FC Volendam were dumped out of the Eredivisie by an equaliser 12 minutes from time which put De Graafschap into the relegation play-offs.
Two goals in four second-half minutes looked to have earned the visitors the points they needed to avoid finishing last and earning an automatic trip to the Jupiler League.
But Ben Sahar struck for De Graafschap in the 78th minute to send Volendam down.
The Doetinchem side head for the post-season relegation scrap along with Roda JC who had started the day bottom of the table but overtook Volendam thanks to a 3-2 win at Feyenoord.
De Graafschap started better than their opponents, Sahar sending a right-foot shot just wide in the sixth minute before the Israel international then blasted just past the left post.
But Volendam almost took the lead in the 41st minute. Mathieu Boots surged through the De Graafschap defence before slipping the ball off to Dominique van Dijk whose powerful shot from just outside the box clipped the crossbar.
The opener arrived in the 56th minute and Stephan Keller put De Graafschap in front when he headed in Resit Schuurman's free-kick from the left.
But Volendam equalised eight minutes later when Melvin Platje played in Gerson Sheotahul who lifted the ball over De Graafschap keeper Erik Heijblok.
And the visitors must have thought they had secured at least a temporary stay from relegation when they took the lead in the 68th minute, Jack Tuyp heading in Melvin Platje's cross.
But there was heartbreak at the end for Volendam when Sahar fired in an angled equaliser 10 minutes later.
