Getafe left it late but ultimately got Victor Munoz's reign off to a winning start with a 2-1 victory at newly-promoted Sporting Gijon.
Munoz took over the Getafe reins from Michael Laudrup over the summer and had voiced his concern prior to kick-off at how his side would handle the optimism surrounding Manuel Preciado's top-flight new boys.
His worries appeared to have been ill-founded in the early stages as Juan Albin opened the scoring for the visitors just before the quarter-hour mark.
Diego Castro levelled matters 10 minutes before half-time, however, and it looked like the shares would be spoiled until Javi Casquero's 86th-minute strike proved decisive for Getafe.
Diego Castro set up the first real opportunity of the match in the fifth minute, finding the head of David Barral from a free-kick on the left by-line but the striker nodded wide.
Barral had another headed chance shortly afterwards, but this time directed his effort straight at Getafe goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri from Pedro Santa Cecilla's free-kick.
The visitors' first sight of goal came in the 12th minute when Joffre Guerron drilled in a right-footed shot from the right side of the penalty area which Sporting goalkeeper Sergio Sanchez did well to tip around the post for a corner.
Munoz's team were soon celebrating the breakthrough, however, when Albin stepped up to fire a left-footed free-kick into the bottom left corner from 20 yards after Javi Casquero had been fouled by Diego Castro.
Albin's corner then almost led to his team's second, with former Getafe keeper Sanchez doing well to block Jaime Gavilan's blast from a central position.
Getafe were made to pay for that miss in the 35th minute when Sporting levelled through Diego Castro, whose left-footed shot found the bottom right-hand corner of Abbondanzieri's net.
Manu del Moral had the chance to restore Getafe's advantage in first-half stoppage time but saw his header caught by Sanchez.
Del Moral was again denied at the start of the second period by Sanchez as Getafe battled to re-establish their advantage.
Sporting midfielder Michel Madera tried his luck from just outside the box in the 58th minute but was unable to test Abbondanzieri as he fired over.
Albin tried for his second in the 82nd minute but could only direct his effort wide of Sanchez's right-hand upright.
Albin then aimed to turn provider as he supplied Daniel Cata Diaz, but his header was well caught by Sporting stopper Sanchez as the hosts stood firm.
The Primera Liga newcomers looked to have done enough to secure a hard-earned point but Casquero had other ideas and, in the 86th minute, drilled a right-footed shot into the bottom left-hand corner to nick all three points for Getafe.
