Jefferson Farfan and Kevin Kuranyi scored the goals which saw Schalke claim a hard-earned Bundesliga victory at Arminia Bielefeld.
Farfan scored seconds before half-time to give the visitors the lead after an even first half before Kuranyi confirmed the win in the final moments of the game.
Schalke made the early running and offered the first threat.
Kuranyi laid the ball off to Levan Kobiashvili who unleashed a fierce volley from almost 30 yards which was well kept out by Bielefeld keeper Dennis Eilhof.
However, the hosts almost took the lead when from a quick break Artur Wichniarek went through to see his shot was well saved by the keeper from a tight angle before the same player was just wide midway through the half as Bielefeld settled down.
Kuranyi was then close when he gathered the ball but could not thread it into the net and was inches wide of the post.
Bielefeld had a great chance to open the scoring but Vlad Munteanu could not keep his shot down and blazed over the bar.
The game appeared to be heading towards half-time without a goal, but the hosts' defence seemed to go to sleep allowing Christian Pander to curl in his cross which found Farfan unmarked three yards from goal and the striker had the simple task of heading past keeper Rowen Fernandez to give the visitors the lead.
Kuranyi almost doubled the lead just after half-time when his header rattled the crossbar and he thought he had after just 52 minutes when his goal was harshly deemed to be offside.
Vicente Sanchez had the chance to confirm the victory with eight minutes left but struck the ball straight at the keeper who saved with his legs from just six yards.
However, Bielefeld had a great chance to level two minutes from time when Berat Sadik had a free header which he put over the bar with the keeper bearing down on him.
A minute later Kuranyi shot against the post with the ball bouncing out before the visitors had their second disallowed goal of the night when Jermaine Jones strayed offside to receive the ball which he slotted into the net.
However, with just seconds left Schalke broke, Jones crossed across the area and found Kuranyi who slotted the ball into the net.
