Mariners sink through Football League trapdoor

Shaun Harrad scored twice as Grimsby crashed out of the Football League for the first time in almost a century with a 3-0 defeat at Burton.

Despite dominating the possession, Grimsby's fate was effectively sealed in the first half of a game they knew they had to win to have any chance of survival.

Veteran goalkeeper Kevin Poole twice denied Town`s Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro with superb saves either side of a brilliantly struck opener by Greg Pearson in the 10th minute.

The recalled striker fastened onto a long clearance by Poole and smashed home a 20-yard shot into the top corner.

After surviving more waves of Grimsby pressure, Burton doubled their lead in the 37th minute when top scorer Harrad bundled home his 21st goal of the season from Pearson's deflected cross.

Poole continued to thwart the visitors with saves from Michael Coulson and Jamie Devitt in the opening minutes of the second half.

But Albion`s strikers could do no wrong and Harrad made it 3-0 with a superbly-struck 25-yard free kick in the 58th minute.

Grimsby never gave up the fight but it was all over for them long before Poole produced an incredible one-handed stop to keep out Lee Peacock's effort as Burton registered their first win in eight home games.
