot. But Everton's weak attempt from 12 yards was comfortably kept out by Seliga.
The breakthrough arrived two minutes after the restart, when Dost diverted Douglas' seemingly harmless 20-yard shot past Seliga, giving the home goalkeeper no chance.
The visitors' lead lasted only five minutes, however. Sparta's equaliser arrived when Duplan latched onto Dele Adeleye's long pass, burst into the penalty area and lashed a low shot into the net.
The leveller boosted Sparta's spirits and they could soon have turned the game on its head with a second goal, but Nick Viergever's attempt from 13 yards was well blocked by a Heracles defender.
Seliga had to be alert three minutes from time to preserve his side's point by parrying a Birger Maertens shot away for a corner.
Pieckenhagen too had to be on his toes in the closing stages to punch away Joshua John's attempt but neither could side could force the winner.
