FC Groningen earned a place in the Europa League play-offs but needed a stoppage-time goal to beat relegation-threatened FC Volendam this afternoon.
The visitors needed a point to be sure of securing a chance of being in what was the UEFA Cup but they managed all three thanks to substitute Tim Matavz bundling home a winner in added time.
Struggling Volendam started well and almost took the lead in the second minute when Groningen keeper Luciano was alert to tip over a close-range effort from Jack Tuyp.
And in the 14th minute, Volendam defender Gerry Koning saw his shot deflected over.
Groningen missed a glorious chance to open the scoring three minutes into the second half.
Paul Matthijs' corner was headed on by Gonzalo Garcia but Andreas Granqvist contrived to shoot wide from inside the six-yard box.
However, Granqvist redeemed himself in the 58th minute when he cleared a shot from Dominique van Dijk off the line.
Volendam keeper Jeroen Verhoeven kept the scores level when he blocked Evgeniy Levchenko's close-range effort.
And the game looked to be headed for a draw until Matthijs' late, late free-kick fell to Matavz.
The Slovenian, on as an 89th-minute substitute, saw his first two efforts blocked but blasted in his third to earn the visitors all three points.
Volendam slip to second from bottom as a result of the defeat, one point above basement boys Roda JC with one weekend remaining of the regular season in Holland.
