Karlsruhe and Energie Cottbus played out a goalless draw at which will have done neither side any favours, with both in very real danger at the wrong end of the table.
The result leaves rock-bottom Karlsruhe four points off 15th-placed Cottbus who remain just a point above the drop zone.
Knowing that defeat would put their Bundesliga futures further in doubt, both sides started nervously although Karlsruhe almost took the lead in the seventh minute when an Antonio Da Silva corner was cleared but only as far as Christian Eichner who fired his shot narrowly wide.
Cottbus came close to taking the lead in the 26th minute but Karlsruhe goalkeeper Markus Miller produced a great save to deny Stanislav Angelov.
The hosts should have gone in at half-time in front after Stefano Celozzi picked out an unmarked Joshua Kennedy in the area but he headed over the bar.
Giovanni Federico was guilty of an even worse miss for Karlsruhe shortly after the hour mark when he put the ball over the bar with an open goal gaping in front of him.
Cottbus were offering little threat in the way of attack and the only moment of danger for the hosts came when Miller failed to control a backpass and the ball trickled under his foot but fortunately for the keeper it rolled out for a corner and not into the empty goal.
Karlsruhe piled on the pressure in the dying minutes and had a late chance to snatch all three points when they were awarded a free-kick in a good position on the edge of the area but Dino Drpic hammered the ball into the wall.
